My DH and I are in the process of seeing if we can do insemination. I have to go for an HSG test to see if my tubes are open as soon as I am done with my period. I opened the thread about the worst procedures you have ever had, :earseek: and I had no clue to what an Episiotomy was so I search it and I almost passed out. (It had a picture) And then when I read what it was I really got scared. I can hardly tolerate any pain. But if we can have a baby it would be worth it. I know that more than makes up for everything. But, have you ever had second thoughts after hearing about how painful it is? If I can hardly stand any pain should I reconsider? I am really nervous now. Thank you.

I had 3 babies,,all normal deliveries..My total time of labor was less than 8 hours..My dd took 5...DS 1 and a half.. My youngest took, and I kid you not less than 40 minutes from my water breaking to the delivery..I was always afraid that If I had another one I'd have a contraction and he's shoot out like a football..Ever see Big FISh?

I did have an episiotomy with my first..I had an epidural and didn't feel it.
I had my second naturally.. My labor was too quick for them to put in the epidural.. I tore the second time..I didn't feel the tearing..That area gets numb, but I did feel them stitch it up,so they gave me more numbing meds
My experiences were not bad

Yeah I saw Big Fish. LOL. I love that movie. Thank you, that makes me feel better. I know there are good and bad so I hoping for the good. I am feeling all sorts of stuff. Scared, excited, nervous and overwhelmed. I can use all the advice I can get. I like getting other opinion besides family because they want a baby just as bad as me so they are full of all happy stories. I know there is more to it than they are telling me. Thank You again.

For me the worst thing is the stirrups..The being exposed to the world.. And it's messy and slimy

I have never had an episiotomy because my first son was so small and my second son was delivered via c-section, which for me was a breeze! My SIL has two episiotomies, and said the first one was a breeze, and the second one was painful because they let her tear instead of cutting (technically not an episiotomy). I guess in general, they will give you meds to keep you comfortable afterwards, and during, you won't have any idea whats going on... The end result is soo worth it, you (well, most women) would be willing to go through anything to have another.

I have had 2 babies and I did not have an episiotomy either time. More and more doctors are getting away from that according to many articles that I have read and also accroding to me doctor (who does not do them unless absolutely necessary). My doctor says the the healing time from tearing is much less.

I had an epidural both times and the only pain that I felt during my labor were the contractions prior to the epidural. Pain was never a issue with me when I was thinking about delivery it was all of the stuff that happens to your body after that I was more concerned about.

My SIL had baby #1 with no epidural. She said it was the worst pain that she had ever experienced and that while she was really proud of herself for not getting the epi the next baby would be different. Fast forward to baby #2, she planned to get the epi when she went into labor, but the labor was so quick they couldn't do one. So take her experience for what it's worth.

Don't worry so much about the pain. Having a baby is well worth it all. I hope that your tests give you good results. My girlfriend and her husband just did IVF and she's having twins in November!

You know, I had an episiotomy and epidural and it really just factored into the whole "labor and delivery" thing, if you know what I mean. It was painful, yes, but you get through it and at the end you have this beautiful baby in front of you just begging for love :flower: I recall the first few days at home as painful cause the stitches hurt! But it will all be ok, please, please, do not stress over the pain or discomfort - it will not be a factor in your life afterwords, trust me - best of luck to you! :)

I had 3 babies, no drugs at all. My babies were 7.12, 9.0 and 9.4.

I really didn't feel the cuts at all. First baby they used forceps and I didn't feel that either. By the time you are pushing so hard I don't think you feel too much beyond the sensation from the babies head coming down and out.

Of course thats just me. I have a bit of a high pain threshold. I walked around for 3 weeks with a broken foot before it got to the point where I couldn't take the pain anymore.

Please remember they will give you pain relieve if you request it, childbirth does not have to be a painful experience.

This made me LOL! I am due in about 5 1/2 weeks (give or take a little) and I know all of the things that could happen but none of it really bothers me as much as the idea of being in the stupid stirrups. Those things are already so uncomfortable and then to be in such a position that you feel like you are literally exposed to the whole world...that is what bothers me the most.

And everyone I have talked to has made the episiotomy seem like it wasn't as bad as you'd think b/c they numb you first. That is why that doesn't freak me out. I would recommend that after you find out you are preg. you take a childbirth class of some sort. It answers a lot of these questions and it eases many of the fears you will probably have. At least it has for me! Good luck!

