Hi everybody--so Steve and I headed out to Costco this morning--not for Black Friday shopping--just for "stuff"--we got a LOT of stuff -- LOL. Believe it or not, we didn't get our fill of turkey at my cousin's house yesterday, so I have a turkey in the oven right now!! LOL--they were half price at Costco. Actually, we went and got two first (one for the freezer) and it was a good thing we did--about fifteen minutes later some restaurant came in and bought all that were left--about 30!!!!!!! I'm probably not going to make all the traditional accompaniments though--I'm cooking the turkey "Mediterranean" style--fresh sage, rosemary and thyme from my garden and stuffed with lemons and oranges--oh and garlic, salt and pepper! I do have some fresh green beans so may cook those up too. Anyway, we're tired from the shopping expedition and post-holiday let-down. Plus, I'm going to work tomorrow. We were going to go get the Christmas tree today but I think it's too early. (Christmas Eve is at my house this year.)

Wendy: sorry you had the family drama. It's been a long-time since we've had a "blow-out" in my family, but there's always a lot of undercurrents that make things tense--I really would prefer to run off to WDW or Disneyland or Vegas or--well, just about anywhere--but since I am the only child don't have the courage to do that to my Mom.

So, I'm looking at Christmas cookie recipes today . . . .hope I have time this year!

Everyone enjoy the rest of Friday!

p.s. I was using my 23-year old (male) cousin's computer to log onto this website and MousePlanet yesterday and he was completely appalled--I'm sure he cleared his history after I left so none of his friends would think that HE was accessing Disney websites!!! LOL

About the no-buying thing, I did look at that youtube link you posted. I'm a little confused though. So you mean you really aren't buying presents for your kids? And they are all ok with that?

We have always been very unconventional with Christmas. We have never taught our kids to believe in Santa Claus (other than the accurate, historical story of St. Nicholas). We didn't want to confuse our kids about the reason for the holiday which we believe is to celebrate the birth of Christ. We have also never bought our kids gifts for Christmas day. Each year on Christmas Eve, they get a new pair of Christmas pajamas to wear that night. And really, that's all they get from us. The abundance of "stuff" they get from other family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) is more than enough, and we have actually had to ask the extended family to tone it down a bit (which they have respected). This year we have asked that they limit their gifts to one thing for the kids (we didn't want to completely steal their joy). But we have asked them to take the extra they would spend and use it for the poor.

So yes, our kids understand. They understand how incredibly blessed we are and how other families are going completely without basic needs (water, food, medicine).

I realize this may rub people the wrong way, but this is kind of my "soap box" currently. I'm feeling so passionately about it and want to share it with as many people as I can in hopes that it will spark people to start changing how they think about Christmas. I don't expect people to stop buying presents altogether, but even buying less than you normally do, or making gifts can make a huge difference.

Anyway, thanks for asking, Beth. I was beginning to think I had offended people or maybe everyone just thinks I'm just NUTS. :rotfl:

Callie, I don't think you're nuts at all. We have always taught our children first and foremost the real reason for Christmas also. My kids knew Santa, but we didn't make a big deal about it. But I will admit, that I love to buy presents. :rolleyes1 I've been weaning down the process for a few years now, which has been hard for me. I love to shop, and decorate, so what can I say?

Anyways, I appreciate you sharing that with us. :grouphug:

Ugh, I'm an utter cast member failure! :[

Cut yourself some slack. You are a great CM!

Steve was cute, but his "fake ignorance" drove me up the wall. He just played it up too much. Now Joe (the little brother that replaced him), HUBBA HUBBA! :lovestruc

I don't get the Joe thing. Would have made me feel like a cougar before the term cougar was used.

You can have some of my monkey bread!

Ok, I'm waiting.

When doing your Christmas cards this year, take just one card and send it to this address. If we pass this on and everyone sends one card, think of how many cards these wonderful special people who have sacrificed so much would get.

