I was so moved listening to the cruise Podcast, that I immediately started thinking of ways we could raise money. I have lots of ideas (including a 5k run/walk I'm still trying to figure out how to make happen), run through my head since December.

I really wanted to get our kids in on this. They are young still, but they are givers, and definitely old enough to understand the basics of helping others out (4 and 6 years old). So, I decided that we would have a family garage sale-our first ever. The kids will go through their belongings and decide what to sell in the special GKTW section. We will make signs explaining GKTW and Power of 10 that the kids will help make.

Long story short(er), I explained GKTW to our kids by saying it is a place where sick children can go and visit Disney World. Ever since this discussion, our kids have been finding things to "give for the sick kids". They begin talking about it out of no where and are really excited to help make a difference. The compassion they show for children they haven't even seen, let alone know, is breathtaking and heart warming. I showed them the GKTW website today-toured the village via photos-and explained that it is a resort like AKL, only better. They both wanted to go there. :)

I just wanted to share the beginning of our little story in the hopes that it will inspire you. Even if our garage sale only makes $10, every little bit helps make a difference. FYI, the sale is a few weeks away. I can't wait.

I love the giving spirit you are instill in your children!

I have a little experience in producing a 5K walk/run and would be happy to lend my expertise! I'll Pm you.

What a great idea.:cool1:

I look forward to reading updates about how your garage sale went.

I love that the kids have taken this to heart and are searching for things to give! :thumbsup2

Day one of the sale and the kids have raised $10.75 so far!!! One couple had even been there with their granddaughter.

I know GKTW held a 5K on their grounds last November. Logistically, it wasn't possible for a lot of folks to join them. What would be the difficulty level of holding either a simultaneous/virtual 5K the same day at different locations around the country?

As I have been told many times... You know the rule... If you get it going let us know as this might entice me to get off the couch and run

As long as there is a safe place (ice free) it can be done. Don't forget the WDW ½ and Full Marathons of 2010 were run in below freezing weather with sleet and snow.

Your kids may enjoy looking at some of the pictures of our very own DIS families that are going to GKTW...we have a ton of trip reports and such that are so sweet.

You can follow the blue link in my siggie to the wish trippers thread and there are a ton of stories there. :)

And Lauren's TR is in PINK...and Matty's story is by the Santa hat...and Lucas was the One Magical Morning one...they are all awesome and your kids will probably love to see what they got to do. :) The kids have such a blast...it is even BIGGER than just GKTW...these trips are awesome for them! :)

What a great idea !!! I also came up with an idea of something to auction off, but I don't want to say yet, unless it works out. I've made the contact, just waiting to hear back.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone! I'm so proud of them. The day 1 total is $26.75!:banana::banana:

I am bursting with pride!:love:

Every time a customer arrives, the kids are running to tell them about GKTW, and showing them the sign they made. Only a few hours of the sale left, and the kids have made a grand total of $53 for GKTW!!!:banana::banana: I know it might not seem like much, but I'm sure every little bit helps. Above all, this is kids giving to kids, and I am so proud of them. The last customer bought a $.25 item and told them to keep the change ($5). We also had the opportunity to talk with about 5 families who have been to the Village, or have grandkids that have. Folks are very complementary of them giving to such a worthy cause. One mother this morning said she liked the idea so much, she is going to do the same thing with her kids at their sale later this month. :cloud9:

Pete, thanks for challenging us to think outside the box for Power of 10. I'm so glad we could help.

((sorry if while reading this you get hit in the head with one of my buttons as they pop off from pride :)))

Wonderful idea!

I'd like to do something like this with my DD. We really need to get rid of some of her toys before her birthday next month and I've been trying to figure out a way to help her understand giving to others.

It worked really well. Our 4 year old would randomly bring me something and say "I want to sell this for the sick kids what go to Give Kids da Would." :cutie:
