Going to the world with no CC.

Here is my "system" if you can call it that. I have a CC that I keep in a platic dish filled with water in the freezer. It only comes out if I am traveling. Personally, I would never feel comfortable/safe traveling without one just in case of emergency.

I live on cash from a day to day basis, and i haven't run into any trouble at all. Plus if I see a five dollar bill left in my wallet, i'm less likely to spend it vs five bucks sitting in the bank. Electric and cable bills are paid in person, in cash, and there's a 2$ fee for paying your bill with a CC...
Rent has always been paid with a money order. Best 78 cents spent each month. That's cause I get mine at publix, but places like amscot and other cash advance stores don't charge a fee for a money order and it has to be bought with cash.

Disney still honors travellers checks and they are used quite often. So the OP isn't a sitting duck. But i've seen several people pull out their wallets with wads of cash, 100s of dollars. So it's not uncommon. Disney gift cards can be bought almost anywhere now as well, easier for payment, but not as safe as travellers checks.

And if an emergency comes up, there's a sun trust bank at DTD and chase ATMs throughout the parks. And even small no name credit unions have their own network which allows a person to do their banking at another credit union. This is what i do every week cause my bank is small, no named, and only located in miami/ft lauderdale. Only on 2 occasions have I needed to actually drive down there,. And once was more of a time issue, i couldn't wait on mail and faxes to be done to get my new bank card.

My only advise would be to bring plenty of extra cash with you.

Here's what happened to me one trip. While we were traveling a hurricane came through. The airports were closed. We ended up having to stay in Fl an extra 3 days before we could get flights back home. I needed my cc for the extra days in the hotel and food. There's no way I would travel without having a cc with me.

I agree! We had a similar situation this past Dec. DS6 got really sick 1/2 through our vacation. We had to take him to the Centra Care clinic, buy extra medicines, extend our stay 2 nights, change flights, pay for extra food for the 2 days....you get the idea. Fortunately we had the funds to cover our expenses..I am all for cash/no credit cards..but what would you do if you needed a lot of extra $$ in case of an emergency? :confused3

We too do NO credit cards!!! However, we do use Debit Cards. This takes care of the reservation situation (hotel, rental car, etc). It's also very easy to transfer money from savings to checking and use your Debit if you find you need more money then planned.

I really don't think you need a credit OR debit card to go to WDW. Purchase your airfare with paypal which is linked to your checking account (you don't HAVE to register a CC on paypal). If you take ME you don't need a car.

You do NOT have to give them a CC at check in. You just say you don't want to be able to charge on your room key. IF you wanted, you could just start purchasing disney GC's at the Disney Store, Walgreen's, etc., and when you check in, you give them the GC's, they apply them to your account and you can still use your room keys to charge. Or you can even do that with plain ol' cash. Makes it easier than having to bring cash to the parks.

I am glad that I am not that only one that don't use credit cards. They are evil. All you need is a debit card. CASH IS KING

Not if you put cash on your account at check in.

I did this...Instead of a credit card, I just gave them $$$$ and we used our KTTWC against that. Went to Guest Services every couple of days to keep an eye on the tab..worked out great.

Credit Cards are not evil...that is just a stupid statement.

My "evil" credit card has helped my get free hotel rooms for the last 10+ years...all while paying no annual fee or interest. It has cost me nothing, yet has saved me thousands of dollars.

An item is not evil, just becuase some people are not smart enough and / or responsible enough to use it wisely.

Good for you. It's not a stupid statement. Only because you think it's a stupid statement doesn't mean it is.

It was a stupid statement and just because you believe your statement to be true doesnt mean it is.

It is a couple of inch piece of plastic rectangle that on it's own just sits there and does nothing. How can it be evil?? That's like saying a pen is evil or a computer.

To be used it has to be picked up and used by a person....that person can be evil, stupid, irresponsible and the like but the object in question relies on a person to choose what to do with it. If you or others make bad choices with it, then you should blame yourself for that and not the card.

Ouch!

It wasn't a stupid statement. That is your opinion that it is a stupid statement. I never said I was right did I. I just said they are evil. It's not a fact it's my opinion. Just like you said my statement was stupid it's just your opinion and your opinion really doesn't mean anything to me.

I agree... Nothing about an inanimate object is inherently evil! I can respect not wanting a card, but don't blame it for one's (responsible/irresponsible/evil/whathaveyou) use of it.

It's an opinion, but that doesn't make it a smart or correct one.

^^ My thoughts exactly. Has to be one of the silliest statements I've seen on any board.

There are pros and cons to any method of transacting. I use credit cards to my advantage (don't pay interest or fees, lots of rewards earned, payment protection for online purchases, etc.) but if others can't or don't, that's their choice.

I agree...if not having a CC works for someone that's great, people have to do what works best for them.

However, I just had to laugh when it is called EVIL......unles maybe they have a special card that goes around doing really mean things when they aren't looking!

Imagine those commericals....

Voice over guy : "Get the new EVIL credit card from Chase. Not only do you earn rewards points, you also have someone to do all your dirty work. Now, when you need to enact a little revenge just use the new CHASE EVIL Card!!"

We have no credit cards or ATM/debit cards and go to Disney twice a year. We just go with a budget, some gift cards, & cash. Never had a problem!

Western Union pretty much invented sending money from one place to another.

Western Union pretty much invented sending money from one place to another.

And how would Western Union help you if you need to change your flights, or if you need to pay for emergency medical care ASAP? Standing in a clinic that requires a payment for your child to be seen, I promise you the last thing you want to be thinking about is where is the closest Western Union.

I dont have any CC's. I do have a visa check card linked to my checking account. I use it when going to WDW. They ask if I want a card on the room and I give them that card and they have always taken it. I never even thought about getting gift cards, thats a good idea...

While I do not think that credit cards are evil, I think I understand where that particular poster was coming from. A lot of people just don't quite "get it" that they have to pay that money back. If they don't pay it back in full, they have to pay interest. They don't quite get the fact that a credit card is essentially a loan.

With that said, as a person who has previously gotten into trouble with debt, the past 5+ years I have rebounded beautifully. I now **wisely** use credit and do not use more than I can afford to pay back. I use my CC all the time for groceries and gas because I earn cash rewards and points. So, as long as CC's are used **wisely** they are perfectly fine.

For what it's worth, I do not travel anywhere without a high limit credit card. Even if I'm going out for the night and carrying a clutch bag or a wristlet, I always pop a high limit credit card into my bag because you just NEVER know!

While I may have the cash to pay for certain things, I might now have it accessible right this very moment when my car breaks down and I need to pay for a tow. However, I can put it on my CC, transfer the money out of savings into my checking account, and pay off the CC in full.

2nd, for those of you that do operate in cash only and do not even have a checking account, do you realize how much extra you pay for cash only?

-ATM fees
-Money order fees
-Someone mentioned paying bills w/CC add on extra fees
-Western Union, other wires
-Stamps & envelopes
-Etc

I pay all of my bills through my bank's online bill pay. I don't ever have to buy stamps and a book of 40 checks has lasted me almost 3 years. Another reason to always use my check card or credit card everywhere.

To each their own, but for my personal circumstances, I couldn't live or even feel comfortable traveling without a credit card.