When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please send one to the following:

A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20307-5001

Great idea! :thumbsup2

Everything was going great until about 2:20 PM, when we were trying to head out the door and go to my aunt's house. My mom, dad and I got into this huge fight about nothing. I drove to Sacramento in tears and then spent the first 30 minutes locked in my cousin's bathroom, bawling my eyes out. :sad2:

OK!!!!!!!!!! No one make me cry though, please!

Sorry for the drama. There is always family drama. I think its some sort of prereq for the holidays. That is why I opted out of Thanksgiving this year. Hopefully Christmas will go smoothly. It usually does. It just ends up with everyone being drunk and loud.

Boo to family drama! Yay for girls only trips!!!!

:thumbsup2

Yeah, like mine during Halloween.
I was off changing my MySpace page to make it all pretty and Christmasy. :santa:

Now I need to add another thing to my list. Darn. Better get that done tonight.

I got to work today at 6am to finish up some month end items and then later my husband, kids and I are going to the movies, but we can't agree on a movie to watch. My daughter is begging me to see twilight, but I'm not too sure I want her to see it. My husband and son want to see that movie with Samuel L. Jackson & Bernie Mac. My son was a big fan of Bernie Mac before he died so he wants to see his last movie, but I think it's rated "R". I want to see Bolt, but no one else except my son wants to see that, but he'd rather see the Bernie Mac movie (I can't remember the name of the movie right now :upsidedow). Nothing can ever be simple :3dglasses.

So what did you end up seeing? We saw Bolt and I loved it. I absolutely feel in love with the Rhino.

I've taken down all my Thanksgiving stuff and added the rest of the Christmas decorations. Now we are just enjoying a lazy day here at home. :)

I usually put up Christmas stuff this weekend, but since DD's birthday is next week and we are having a "thing" for her, I won't be putting them up till after. And the way it looks, I think I may not even drag out my stuff at all. I already feel an anxiety attack coming on just thinking about it. To please my doc I may just buy a new tree and decorations and just put that up. Will save me some stree thats for sure.

We have always been very unconventional with Christmas. We have never taught our kids to believe in Santa Claus (other than the accurate, historical story of St. Nicholas). That may be true, but I don't think you are nuts. I think its great that you guys have decided what is important to your family and didn't let outsiders influence how you raised your kids and your holiday traditions. DD and I have always adopted a child from the Angel tree to help give back and here at work we always do adopt a family. I think it really helps her to understand how important it is to give to those who are less fortunate. In a way I envy how you have taken it a step further with your family.

Ok, I think that may have caught me up with the thread.

We had a very low key day yestreday day. We saw an early showing of Bolt. And I loved it. Then walked DTD for a while. Had a delish late lunch at the Jazz Kitchen (will post pics later) and then headed back home. I jumped into my jammies and watched tv with my dogs. DD practiced the guitar for most of the rest of the day. We ended up going to bed pretty early too. It was wonderful.

Today we took another easy day. I caught up on a bit of homework and she kept up with the guitar. I came into work and DD went shopping with my mother.

Pretty boring tonight. I have had only two calls. And both were my brother. Its gonna be a long evening I can tell.

Did ya'll watch the parade? I loved the float where they did the Rick-Roll. :rotfl: That was funny.

I never watch the parade, and I found out about it on the CB here. I had never heard of RRing! I was really weirded out that I hadn't heard about it, too, b/c I like to think I'm up on all things internet. :rolleyes1

When I saw it on youtube, the look in his eyes told me that they totally did it on purpose, and knew it was a good joke. Loved that.

:rotfl: OMG! I wish I could have been there!!!! Cost Plus is giving out free monkey ornaments tomorrow, I got all excited when I saw the ad and my mom just shook her head like I have completely lost it. Nice to see others appreciating monkeys!

My son is loving monkeys right now, too! Specific monkeys. His height chart is one that sticks on the wall or a bookcase, and right now he's at the lion, which annoys him b/c lions eat meat and he doesn't. Though I'm quite sure that SOME monkeys eat meat, he figures they don't, so he wants to be at a monkey. Also, being at the next monkey means that he'd be around 47", which sounds like fun to him (though that would mean Indy, woudln't it? ack!). :)

Thanks for sharing your story Molly. I am also curious at Eamon's diet. I have severe allergies to foods when I was little, and often wonder if I'm missing anything with my children.

