Q1: best and easiest way to get from poly to whispering Canyon?
Q2: if my reservation is for 6pm, what time would you leave Poly?

boat from Poly to MK then boat from MK to WL :) and we would leave poly around 4:30, never know if you miss a boat, then wait 20 min for the next one, same process at MK to wl. If you end up catching the boat right away on both legs then you get to wander around WL and hang in the lobby a bit!

The fastest would be to drive or taxi. Otherwise either boat or monorail to the Magic Kingdom and then the boat to the Wilderness Lodge. A car could take 15 minutes by other methods, 20 to 50, depending on if you catch the boat at the right time.

I would think that the monorail to MK would be a little faster than the boat, unless you were lucky enough to get a boat quickly. The boat to WL is the best way to get there and the ride is about 14 minutes long. You usually don't have to wait more than 15 to 20 minutes for a boat. I would give yourself at least 45 minutes to get there by Disney transport. You can explore the resort or stop for a drink at Geyser Point if you get there early. :)

Easiest/best? CAB. Under $10 per leg, with 20% tip.
CHEAPEST? Monorail to MK, bus to WL.
Time to leave: 4:30 PM, on WDW free transportation.
Cab? 6PM less 10 Minute transit (traffic), less 15 minute wait: about 5:30 PM.

our experience is boat is faster, the monorail now you have to go through bag check, wait for monorail and then stand a chance it stops on tracks for a while before it restarts, we LOVE riding the monorail for fun but if we are pressed for time the boat is far quicker

We would most definitely take an Uber. We were trying to get to Ohana once and planned to use MK as our transfer point. Got to MK, both the boat and monorail were down due to a horrible storm. We were very late but in that situation Ohana understood. But, it was stressful and a mess so we said "never again." From now on when we're doing a resort to resort trip, we uber, always.

(If we had known better during the Ohana mess, we would've walked to the Contemporary and ubered from there, but it didn't occur to us)

We stayed at the Poly last year and went to Hoop Dee Doo. It was really quick to do the boats. We lucked into a Campground boat just pulling up as we were at MK and just did a quick hop over to the other dock and loaded right up.

Fastest? Uber or drive.
As others mentioned, you can take the boat from Poly to Mk, and then a boat from MK to Wilderness.
If your reservations are at 6, I would leave about 4:30. Wilderness is beautiful and you want to spend time walking around either before or after dinner, or both. The lobby is breathtaking. Love sitting and reading by the fireplace.

Quick question. I'll be staying at the WL and having dinner one night at Narcoossee's. I was planning on taking the Monorail after dinner from the GF to the Contemporary and then the Shuttle Boat from Contemporary right to the WL. Would this not be faster than going to MK first?

it would work but how fast it is depends entirely on where the boats are at any given time so no way to tell what would be faster.

Since from the GF the monorail will first stop at MK before CR, I'd just get off there and grab that boat.

also the boats and monorail are closer to each other at the MK than at the resorts.

Its a good option. I think it all depends on how full the monorail is. in the evening, it may not be too bad. The GF is the last stop before MK and I have been on the monorail when they have stopped at the GF, and if nobody got off there, nobody got on as it was full. But that was more common in the morning.

We did it last year when we did a Monorail Pub Crawl. After a stop at Nacoossee's and Mizners we took the Monorail from GF to Contemporary and the Launch to WL. I don't remember how long it took since we were enjoying a few cocktails and in no rush but I don't remember it being that long.
