My 11 year old Angel Tree recipient wears a size 1 in juniors in jeans and her shirts are a medium. Is this equivalent to anything in Girls sizes? I could get her much more in girls than juniors! TIA, as my DD is till only 3! :goodvibes

My DD is a size 12 in kid's clothes and wears an XS in Aero. The size 00 jeans are too big for her. So, maybe a size 1 would be a size 16? Do you know what grade she's in? My 11-year old 6th grader won't wear clothes from the children's department except bottoms because junior sizing doesn't fit her.

No, I'm not sure what grade... I was just hoping to be able to shop in the girls (at least for bottoms) so that I could get her more. I'm think I'll have to stick to juniors just in case. Thanks for the input!

Dd14 "might" be able to wear a kid's 16, but there is no way she would. It wouldn't fit right, either, because she has hips and a small waist. Trust me - she has petite friends, who hate not fitting into junior sizing.

^LOL Thanks!
Shirt size is listed as a 5 and coat as a medium... I guess I'm just overthinking this shopping for someone I don't know! I just can't wait til BF... Hopefully I can get some good deals! As for stores like Aeropostale and Old Navy, how is their sizing for juniors? Old Navy doesn't have a size selection for juniors do they? but Aero is technically Juniors, right?

maybe in waist but its possible they moved up for room to grow and/or already being too tall for kids sizes. The inseams make a huge difference.

My brother was really small in his teens and early 20's even and could wear boys pants for quite a while if they had 30" inseams otherwise they'd fit in waist but not length. The sizing on the kids for waist/hips is so varying from when i worked in Sears in the kids department. Many customers got soooo frustrated shopping for their tween daughters. :guilty:

Sometimes I think dd will be wearing juniors early(guessing by 12) because of her height but its going to be a pain if she can't fit in 0-1 without them falling off. We already shop a size up from her age and hunt for adjustable waists.

My 9 yr old DD wears a junior size 5 bottom and a medium to large junior shirt.

It all depends on the cut.

I would go with the sizes that are listed on the card. My daughter finds a lot of the clothes in the girls department too babyish. They have lots of cartoon animals and writing on them. She would rather have plainer tops.

Thanks for all the replies! I like with sales/Black Friday at JCP, Sears, Aero, and Walmart, I should hopefully get some decent prices on clothing and a coat. Now if only I could find some shoes! LOL

I have a dd who now wears size 3 but when she got curves (a waist and hips), girls sizes no longer did the trick. I think that's the major difference between girls and junior sizes, is accounting for the change in body shape.

I just went shopping for my 10.5 year old this week. She is a 14 girls. I tried a 0 in Jr's and they were about 6 inches longer than the 14's. I don't think for bottoms you can easily go back and forth.

I did get her a vest from the Jr's. It was a medium. She could have fit into a small. In children's tops she is an XL or 14.

My 10 yo wears junior sizes for the length and hip-room. Sometimes girls pants can work for her, but shirts are always too short. She wears a juniors small and 0 pants. When we do find girls clothes that fit, she takes a 12 or 14. If the child has requested juniors sizing, I would suggest buying it. Some girls get curvy early and girl sizing doesn't allow for that.

Thanks for all the replies... I wasn't even thinking of the "fit" of the clothes, but rather the "style"... I'll be shopping in the Juniors dept. for her...

What are your favorite stores for Juniors clothing?

Yes, it really is all about the cut. My DD is a curvy 10YO & I'm thinking we may have to move to juniors in a year or two to get stuff that really fits her body. A lot of kids stuff is cut a bit boxier & while I don't want skintight I do want to show her shape.

Junior sizes tend to be more narrow in the waist than a girls size with the same hip measurements. They also tend to be longer in the sleeves and legs. Jeans fit differently through the seat if you know what I mean. And tops are cut a little fuller in the chest area for juniors while keeping the armholes an appropriate size. I would go with whatever size is listed on the angel tree card. It would stink to get a nice gift only to have it be the wrong size.

Agree that the fits are very different. I'm a perfect size 14 girls most of the time. In juniors, I can wear an XS top usually. However, the pants are very different. The 14 girls have a bigger waist than a 1 or 3 or even most 0's and 2's. However, despite the tops possibly still fitting, I'd stick to jrs. I don't mind wearing girls clothes since they often fit me better. But some teens would hate to wear girls clothes since they think they're for younger kids. As an adult, it's hard for me to find appropriate girls clothings- since the juniors are often not quite my style either. Get her jrs. since that's what was requested.

Aeropostale is a great choice. Last year they had amazing sales leading up to Christmas. In fact, just last week I bought DD jeans for $16 combining a sale and a coupon code. Keep your eye out and you will be able to get her nice stuff for cheap. They sometimes have $5 t-shirts and hoodies for great prices.

My 14 year old can wear either size 14 in girls or 0 in juniors. The biggest difference is that the Juniors things (pants, especially) are much longer. I'm not positive, but I think the junior stuff is cut for curvier hips and chest than the girls stuff.
