Good age for children to begin cross stitching?

I like doing the canvas ones. My mom used to make blocks and other shapes out of them. Sometimes stringing them up to make a little baby mobile.
I also like the ones with the pattern stamped on them in blue, then the blue washes off. My mom does a ton of these, and every so often as a kid I'd take it over from her and work on it for a little while. Never did finish anything of my own.
For the counted cross stitch... I have a little mini one of a rocking horse. Yeah, started that sometime in middle school (96-98) and only got half way done.

DD10 was 6 when she started. We picked up a counted kit for her and she did great. I did start it but otherwise she was able to follow along with no problems.
