I was so moved listening to the cruise Podcast, that I immediately started thinking of ways we could raise money. I have lots of ideas (including a 5k run/walk I'm still trying to figure out how to make happen), run through my head since December.
I really wanted to get our kids in on this. They are young still, but they are givers, and definitely old enough to understand the basics of helping others out (4 and 6 years old). So, I decided that we would have a family garage sale-our first ever. The kids will go through their belongings and decide what to sell in the special GKTW section. We will make signs explaining GKTW and Power of 10 that the kids will help make.
Long story short(er), I explained GKTW to our kids by saying it is a place where sick children can go and visit Disney World. Ever since this discussion, our kids have been finding things to "give for the sick kids". They begin talking about it out of no where and are really excited to help make a difference. The compassion they show for children they haven't even seen, let alone know, is breathtaking and heart warming. I showed them the GKTW website today-toured the village via photos-and explained that it is a resort like AKL, only better. They both wanted to go there.
I just wanted to share the beginning of our little story in the hopes that it will inspire you. Even if our garage sale only makes $10, every little bit helps make a difference. FYI, the sale is a few weeks away. I can't wait.
