My friend and I are trying a new sushi restaurant tomorrow. I don't know why I've been having cravings...since I've only ever had a California roll. But...nevertheless....we are going. So, any suggestions for me on what to try???

If you are feeling adventurous, try nigiri sushi, it's the pad of rice with a piece of (usually) raw fish on top. These are some good ones to try, very flavorful

tuna (maguro)
fatty tuna-OMG (knees buckle)
salmon (sake)
eel (unagi)
I personally love saba (mackeral), but it does have a bit of a fishy taste.
I like squid (ika) but for a newbie, it can be a bit rubbery.Tempura sushi is great-has a nice crunch to it.

Also, try a roll (maki sushi) that has spicy tuna, or spicy whatever-very good if you like spice. Some places are very mild, some much spicier.

Enjoy!

Thanks!!! I saw the sake sushi on the menu and the tempura sushi also. I went to a true Japanese restaurant on a date years ago (little hole in the wall place--and my date spoke Japanese to the owner) but he ordered everything for me and I have no idea what anything was--although I think it was mostly tempura.....

I do like spicy so maybe I'll try something you suggested!

Man, I miss sushi so much. It's on my list of "things to do the second this baby is outside my body". :rotfl2:

I would probably order a bunch of different types of maki (rolls) - these will be closest in style to California Rolls and easiest for a "beginner" to eat and try different things. If you're not so into the raw stuff, futo (veggie - there are many different types, but a common futo maki has cucumber, japanese pickle, and fried egg in it) rolls are really good, as well as salmon skin rolls and anything with crab in it. Cucumber rolls are the most tame thing you will find on the menu, in most places. :lmao:

If you are willing to try raw fish (and I would highly recommend it - I have gotten to the point where I believe that some fish should only be eaten raw), salmon rolls, tuna rolls, and spicy tuna rolls are pretty safe ones to try. If you like raw fish, sashimi is awesome - it's just a plate of sliced sushi-grade fish. Mmmmm. There are different types of sushi that use different parts or different grades of the same fish. For example, toro is fatty tuna and it is DELICIOUS. Regular tuna is also good, but it doesn't have the same melt in your mouth texture. Ask about anything you're not sure of.

Beyond that, each restaurant will have its own specialties - try anything that sounds appetizing! Some sushi restaurants have rolls that have been dipped in tempura batter and fried, "crunchy" rolls with tempura "crunchies" inside it, rolls with cream cheese fillings, etc. If it sounds good to you, give it a shot!

Mmmm.... I'm so hungry now! :lmao:

I love sushi. I almost always go with tuna, salmon, and cucumber as my main 3. I don't like any of the sauces or anything and don't even use soy sauce, just the pickled ginger.

I also always get miso soup, it is among my favorite soups.

My friend that I'm meeting there for lunch is my "adventurous eating out friend." We always try new places. I've eaten Thai food and Ethiopian food with her that my DH would never, ever be interested in trying! So, I want to really try it. I'm actually reading a website on how to eat sushi so I won't look like a total idiot! :)

Crap! How did I forget miso soup? Also, edamame (steamed soy beans in the shell, lightly salted) make a delicious appetizer to snack on while you're waiting for your sushi.

I love (most) ethnic foods. Here in Cleveland we have the Cleveland Counsel on World Affairs and the Young Professionals part of the group has a dinner the first Wednesday of every month at a different ethnic restaurant. Tomorrow it is at a French restaurant but I may not be able to go because it is a busy week for me.

There is a local Ethiopian place that is one of my top 3 restaurants anywhere. I love it. I always chuckle when people talk about the "adventurous" food at Boma. I love Boma, but if anyone thinks that is adventurous they don't know that they are missing (IMO of course).

I'm not a fan of seafood at all but I did try a spicy tuna roll the other night and liked it.

I love sushi places that have sweet potato rolls. So delicious!

Tuna! Tuna! Tuna!

Nigiri or Sashimi, it doesn't matter...White Tuna is really good too!!

mmm, now you got me thinking about it...

Since you say you usually go with California roll I'd suggest as a beginner you stick with rolls for your intro to actual raw sushi. Most houses have a house specialty roll and lots with cooked fish if you prefer. There also alot of vegetarian options that are nice to try. Personally I love Spicy rolls with either salmon or tuna and I love sashimi. If you like caviar you can ask them to add tobiko to it or any other item you like. I would definitely try eel if you haven't before its grilled and delicious try it in a roll first. No matter what you try if you find you don't like the raw fish don't do it. There are so many fun things on the menu that are cooked you shouldn't have to eat anything you don't like and after a few saki you can get more adventurous.

My "unadventurous" DH is willing to TRY things sometimes....if I convince him to do so. He'll eat it, but he'll let me know if 1. I never need to make that recipie again or 2. we never need to visit that restaurant again. But he does like Boma--probably because there are a lot of choices. He doesn't care for spicy foods at all, and I love different flavors and spices.

...salmon is really good also - the BEST place near my house is Maguro...they have a crunchy spicy tuna roll and a crunchy spicy salmon roll that is TO DIE FOR!! In fact, we are going there today for sushi....:woohoo:

....also two of my faves...:thumbsup2

I don't like sushi, but DF LOVES it. His favorites are:

Spicy salmon roll
Spicy tuna roll
Crunch roll (cream cheese, crunch, crab meat, scallion, smelt fish roe)
Dynamite roll (spicy tuna, yellowtail, scallion)

that's me! I love spicy tuna rolls and raw tuna, but don't like seafood in general.

Now I'm really craving it!

Lucky you!!! I've been craving sushi lately

White tuna is the bomb!!!
Spicy tuna roll is my favorite
Tamago (sp?) is good too...no seafood there, just egg. It's very pretty too.

And so if I try all these suggestions, will I be able to move after I eat???? :lmao:

Seriously, thank you everyone for your suggestions! I'm actually pretty excited about this today! I'll let you know what I try and how I like it. I made a list of what people liked and checked the online menu for the place we are going and I see a lot of your suggestions there...everything is starting to sound really good!

Yummy - I tried Ethiopian food for the first time a few months ago at a local place, and loved it. We have many sushi places here, Thai, Vietamese, French, Greek, Spanish, Japansese, Chinese... our Mexican restaurants aren't that great, however. I love the fun rolls - the $10+ ones - very colorful!
