Going on disney dream cruise need help

Am going on a disney dream cruise next week then wdw the week after. I was bringing my canon 5d3 with 16-35 and 24-70 lenses for wdw. Not sure what focal lengths and if it is a pain to use a pro dslr on the boat. Was considering a waterproof like the nikon aw120 for excursions and a sony nex 6 with 16-50 for the boat. Any suggestions from someone who has been down this path? Also I will be with a group of 10 so need to be able to photograph all of us.

We went on a week long Disney Magic cruise many years ago. I did take my DSLR and had no problems and took MANY photos. Back then I only had the kit lens 18-55 and the 70-300. I also took a small water camera for our swimming with the dolphins excursion. Have a great time...we want to do another Disney cruise in the future!

I've been perfectly comfortable using a dSLR on the ship. I'll be bringing my Sony a99 full frame on my next cruise.
On my last cruise, took the dSLR everywhere except the beach. To the beach, I took a Rx100.

Why do you think bringing a dSLR on a ship would be a problem?

First what did you carry the rx100 in to keep it dry?

Second my wife has me thinking it will be a lot to carry a big dslr everywhere on the ship.

Just kept the rx100 out of the water, though I did come close to almost dropping it, lol.

Carrying a dSLR on the ship is much easier than carrying it around Disney world! Much less walking, more places to sit down. Your room is never that far away.
I might keep a small prime on my camera when walking around instead of a bulky lens. But my dSLR with a prime lens is probably smaller than a Nex with a bulky zoom lens.

I know for some people, even something like the rx100 is too big.
But if you're comfortable enough carrying a full frame dSLR around Disney World, then a cruise ship is easy.

I took my 5d3 on the Wonder last year. I switched over from a 7D and a 40D before that so I couldn't use my 17-55 2.8 is anymore. I had to make due with my 24-105 f4 is. It was ok but wish I had something faster and wider. I did take my 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 with me, so that helped, but 50 wasn't wide enough in some cases.

I did take my 580EX with me, but it was kind of cumbersome to carry around a 5d3 w/ 24-105 and 580ex. I ended up just taking the 5d3 with 50 mounted and shooting mostly available light and boosting iso up to iso 3200-6400. It worked out decently, but I did find myself wishing I had something wider. I just picked up a 35 f2 is for our next cruise next year.

I think you should be good with the 16-35 and 24-70 on the 5d3. just be conscious about condensation build up, and give your gear a bit of time to warm up before swapping lenses or shooting outside (after coming from AC interior of the ship) and you should be good.

There are a lot of great photo ops on the ships. So I'd definitely take the DSLR. If anything, I'd take the smaller camera during the dinners.

Even then, I liked taking my DSLR to dinner; because we would do character photos before/after dinner. So it was useful then. But if I had something pretty dependable that was smaller, i would've gone that route.

I am going to be boarding the ship in an hour and plan to use my dslr for everything except dinners or any other time a large dslr is too big. Not sure if taking a dslr on the islands is ok. I want a nice shot of a palmtreed whites sandy beach shot.

Have a great trip. Going on a Disney cruise in 2 1/2 months, so can't wait to see your shots.

I'd even bring the camera to dinner --- It's easy enough to keep it in the camera bag, at your feet. Just as long as you don't forget it and leave it behind.

The islands are really the issue -- A good camera doesn't get along well with sand and water!
But the 5Diii is weather sealed.....
I personally wouldn't change lenses anywhere near sand. And if you plan on actually going into the ocean, I'd be hesitant to leave such an expensive camera unguarded on the beach.

So as long as you are keeping the camera around your neck, and aren't going to change lenses, I'd have no problem bringing it along on the island. If you want a relaxing day of swimming in the ocean, I'd probably leave it behind on the ship.
