Has anyone shipped their golf clubs to Disney, as opposed to checking them through the airlines? I was wondering if this might be a more affordable option, and less frustrating since I don't have to carry an extra bag.

I have been looking into a golf trip for November and would love to hear any info on WDW and Golfing that insiders could provide.

Shipping costs for golf clubs can get a bit expensive. The last time I played at WDW, I don't remember the exact numbers but it worked out better if I rented. However, that was for 1 round. If you are going to be playing multiple rounds, then shipping the clubs would be far less aggravating than flying with them. Also consider that flying with them (even with a good golf travel bag) can expose them to harsh treatment--several years ago on our guys trip to Myrtle Beach we went straight from the airport to the golf course, and when I unloaded my clubs the head of the driver had been snapped clean off. I was able to make a claim through the airline, but it was not an easy process and took awhile for the reimbursement, which if I remember correctly was for a fraction of the value of the club that was broken.

I'm not sure if shipping them is more affordable, but now that they charge for second bags it's probably not much of a cost difference and again, you don't have to lug them through the airport (who can put a price on that?!).

I am not a golfer, but DH is, and I noticed Disney currently has free rentals for resort guests if you pay rack rate for a round. Don't know the quality of what they offer vs. what you own, but if you are staying on site, that may be a cheaper option.

Arthur,

What level golfer are you? I feel that Disney accomodates all levels of golfers, like they try to accomodate everyone, throughout their business.

My father is not a great golfer, more of a field hockey style golfer - 7 or 8 worm-burners will get him halfway to the hole... But we enjoy being able to spend time on the course together, so when we play at Disney, we choose the Oak Trail walking course. He likes to be able to get out and walk/play with the deer/turkeys/alligators and other wildlife that you tend to miss when you are on a cart. Plus we don't tie up the other golfers who invested a lot of money into their round.

For a fun and casual game with my buddies, we like to play Buena Vista, because it feels like you are playing in your back yard (because you are)when you stay at OKW or SSR.

The more serious golfers tend to like the Palm and Magnolia courses, which is where I have run into a few celebrities and at other times, tutorial production crews. I don't know how they compare to Myrtle Beach, but the PGA accepts the course.

No matter what, I like to be able to know that if I have my clubs, I can choose the level of play that I want (Wildlife walk on the Course, Casual game with buddies, or Serious game among other serious golfers - not going to lie, I have felt very intimidated on some occassions here). If I was a Pro Golfer, I wouldn't be typing this from cold NJ right now, so I really enjoy the Buena Vista the most.

I am by no means a professional either.

I play, for the most part, bogey golf. I live in Iowa and most every course around here is 9 hole with usually a 35 or 36 par. I shoot on average about a 43 or so. I have the occasional good days where I might shoot a 38-39, but not as often as I would like.

I have never golfed at WDW, but would love to golf a few more upscale and tougher courses then we have locally. I really don't get intimidate by golfing with others that are better. Golf is a game of enjoyment for me and I don't take it too serious.

I just updated my irons last weekend to the Taylor Made Burners 2.0, hopefully that will assist my score a stroke or two this year. I tried out the Rocketballz driver last weekend and taking a month or so to do some research and decide if I want to go with that.

The LBV course is a nice starting point. The course and pro shop are not generally crowded. Just check out the discounts and you will not be upset. Even if I can't get a round in, I at least like to make it to the driving range

I am just trying to figure out where I want to stay in November that works the best for golfing and touring?

If you are planning on going in early Nov. the Children's Miracle Network PGA tourney is going on at the Palm and Magnolia courses Nov 4 to 11, so that will only leave LBV and Osprey Ridge for getting tee times. You might be able to play the Palm on Sat or Sun the 10th and 11th (not sure) as they only use that course for the first two rounds. After the 11th you should be able to play all 4 courses.

It really doesn't matter much where you stay on Disney property, they will provide free transportation to and from whatever course you are playing, or if you have your own transportation you're not more than 10-15 minutes from any course.

They do offer free club rentals for resort guests paying non discounted green fees, and DVC members pay $30 for club rentals with the DVC golf badge.

My favorites in order of preference:
1.LBV- easiest, winds thru OKW and SSR resorts, not to much water.
2. Osprey Ridge- most scenic, lots of mounding with raised greens and tees not like most florida courses. Tree lined fairways, can't spray it around too much, water on 8 holes. They just eliminated the 18th hole so you play the old first hole from Eagle Pines and finish on Osprey 17th. They have updated the GPS for the revised hole order.
3. Palm- pretty flat, it's got a little bit of everything, not super difficult.
4. Magnolia- IMO the most difficult and less interesting, pretty flat, tough greens with lots of breaks, the one with the Mickey bunker.

The price of shipping clubs with say UPS is comparable to paying the airlines(shipping might be slightly more expensive). The only real difference I would say is dragging them through the airport. I believe you can rent(they might even be complimentary) either Titleist or Cobra clubs from Disney.

Didnt I read somewhere that a few years ago, I'm not sure exactly how long, Disney will start charging a fee to receive shipments to your resort. I guess too many people were shipping cases of water to their resort. I don't know how much the fee is if it exists at all but if it does you might want to factor that in to the overall cost vs. checking it on the flight.

Also, I thought this thread was to find out how much Fedex or UPS charges to ship your clubs. None of the posts actually says that as of yet.

Well shipping costs for UPS vary depending on weight and I did say shipping was slightly more than taking them on a plane. So if most people know it's about $30 for a checked bag that should give an idea of the cost.

Just saw the OL is storing golf clubs - don't really no much about it - DH didn't want to leave his 'extra' set there or pay for storage fee. Seems to me like the storage fee equals the other costs.

If you can fly Southwest you can bring clubs as a 2nd bag at no charge. Not a huge Southwest fan but this is a big advantage to flying them to Orlando. I would however get a hard golf travel bag to transport clubs if you do not have 1 already.

Not a real good golfer we played all 4 courses in Oct. Weather was great and our favorite was LBV and I think Osprey Ridge. Were there about 10 days before tournement and courses were in nice shape and believe me greens were faster then I had dreamed of LOL!!!

Take clubs and enjoy it was a nice vaction.

I'm not a golfer, but this seems to be a fan_written site with a lot of good info: wdwgolf.com

At Wilderness Lodge now. Son and I Played LBV today stopped because of heavy rain.
Jet Blue charged $40.00 per set of golf clubs one way. playing Magnolia tomorrow and Osprey Ridge Tuesday. Enjoy having my own set of clubs with me. Cant blame anything else but me for my bad shots.

Then you need to try harder. :rotfl2:
