Gluten Free Meals and Snacks

The cake [itself, not with the fancy presentation and other items] closely resembles what I most often got for dessert on my DCL cruises. I am not GF, but due to my allergies, which include dairy, often end up with bakery options that are also GF.

On one cruise they actually brought me a box of Namaste chocolate cake mix to make sure it was ok for them to use. Namaste is top-10 free, including GF. Not sure if that is the mix they always use for the mini chocolate cake-thing they make me, but at least on that sailing it was what they used.

I usually ask for "chef's choice" for dessert. I get chocolate cake with chocolate sauce; chocolate cake with raspberry sauce; chocolate cake with chocolate and raspberry sauce; a chocolate mousssy thing; a strawberry moussy thing (very yummy). All of it is dairy, peanut, tree nut, and seafood-free, and most or all of it also GF.

It may well be the same base that is used. I know BOATHOUSE makes things "scratch" in their kitchens - and the chef I spoke with the second time I was there said he tells his friends to order the "allergy dessert" there because he thinks it's better than the other desserts they have. It is delicious.

Here is a picture of a couple of the desserts from our B2B on the Dream in 2015 (er, these were both the same night :-) ):

The one on the left is chef's choice, the one on the right is modified from the menu - IIRC it was "strawberry shortcake" made allergy safe.

I am anaphylactic allergic to milk, tree nuts, peanuts, and seafood. I also c annot have coffee or aspartame.

My fallback meal on DCL when I don't feel like anything else is plain chicken breast, plain rice, and steamed veggies. This is a typical serving of it, from our B2B on the Dream in 2015:

I shall have to remember to ask about "Chef's Choice" for dessert. Not that I mind "reverting" to Mickey Bars... :P

Last cruise I told my server that creme brulee was my favorite. He went out of his way to get me creme brulee 4 of the 7 nights we were on board. I don't know how he did it, and they were not all the same type. It does not hurt to inform your server of your preferences, they will work with you!

A family on the Magic last week asked about gluten free cookies in Cabanas. The CM brought out a box that looked like they could have been Girl Scout cookies and gave the box to the family. I didn't have any, but they said the cookies were delicious.

DW requested GF cookies from room service on the Magic. They delivered a box of the Enjoy Life chocolate chip cookies. To her taste, these are not as good as the OMG GF chocolate chip cookies that they sell around WDW, but better than no GF cookies at all. On the WBTA cruise on the Magic in 2016, our head server had a plateful of the factory-wrapped OMG cookies delivered to our stateroom after DW had had one for dessert one evening.

I also have a peanut allergy (though thankfully mine is a rare mild allergy), have been trying to avoid high-lactose dairy items as well as aspartame for the same annoying health reasons! I expect I will likely eat this meal pretty much every night to avoid any potential issues (but I also like it a lot so it's all good!)

To be fair to both cruise lines, desserts in general are tough with GF flour. It took us a quite a while to find flour combos that don’t give you that off flavor, best description I got is a light metallic taste.

I totally agree! Slightly metallic with a weird boxed mashed potato/tapioca pudding aftertaste! :crazy2: I'm still experimenting myself...I'm sure I will find a winner!

ONe of t he reasons we cruise DCL is because of how well they handle food allergies. I have had many great meals on board. We ensure DCL knows of our allergies [and the sensitivities, which are not allergies, but which make me immediately ill: both coffee and aspartame, even trace amounts, trigger immediate severe migraines for me :-( ] well in advance, and then we confirm that they have the info once on board [via the dining changes session and again with our servers the first meal].

At dinner each night we pre0order our meals for the next day, which gives the chefs more opportunity to adapt and gives more options. So for example, almost all the soups are possible as safe and dairy-free. Well, I haven't tried the baked potatoe cheese soup thing, but that would just be silly since the cheese is so important to the soup. But butternut squash, tomato, french onion. All doable with advance notice. Many of the main entrees they can also adapt.

Point is, don't feel that you have to limit yourself to plain chicken, rice, and steamed veggies. They can make many things safe. have the conversation with your servers about what you would LIKE to have and they will talk with you about what can be done [or if something just can't be]. For dairy it is often as simple as substituting a sauce, or cooking something with oil instead of butter. With an allergy there is a bit more involved, including taking precautions to prevent cross contact/contamination, but that does not mean it is not doable.

Finally, while one should always follow the advice of one's doctor, something to keep in mind with respect to food allergies and their severity: https://www.allergicliving.com/expe...-a-child-has-a-food-allergy-thats-not-severe/ .
