Does the money get collected before the order is placed or do you pay when the cookies are in hand?

Just a vent (not against the girl scout)....

A few weeks ago, my manger at the pizza place invited the GS troop come on a little field trip to the store. They were shown everything from taking an order, to making it, to dispatching a delivery. They were even given the opportunity to make up pizza boxes. (they thought that was really fun).

Everyone had fun and that was that. Then, my manager tells one of the dads that came along, that if he had an order form, to drop it off, anf she would get the workers to buy some cookies. He came by a couple days later with his little girl and dropped off the order form. When I saw it, I for one was excited. I have been waiting for the opportunity to get GS cookies, and I have not seen them selling them outside the supermarket. So, I was the 1st one to put my name down. I ordered 6 boxes.

The week before last, I happened to noticed the order form was still there. It was tucked behind the keyboard drivers use to dispatch their delivery. I pulled it out and noitced I was still the only name on the form, So I put it in the middle of the table...as a reminder to the manager that it was still there, and she did promise the little girl she would get orders for her. (we had the form now for about two weeks?)

So, last Saturday I happened to stop in because I order supper for the kids. I was told that their was a note for me from the manager. It said I owed the cash register $24. WHAT? So I asked why. The girl running the shift said that the manager paid the guy for my cookies out of the cash register. Ok, great..where are my cookies??? Oh, no cookies. The manager happened to come in to start her shift a few minutes later and told me the guy came by the night before, and he had to order some of the boxes. They would be delivered in a few days. I was still scratching my head as to why she would take money from the cash register to pay for my cookies. I had no cash on me so I told her I would pay the next day when I was working.

Of course, on Sundays I work with the owner. I came in and he said there was anote that I owed the register $24. Great. So I explained the whole story to him, and we both laughed (not funny ha-ha, but in frustration that the manager involved the store in this transaction) I joked with him all day about how he was responsible for paying for my cookies. He kept saying, "no problem, I got your back, I can take care of that for you." Meanwhile I still want to know where my cookies are. I paid him the $24 from my tip money. I wlaked out the door that day with $8 in my pocket. But someday I am going to have 6 boxes of GS cookies, right?

The manager came in for her shift that afternoon and said they would probably be delivered Monday. OK...

I forget about it until Wednesday..I call her and ask if the cookies were delivered. Nope. So now I want her to contact the guy. She doesn't have his number but can get it for me. FOR ME??? She is the one that volunteered to sell the cookies for the girl and did no such thing. She is the one that volunteered money out of the till with no cookies in hand......so I asked if she would call the guy. I don't know him from Adam. She doesn't sound like she wants to, but she said she would.

I haven't heard from her since then. I sent her a text message yesterday asking if she heard anything about my cookies and she did not reply. I am beyond frustrated right now. I ordered 6 boxes of cookies and thought I would pay when they were delivered. Now my money is out there to some guy and girl we don't know...I know it is a measely $24 but I want my cookies!!!!

So, after all this...do you collect money beforehand or on delivery? Also, any idea why it is taking so long for my cookies to be delivered?

Money is to be collected when the cookies are delivered, and not before.

The Dad did not need any money "to order the cookies." If he was worried about taking orders from a total stranger (which is what he was doing) he should have planned a date/time to come by with cookies and sell cookies to the employees on the spot. Collecting money in advance is against policy... and you can see why.

On the positive side, though, I don't think the cookies would have arrived yet, so there's still some hope he will deliver them.

How frustrating for you! I order GS cookies and pay for them when they are delivered.

The girl we are getting our cookies from this year has the cookies already and will drop them off when ever-vs ordering and waiting. Maybe this girl has the same set up? Maybe in the past the family has had issues with people ordering cookies and not having money to pay for them when they deliver so they are collecting money up front. When our kids do fundraisers I always collect up front, even if we don't "have" to. Too many times we have gotten stuck with stuff that people all of the sudden don't want.

Oh trust me, I am not worried at all about getting the cookies. We live in a small town, there is no way this guy would run off with $24. LOL.

My vent is why my manager would pay for my cookies out of the cash register when there were no cookies. Forcing me to pay up front because why should the owner be involved in this? If she paid out of her own pocket, I would have told her I will pay her when I have my cookies.

