Give a day volunteer search showing only American places?????

To the person who had initially entered Disney Land and now wants to use the tickets for Disney World, no problem (? posted on this thread but a couple pages ago) . When you print your vouchers it asks you at this point WDW or DL. Even AFTER this point (when you have printed the voucher) you can still change your mind as it states right on the voucher that you can use it at either park.:goodvibes

btw, vouchers are really cute with a nice picture of Donald on them. They are the full size of a piece pf paper and each voucher has a different barcode on it.

Your fabric choices sound wonderful.

Regarding shipping we put each blanket into a grocery bag (double bagged and tied the bags) and then put all the bags into a large gift bag. Then put the gift bag into a regular box (from No frills). Then used wide clear tape to tape up the box. We mailed ours from the post office (standard mail). From Peterborough to Ottawa it cost $15 and that included POD (proof of delivery) and a small fuel surcharge. It took 4 days for the blankets to arrive in Ottawa.

Is this offer still limited to people in remote areas? There really isn't that much for kids to do.

I went off the poster who said she was in Milton, Vauhan and one other place near Toronto. I'm from Ajax and they allowed my family to participate in this one. It maybe because there are no chances for younger kids.

Thanks very much! We stll have not even got to the final confirmation stage yet. Everything is set up but our day is more than 60 days away (March 27). Once we get within the 60 days we can apparently finish it up. Thanks for answering my question :thanks:

Yes, that was me. We had no issues at all with the blanket activity and are far from remote.

LauraLap---sorry I couldn't remember your name or the other location in your post but it was because of your locations that I decided to try this opportunity and I and my family were accepted. As I already posted, I've put the 4 blankets in the mail yesterday and was told by Canada Post that they should arrive by tomorrow. Just waiting to hear from GAD. So for all of those people who aren't remote but can't find a volunteer opportunity that will include young children please try this one. It was fun going out and buying the material with the kids (Fabriclands sale on fleece is on till Jan 19th) and sitting around and tying the knots as we discussed who will be getting these blankets as well as our upcomming trip in March.

EXACTLY! :goodvibes My DS and DH couldn't come with us yesterday, but we picked fleece that they definitely would have chosen had they been there. And DD and I talked in the car about who would be getting them, and that the recipients get to keep them, that they're not just handed out to different people staying in a particular place. We do a lot of charity work for our church, and this is such a nice change for us. Kids are doing homework so DH and I will begin the cutting on the first blanket ... by the time we're done, the kids will be done their work and able to start in tying.

Now I just need to get off the :surfweb: LOL

and I might just go for the blanket myself. I was thinking of doing something with DD who is 6 and have tried anything that says 6. Am still to hear back from one place and the other said that the community I live in is not participating in the GAD programme. Since I am really bad at sewing or any such thing, plus I get a day off from work for volunteering, I thought, let's give DD some exposure to volunteering. Looks like we might have to give up on that and make blankets instead.

We got our vouchers today! I just want to say thank you to everyone who suggested the blanket activity (and told us how to find it!). My problem was that it was difficult to find local opportunities that requested volunteers outside of business hours, and I couldn't get the time off from work before our upcoming trip. Fortunately we did not run into the "remote area" problem because Calgary isn't exactly remote!

We made 2 baby quilts for boys (took about 1 week to finish them). It cost us about $13 to send them to Ottawa using the cheapest method via Canada Post. They were supposed to arrive there today, so I didn't anticipate having those vouchers so quickly. I am not sure if that was because I attached a note about our trip in February. I was certainly impressed by how quickly we received the email about the vouchers.

fyi- wally hole has flece blankets on sale from 3.97 rite now. size is 50X60 and i think the size requested it 40x60? it does have small trim on the edge, but it's just light string, and if you snip it with scissors it should unravel easily. we snagged two today to complete this for our family, since the kids are 2 and 4 and cant do much else.

amberg@eastlink.ca:
Sorry, what is wally hole?? Our value village is out of fleece blankets.
Thanks!

Oh, I just figured it out:rotfl: Thanks for making us aware of this sale!
I also wanted to mention that although your 2- and 4-year-olds can help with the blankets, I don't believe that they can receive free Disney tickets, as they have to be at least 6. (Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong.) I also have a 4-year-old and would love for her to receive a free ticket, but I'm pretty sure we can't do this.

Have fun making blankets!

OK, I'll bite (at the risk of looking stupid), what is wally hole? I only know Wally Mart.

Hey all!
Just wanted to check in with all of you that have been trying to sign up for opportunities at various canadian locations. I currently work/volunteer at one in Oakville (I think we may be the only one in the GAD program) and we have been having major problems with Disney.
The site has been giving us many many problems. Many requests we have not gotten and we are having to call in to confirm when someone has volunteered. We've been on the phone with disney and their coordinators to try to get this sorted and apparently it is happening with all the canadian programs.
We have had people calling us and stopping by our location to try to volunteer and we can't use them because we won't be able to get them the voucher. (Our director has someone yell at her in frustration and she had to tell them to blame disney - not us. And thanks but no thanks)
I would recommend continuing with the blanket donations as that seems to be working for many of you. Meanwhile, I'll let you all know when this system seems to be working better.

WOW. As frustrating as it has been to try and find an opportunity that would include DD 11 (we ended up doing the blanket one) I can believe that someone who is supposed to be giving of themselves would end up yelling at a supervisor of a volunteer org.

I guess that the idea of a free ticket out weights the idea of giving of oneself. I felt that we weren't necessarally doing enough for this....but given that we all volunteer regularly with the Special Olympics, and the Canadian Progress Clubs as well as my kids volunteer at community events I have to work, it all balances out.

I would hope that most people who do GADGADD as their first experience with volunteering will continue to volunteer and realize what a rewarding experience volunteering can be.

I just wondered how blankets are looking for everyone - I haven't signed up for it yet, but knowing how crafty stuff can be challenging for me (sad but true), I bought some fleece and started one to see how easy it would be for me and my kids. I'm feeling discouraged because some tassles seem longer than others. I'm sure part of my problem is that my fleece has rounded edges (from walmart) and I seem to be having a problem getting a 3-inch corner cut out of it. It's a nice volunteer project and I thought it would be great to finish volunteering early (I wonder how long the free Disney tickets may last?? does anyone have any idea at all? we may have a different volunteer opportunity in March or May and aren't going to Disneyland until probably the summer), but maybe we shouldn't do this one - might the people we send the blankets to say that it's not done well enough?:confused3 Are your tassles all quite even?
Thanks!!

You may want to square off your rounded edges this might make it easier for you. I also found that the tassles were longer on two side I think this is because of the give of the fabric. It will strech more one way than the other therefore when making the tassles it will make the tassles longer on 2 sides. I really don't think this is something they will send back saying it wasn't done correctly. As long as it looks like a child would use it and love it as their own. I know that after making these to send away my kids wanted to make their own blankets so the very next day we be back to Fabricland!

We also had round edges, and just cut them out to make them square. As the pp mentioned, one side was more stretchy than the other, so our tassles are definitely NOT the same length on all sides. Also, I thought the 3 inches they recommended wasn't enough to be able to tie a knot, especially on the "non-stretchy" side.

I agree with the pp. The non strechy side was difficult to knot with only the 3inches. It was managable but more for adults than the kids. I didn't worry about it as two sides had longer tassles and 2 sides had shorter ones.

Thank you both; it makes me feel better that your tassles also were not totally even. I just thought that I hadn't made my corners square enough and this was why I has tassles that were longer on one side (I've only tried two sides so far.) When I look at the blanket this morning, it looks a bit better.