Lots of folks have told me this. I'm trying not to worry much, my boys seem very bright and happy to me. There was some research done on young boys that come from long lines of engineers, scientists, doctors, etc. The research is trying to prove that there is a correlation to these boys with more analytical minds and late speech. The theory goes that they are so busy analyzing everything and figuring out how things work, that they forget to learn to talk. They call it the 'Einstein Effect'. Being analytically minded, I find that kind of stuff interesting. :)

Eamon can't have anything related to corn syrup. No Uncrustables, no Dole Whips, very few ice creams, no mainstream chocolate sauces, no reddi whip type things...you can see why our trips to Disneyland involve so few snacks. :) We figured this out when he was...just beyond 3 years old when he attacked me not 20 minutes after having a DumDum lollipop. Disneyland with all of its foods has helped, though that sure hasn't been a pleasant learning experience! The other day he said to me, very seriously, that I needed to make SURE that I didn't feed him anything with "high fruit corn syrup" (high fructose corn syrup...by that he means anything related to it and of course HFCS itself) while we were at Disneyland, because he didn't want to get angry.

Looking at the bold in your other paragraph...my brother was indeed graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from Duke! OK so that's not an engineer really, but it's the same methodical thinking. Kid got straight As through high school, with the exception of a B in WoodShop which only happened b/c his best friend SAT on his final project before it was graded. Last 3 years of high school he was in countless AP classes and started Duke nearly a semester ahead b/c of the credits he earned with the AP tests. Was in AF ROTC there, and his training and knowledge and luck put him on a path that involved high security clearance and really unique knowledge and experiences. When he was done with his 4 years he had many private sector offers, and took one with Cisco in a department of something like 5 in the entire company with the clearance, experience, and brains to do what he does.

If it takes not talking for a couple/few years to get one of those, I'm cool with it, LOL.

Your wedding pictures are BEAUTIFUL, by the way. I like how you did your veil; I tried to do mine the same way but it was really wide and didn't "pleat" like that, so didn't fall just like that...then again it was chiffon with designs on it and wasn't as veil-like as yours either!

...drama with one of my nieces (she brought her boyfriend -- which was big surprise because last we heard she was a lesbian).

Oh I hate when that happens. :) My cousin did the same thing; I understand that some people have changing tastes (as opposed to people who have only one preference, like my BIL who has only ever really liked dudes), but can't they be a bit more talkative while those tastes are changing? Must we be surprised?

I love the new siggie emblems some of you ladies have.:lovestruc How can I get one?

The badge-looking ticker? Click on 'em and they take you to the website to make them! They are my fave ticker ever, I think. :)

All of my kids had huge language development explosions after visiting DLR as young toddlers. I say you're on to something there. :thumbsup2

You know, that's a good point.

The Blue's Clues effect had already taken place, but then we were at a still point. We moved, then had our second trip to San Diego, during which we had our second one-day Disneyland trip.

Then hubby was called back from CA to be with his father, who was hospitalized until he died the day after Thanksgiving that year. DS was pretty quiet that whole time, not totally understanding everything but doing his best. He would have been 2.5 years (on the day grandpa died) old.

He didn't talk about the trip when we got back, since we were consumed with visits and trying to get the nurses to figure out that I was indeed on "the list" of people to talk to etc etc.

Then in Jan or Feb, after FIL's Buddhist ceremony (done a certain number of days after death), and things got back to normal, without us spending every other day with MIL etc, he suddenly started TALKING. About everything, but especially the DIsneyland trip! He remembered stuff we hadn't, and talked about stuff we hadn't talked about. We rarely talked about it, since we were so busy. And I still am not up to that point in picture-printing, LOL. He remembered, and finally his brain realized he had the words, and BOOM another explosion of words.

We have always been very unconventional with Christmas. We have never taught our kids to believe in Santa Claus (other than the accurate, historical story of St. Nicholas). We didn't want to confuse our kids about the reason for the holiday which we believe is to celebrate the birth of Christ.