Former Cookie Mom here, current "meet the 2.5 semis of GS cookies for our Service Unit Mom" here.

Been very involved with the cookie process for several years.

IT IS NOT ALLOWED to collect the money before they are delivered. Is it more convenient - oh heck yes...but it is not proper. Do you know the name of the girl who the order was from? Do you know the troop number? I personally would call the counsel office and explain this to them. They will want to make this right.

NOW - FWIW - we had a girl scout in our subdivision who did this. (She was from a whole different county, she was the niece of one of our neighbors.) She did deliver all the cookies EXCEPT for one families. I actually acquired the 2 boxes, and paid for them myself and gave them to the shorted family. (they did not know who they ordered them from.) YES - it was out of MY POCKET. But I hate for any other GS to not have a great cookie season in our subdivision in future years. (And - the family I did this for sells Pampered Chef stuff, so they gave me a free mix of a coffee cake - so it turned out OK for me too!) So - know - the only scouts that people will buy from actually have to live in our subdivision.

OK - I've gone on a little too much!!! You "owe" the till???? That is Bull. THis was a transaction that didn't involve the restaurant...the boss shouldn't have done this.

Girl scouts does not require, or even encourage to collect the money up front.

I just ordered cookies from my niece in Jan and we do not pay until we get the cookies. My cookies should be here this week and I will give my sister the money for them.

As others as said, GS's are not supposed to collect the money when ordering because people do scam people over this as an FYI to all of you out there.

We had a girl in the neighborhood last yr who collected money at ordering time (DH did it) and as a former cookie manager he got an earful.:lmao:

I have been a cookie mom and leader for all 3 of my girls for the last 12 years. EVERY year we are told we are not to collect money till the cookies come in and EVERY year we see why. Calls come in to the council that they had a girl come selling cookies, they paid and never see the cookies. I don't think it is a HUGE problem, but it is ongoing, as I hear about them ever year.

Having said that, it happens every year, people will tell me they want to just pay for them now, and I take it, but we only sell to people we know so they know they are going to get their cookies. If I had to guess this dad wanted to ensure he was getting the money from someone cause he didn't know you, but in reality that is why it is best to stick with selling to people you have a connection to (unless it is a cookie booth of course.)

I'm a Troop Leader/Cookie Mom. I don't know how it works in other areas but we don't get our cookies until more than 4 weeks after we turn in our orders. I have to turn my forms in to the Service Unit tomorrow. Our cookies are due to be delivered on March 13. Then it takes it takes a couple of days for the parents to get come pick them up.

ETA

and my parents turned them in to me last week. So they're waiting 5 to 6 weeks for their cookies

No, you aren't supposed to pay for them in advance. From the time we drop off money to the time we get the cookies in hand to pass out is usually a couple weeks to a month.

You've already gotten a zillion "they aren't supposed to collect money up front" replies so I'll just add that it takes like a month to get the cookies.

I bet the guy took the cash at ordering because he was worried about non payment however if the GS just turned in the order form it'll be a few weeks for the cookies to come in.

OP you can do some sleuthing and find out when the delivery date of your cookies are if you want.

Google your city, town, etc and girl scout council. It will probably have a "cookie section" with a delivery date there somewhere.

It may not even be him that wants the money. My niece is a Brownie and her Troop Leaders ask for the money upfront. My sister didn't even know they weren't supposed to do that until I told her.

One of our neighbor's daughter was selling girl scout cookies in Januray. This year instead of taking orders as we have done in the past, she already had them on hand. No waiting for the cookies to come or going to deliver cookies to the person who ordered them. To me this is much easier not only on the Girl Scout girls but their parents as well. I remember one occasion that a Girl Scout Mom kept coming to work to collect money from a fellow coworker and she was never at our office when the Mom showed up.

That's because she decided to order a bunch of cases and then sell them around the neighborhood instead of taking orders. The same old still applies, orders/place order/cookies delivered/deliver cookies.

Unless you do it like I do, get the money and orders, then just deliver. I'm not playing anymore.

I have only been buying when they have a "booth" set up with the cookies there - that seems like the better idea to me - I hate kids doing the door to door sales

see, we were told we needed to pay for them in advance because the troop needed to pay for them before they got them.
