Just got home this morning but last night we were in our cart on our way to the Meadows Trading Post to get some ice, we came over the bridge from the pool area and when we came around the corner there was Disney security (a lot of them) and an ambulance. They had closed off the entrance to Meadows from the road and were directing people to go around somewhere else and I think they closed off the path from the bridge right after we came over it.
We didn't see the accident but I asked a bystander what had happened and she said a golf cart came down from the bridge and around the corner and hit a little girl on a bike, she said the girl was pretty banged up and her bike was a mangled mess.

I don't know how badly she was injured and I hope she is okay, but I can't help but think Disney may need to make some changes with the golf carts and the paths they can take now (the bridge was reopened to cart traffic later).

I really hope this little girl is okay, what a horrible thing to happen.

Thats a difficult blind corner, if you arent VERY careful its easy to come up on people quickly. I heard several people, that were walking, commenting about how tight it is through there with the cart traffic.
Disney has the very best EMS service around with the Reedy creek emergency services so I ams ure they took good care of her.

Hopefully the weather on the rest of your trip was better than the evening we met

I am sad to hear that this happened. Accidents are bound to happen though, there is nothing much you can do about it. We have had accidents ourselves with the golf carts, it can happen with carts, bikes, cars, skates, you name it. Large amounts of people unfamiliar with the area are bound to have accidents.

And I agree with BigDisneyDaddy, that is a difficult blind corner. They should somehow put up a mirror or make a little round-a-bout to open up the view so accidents would be less likely to happen.

I'm not sure what other route they could make the carts take from the pool to the meadow trading post, without making people drive all the way around the campsite to get to the other side. :/ Although it would be a nice excuse to drive around the Fort...lol

Yes, the weather was much better, that hail was kind of crazy. :scared1:

I hope the girl is okay. Hopefully there was nothing more than a few scrapes.

However, this situation was literally an accident waiting to happen. :headache:

We don't know any who-did-what in the accident but it's a tight s-turn through there with a lot of traffic. I listed on this board the golf cart problem-childern I've encountered around the bridge area behind the Meadow TP. And kids on bikes whiz through there so the odds were good that something would happen.

Maybe traffic one side going around the Meadow TP can be one-way and coming back the other way can be diverted around the other side of the TP.

I agree too about the blind corner but people can try to make sure they slow down or even come to a stop before they proceed around it, pedestrians should be given the right of way on the sidewalks. I like the idea of a round-a-bout or a mirror though.

Believe me, with 4 boys I know accidents happen, 2 of my boys have been hit from behind by bike riders while we were walking on the sidewalk, once at POR and the other right in front of the bike barn. The one at the bike barn happened right in front of a CM and she said it happens all the time because the bike riders are too busy looking around and not paying attention to what is in front of them (and we were off to the side looking at the rental prices!). Luckily both times the boys only had scrapes and bruises with tire marks on their legs and the bike riders apologized.

that's terrible, i hope she is AOK. I agree about their EMS service having been one of their customers many years ago. There are a few places that are a bit dangerous with the carts and pedestrian traffic. I am sure the driver of the cart felt terrible too. :(

There actually is a mirror there now but who's looking at it. I saw the security there too and saw the bike but no injured person.

I don't want to start another bad cart thread but I'm either buying a cart to even the playing field or I'm going to just walk or ride the bus. When we were here a few weeks ago I was almost hit twice by the same kid on different days. I feel like every time my DD and I are on our bikes I am constantly worrying about being hit. I'm really sick of it but what to do you know. I just have to be really careful and watch the golf carts.

Why on mickeys green earth do the CART PEOPLE have to cross that bridge..:sad2:

Would it kill them to park on one side or the other and walk the 60 feet a cross????

Maybe we could get the cable pull from River Country for those cart folks to use to get across..:rotfl: ...

I would sit there with my refillable mug and watch that..:drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1

Lets hope the bike rider is ok which I am sure they are.

I think we should ban bikes and pedestrians. Then this would not happen. There are just way too many bikes in FW anyway. They are everywhere you look. You cannot get away from them. It has really gotten out of hand. I think I will stop camping at FW unless they get this bike and pedestrian thing under control.

I think we should start our own FW police. We can have volunteers for each. We will need volunteers for the Cart Police, a Pedestrian Cop and the dreadful Bicylce cop. We can each volunteer each time we camp at FW. Maybe we can keep this stuff under control and stop all these accidents that happen every second of every day at the Fort. I mean it has just gotten WAAAAY out of hand.

So, who wants to volunteer?

:rolleyes1 :confused3

I'm sure the golf cart driver didn't intentionally hit the girl on the bike. It has already been mentioned numerous times in this thread that it is a very strange corner that lends itself to accidents because of how hard it is to see the other side.

It was an accident, not a hit and run ;)

I was passing thru there last night on bikes and was thinking if they had a divider there or those fiberglass poles it might be safer. Just a thought. People come down the hill from the bridge on bikes and carts pretty quick. Maybe a divider would slow it down some.

Yea, a divider would be nice, in fact I think those fiberglass poles would be a great idea, that would really slow people down if they had to squeeze through there, awesome idea!!

I may be wrong, but wasn't that bridge closed to carts up until a few years ago? I seem to remember those poles FW loves so much as barracades on both ends, kind of like they have at the foot bridge across from the 1500 loop.

I do remember it being closed at times, but I'm not sure how long that goes back.

Personally, I always stop and crawl through that turn onmy cart as I know it is a dangerous curve. I also think the majority do the same but I do agree there could be a better solution for that area.

I am like Colson39 and most of the time I do take the long way around to the Trading Post just to take the longer drive. This is a solution that would not bother me at all.

Hey Colson,

Just noticed you live in Delray. I am a Native also and currently live in Lake Charleston in Lake Worth. Born at Good Sam and have live in the Boynton, Delray area all my life.