We're not Christian, but I'm with you on this. I never understood the Santa thing (nor was I taught it as anything but a fun myth) and how it went along with everything. And the further into realizing that I'm just not Christian, the further away from Santa I get (which sounds confusing, but since so many do put them together, we kind of have to move away from S as we move away from the 25th... Eamon likes the idea of Santa being there for Yule, but we have to do more thinking on that). We do open a few things on the 25th, if our Christian family and friends send Eamon presents, but we open our gifts to each other on Yule, without doing Santa as anything more than a fun thing that some people do.

We still have to figure out our traditions; right now it's more getting AWAY from things that don't mean anything, but we don't want to do that for much longer, we want to find things that DO have meaning, b/c we're starting to confuse Eamon. :headache:

Thanks for the recipe Beth, that looks really sweet, rich, and yummy! I might just try it for Christmas morning.

Callie, I didn't think you were nuts when I saw what you were doing for Christmas. I just got busy and forgot to comment on it. Christmas really is all about giving for me. I've cut way back this year on my giving, and it saddened me at first, but I must say, this is the most relaxed I've felt about the holiday season in years! We are not buying for extended family at all. I've turned down secret santas at work and with friends. We are just going to get together at a friends house this year and share our cooking and friendship. That's a great gift for me!

Stacie did you go to the Character Warehouse today? What did you get?

I hope that everyone who has to work has a great night. I have to work the weekend.

For those organizing the VIP tour...are you booking it at the 90 day mark? If so, who do I need to send money to? I'm trying to get my budget for December in order, and need to know what you all want! ;) I'm excited to do it! :woohoo:

Oh, and thanks again to Molly for sharing some of your story with us. I'm glad you figured out what was causing him such trouble. I'd like to think I would be that observant. :goodvibes

Thanks for your thoughts and support, Molly. I've heard you mention that you celebrate Yule on other threads. The only tie to Yule that I am aware of is through Wicca. Or is it connected to your Dh's Buddhist beliefs?

I find it interesting that we agree on so many different things (unconventional medicine as well as our love for Disney), yet obviously come from different spiritual belief systems.

Thanks to Stacie, Melody and Heather too for understanding my "Christmas consumer rebellion." :)

p.s. I was using my 23-year old (male) cousin's computer to log onto this website and MousePlanet yesterday and he was completely appalled--I'm sure he cleared his history after I left so none of his friends would think that HE was accessing Disney websites!!! LOL
:rotfl: That's funny. Enjoy your turkey. It sounds good.

No you didn't offend anyone, at least not me. I was curious about it, I just kept forgetting to ask. I think it's a great idea. But I think raising them that way from the start makes a huge difference. I'm not sure what my kids would think of it now.

I think I am done though. I always say that, and then keep buying here and there between now and Christmas. But this year, no more. I have what I have, it's more then enough, and I need to stop and just say I'm done. Period.

That does sound wonderful. I can't remember if I already posted this or not, but I told Ruben next year, we are taking a cue from you and going out to eat. No cooking, no clean up, no stress, no tempting left overs. One day, one meal, cooked and served by someone else. :thumbsup2 That's my plan next year.

We need to figure out our traditions as well. We always did the Santa thing but now that they are all older, I don't know. I just feel the need to make Christmas mean more somehow. Eh, who knows. I'm too tired to figure it all out now. LOL

I do know that I've always wanted to escape to the mountains and stay in some little cabin, far away from any mall and have an old fashioned Christmas where we make gifts and focus on family activites like baking, cooking, playing board games, being outdoors, etc.
But so far, it's never happened. Not sure if it ever will.

You are welcome for the recipe. I hope you like it if you try it.

I hate shopping for extended family. Every year it's the same deal. We can barely afford to buy for our own kids, and yet I have to go out and find gifts for MIL, FIL, BIL, his wife, SIL, etc.
They all have more money then us. I do not want to have to shop for them. No matter what I get they end up giving it away or letting it collect dust in a closet.

The VIP tour is being booked by Tracey (trodrigue) and she is booking it right on the 5th which is the 90 day mark if I recall correctly. I'm sure she'll contact those signed up before too long.