I found it funny too, but more than the stir-ups, I worried about the "accidents" that tend to happen! Another reason I thank God for my c-section... couldn't have hubby see that!! :crazy2:

They have special stirrups for labor..
As for the numbing for the epestiotomy.. If you have an epi,you will be numd..If you have pushed for a while the area feels numb..They don't always numb you..I would tell them before hand that you want that

Oh, really? I was told that my hospital will automatically numb you for an episiotomy (if one is necessary) so I guess I thought that was just common procedure at all hospitals. Learn something new every day! ;)

Oh and I forgot about the accidents...yeah, that is another thing that bothers me, but I am not letting anything get to me that much b/c I realize it is all just a part of it and I agree with everyone who said that the end result will all be worth it. I am just ready to finally meet this person...I don't care what I have to go through to do it...although of course I am hoping for an easy delivery! ;)

Well,I guess since my youngest is 10 I should have said.In my experience..It may be an old policy,or just my hospitals policy

I never had any accidents either

That's okay. It could just be a common procedure at some hospitals, not all, and it is good if those that are thinking of having a baby or are currently preg. know that their hospital may not do it automatically. I never even thought of it but my hospital does do some things differently so it's possible.

And I am hoping I will be lucky and not have any accidents either, but I am not going to stress over it. It does make me feel better knowing that you never had any and many others I know didn't either so maybe I will be lucky and not have any either! :)

I didn't mean to scare you about the accidents, I think they're pretty rare now because they cut you off from eating and drinking... sorry! :sunny:

Oh, no, you didn't scare me about it, I promise! I know it isn't as common as it used to be but it could still happen. It is just one of those things that I know could happen that I don't plan to worry too much over. So don't worry that you scared me. I already knew about the accidents b/c my mom had one with my younger brother...lol! Believe me I have heard so many nightmare birth stories by now that I am just not as phased about any of them anymore. Now I WAS completely freaked out the first few months I was preg. and just hearing some of this stuff. But now I am past that. ;)

That's why I hope that you won't let any of this stuff scare you too badly either, Steppdaddy! People also told me scary things that can happen during preg. but I have been lucky and not experienced very many bad things so these things don't necessarily happen to everyone! The best advice I have been told is to just take things that others say will definitely happen with a grain of salt b/c every preg. is different and although I haven't experienced it yet, I believe every delivery is also different.

I'll never understand people's need to tell their horror stories to pregnant women... (I don't consider the accident a horror story, I don't think anyone else would either) Do they think they don't have enough to worry about as it is? I was REALLY nervous about giving birth, mainly I was afraid of getting an epidural, but it came to the point where I would have done to stop the pain, and the epidural was nothing! The rest of my labor was great, until they decided my sons heart rate wasn't staying up, but there was never any true emergency, we nipped it in the bud.

I had my youngest 17 years ago! It seems like yesterday. I doubt that you will have an accident because usually most doctors make sure you do not if you get my drift. I went to all the natural child birth classes and was doing okay with my labor managing the pain. It was the idiot woman in the next room screaming and not knowing what to expect that was bothering me. She was scaring me. I say just think of the worst pain you have ever had with your period and then you will know what labor is like. It is NOT something you cannot stand. My suggestion to you is make sure your doctor orders a stool softener for AFTER you deliver if you get my drift b/c that is when you would be thrilled to have an "accident" if you do go through natural child birth. My labors were very long but my friend had four kids, 1 hour, 1hour, 45 min, and 30 min. On the last one she asked the doctor if he thought she needed an episiotomy and he said, " no, you are like the HOlland tunnel, they could drive a car through you" Good thing she and the doctor had a great relationship. She cracks up every time she thinks of it.

That would be if you are scheduled...I had a GIANT lunch at 2, my water broke at 3 and my daughter was born at 6 so there was no cutting off from food for me LOL.....but I did have a c-section and was totally knocked out (only way to go for me! wake me up when its over LOL!!) Up walking around the next morning, out of the hospital on Monday, shopping in the mall on Tuesday!

:grouphug: Any time a new mom asks me about labor and delivery, I tell her this, "If it was as awful as some people would lead you to believe, no one would ever have more than one." I don't give specifics because I had an odd situation and a difficult delivery and I don't want to scare anyone because it was NOT the norm.

Of course, I only had one kid but that wasn't because of giving birth! :rotfl: Everyone's labor and pain thresholds are different. You'll do just fine.
