Golf cart stolen

First time renting a cart. We took it to Meadows, was there for maybe 60 mins. Go to leave and our golf cart was gone. Had to call and get new one. Does this happen often? They said keys aren’t universal so I’m surprised how easy they can be stolen. Now apprehensive about leaving it at settlement while we eat dinner.

Happens all the time, there are about 10 different keys for all the carts so the chance of someone accidentally taking another is very high. I would suggest decorating your cart in some way, that will kelp greatly.

@Iexxus379, I am sorry that happened to you.

The same key situation is true for trailer manufacturers. If you have a common brand of trailer and lose your keys (trailer is locked), you can go looking for similar trailers of the same brand and ask if their keys will open your trailer.

I lost the key once that opened the trailer door for my cassette toilet tank (tank was full and needed to be emptied) but the camp office manager told me to check with other owners of my brand in the campground. And there was one who had the same key for his toilet tank as I did. And I got the door opened, tank emptied, and key returned and got a replacement key once I made it home.

For the front door/entry there may be more keys but for ancillary locks/doors like the toilet tank, outside shower, or storage compartments, there could be only a few keys they rotate around.

I am glad Disney gave you a replacement cart.

PS - I bet it was a mistake of a common key in your cart. Which meant there was a cart there in the cart parking lot left behind that would have fit your key.

Interesting. Thank you both. There was only about 5-6 carts in the lot the whole time and we parked in the first spot. I can see someone mistaken one for theirs in the middle or something but the first spot seems odd to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m sorry that happened to you, hopefully it was just an accident.

On another note, during my stay last week, I was surprised at the number of people who left the key in their golf cart when parked in a “public” area. They left personal belongings in their golf cart carts too. One guy even left the ignition in the on position and the lights on. I turned off the lights, switched the key to off and let a CM know. He just shrugged and said he had seen it too. I was getting in my cart when he came back to his cart, he just tried to press the “gas” pedal and when it didn’t move, he was very confused. I’m surprised there aren’t more thefts reported.

Never had one stolen, but I've heard of it. I have accidently got in the wrong cart before, but DW pointed it out. on the keys being common, I had a Ford F-150 for a work truck and my F-350 for personal, my Keys worked in both, they were the same year models, I called the dealer and he told me they only have about 50 different key combos and its rare to have 2 with the same, makes you wonder!