Speaking of the VIP tour, this is the final list I have as of now. I never did hear from Fairycat/Heather, so I had to remove her from the list. I sent two PMs. :confused3 Does anyone know if she is still planning on attending the trip at all?
Everyone else got back to me either to confirm or to ask to be removed. The tour is the same price no matter how many in the group, $750 for six hours. With 8 people signed up the cost will be $93.75 per person.

VIP Tour:
1. trodrigue/Tracey
2. Terri
3. toocherie/Cheryl
4. jordansmomma/Debra
5. cheshiregirl/Jane
6. LittleBlackRaincloud/Heather
7. audrabolster/Audra
8. Dylan
9.
10.

There are two spots left. If anyone is interested please let myself or Tracey/trodrigue know before 12/4, as it's getting booked on the 5th. Thanks!!

Stacie did you go to the Character Warehouse today? What did you get?

Yes, TOO MUCH!! I told Callie I spent about $200 and that was with my AMS discount card!! Guess I failed at Don't-Spend-Money-Today. Got some gifts for a niece and nephew, also a SIL and other niece, and my 2 DDs picked out some shirts, as did I, along with a few other little things. They had a sign up that said they would be getting a delivery from Disneyland on Thursday, Dec. 4. I will probably go check it out on Friday.

Thanks to Stacie, Melody and Heather too for understanding my "Christmas consumer rebellion." :)

I don't think it's rebellion, I completely agree with it! I wish I had started when my kids were younger so it wasn't so "cold turkey" for them. We did tell them that we were buying plane tickets to go see DH's family over Christmas, which they love since they have almost 50 first cousins (my DH is 1 of 17 kids), so they shouldn't expect much in the way of gifts.

...next year, we are taking a cue from you and going out to eat. No cooking, no clean up, no stress, no tempting left overs. One day, one meal, cooked and served by someone else. :thumbsup2 That's my plan next year.

My DH won't do that, he says he doesn't want to make someone else work... Yeah, right, someone else other than ME!!

It was totally no stress and I wasn't exhausted from cleaning, cooking, then cleaning up. We would do it again next year, but we are already planning on doing a cruise for that week instead.

Oooooh, a cruise. Wow, how nice.
I remember one year we went to Pismo Beach. It was no cruise, but it was so nice! Totally laid back, low key. We just hung out at the beach. No after Thanksgiving shopping madness. For our turkey dinner we went to Marie Calendar's right near our hotel. I loved it. :goodvibes

Callie!! Now you've got me thinking too much. I don't like to do that ya know. ;) I feel like I should go return some of the stuff I just bought! :rotfl2:

Seriously, I shop because I feel like I have to. :confused3 I do not really enjoy it. I usually get really nervous in the stores as the total gets higher and higher. I literally feel ill. I hate that feeling. No Christmas joy, that's for sure. This is why I have such a love/hate relationship with Christmas, and prefer Halloween. LOL

I love Christmas and the good feelings, time with family, etc. I hate the buy, buy, buy messages that I always get sucked into!! And the last minute rushing out because someone bought me an unexpected present and now I need one for them. Ugh. :headache:

I did give my credit cards to Ruben and said do NOT give them back no matter what!!! I guess that's a start. :rolleyes1

OK, I'll shut up now. :rotfl:

I just want to start getting into the holiday spirit. And nothing says holidays like a fragile leg lamp in the window.

SD09.jpg

Ok, I had Panda Express for dinner and just had my fortune cookie. It reads, "Use your natural talents to obtain more." So I'm wondering? Should I start buying more cleavage showing shirts? ;)

How about................... buying more blue "DIS Diva" shirts!! :rolleyes1

How about................... buying more blue "DIS Diva" shirts!! :rolleyes1

Now thats a great idea. If I could just find mine from last year, that could be a start. But that thing has gone MIA since I got back from last years trip. Strange. I remember taking it to the laundry room and all, but that was the last I saw of it. Maybe it shrunk so much it dissappeared?

Or I could start shopping in the juniors section. That will give the effect I'm looking for I think. :rotfl2:
