Going to WDW on June 28th - have question about suitcase locks

Wow! I'm glad I read this post! We will opt for the zipties also. I like what the pp said about possible theifs not being able to find colored zipties...that really makes sense to me.

Am I understanding correctly if my ziptie is missing and there is NO letter explaining that my suitcase has been legally searched that I was probably the victim of a possible theft???

Thanks for this post!
Yes, that would be what I would think.

We have used zipties for a long time (way before all the extra seecurity). Even when you could use regular locks, they were there mostly to keep the zippers from unzipping. There were only a few different keys, so any baggage handling thieves could get into almost anyone's bag with little trouble.
Also, I saw a friend's little locks snap right off as her bag went into the X ray machine (in one of the airports where they were out in the open).

You can find the ziplocks in lots of stores; I got my last package at Target in the hardware department.

I know this is not a current thread - but just wanted to let those interested know that I used the TSA approved padlocks and had absolutely no problems. They were on four large carryons. Not one was damaged, opened or lost. This was flying out of JFK - MCO and on the return as well. :thumbsup2

We just use twist ties to keep the zippers shut.

2 out of 3 times my bag has been searched with the note inside. My guess is the shape of my hair dryer looks suspicious....
Anyway, they have never replaced anything on the zippers and my bag has always been fine (so far ;) )

Hey First timer!!! I totally forgot to come over and say "bye". The afternoon was horrible. That's another story...DH has his laptop. Send me a pm and I'll respond.

We're going to use cable ties tomorrow. Dh has a bunch from work in different colors so we'll see. I'm bringing my cane and it's can be made smaller. I have a feeling that maybe I should carry it and not pack it. It could look suspicious also.

Little chains like the ones on key chains. The little ball ones...i am having trouble explaining. Oh I know they are like the chains on a fan. The pull chain. We use those. Small ones from the hardware store. They keep the zippers together. Of course if someone wanted to steal from the bag they could open it right up. We also use small carabiners to keep the zippers closed. We have never had a problem. DD and DH are treveling to UK in a few days. I am going to get some locks at AAA for them. My concern is if the bags don't make it to them (they have to take a flight from Roc. NY to NY city, then to Glaskow then to Manchester) they will at least be locked if they are left at the airport.

If they cut off / remove ties to search your bag they are supposed to replace them according to something that was on the TSA website and news stories about 1-2 years ago.
