Ginger Snaps for Motion Sickness?

Can you get gingerale onboard? I tried Dramamine non-drowsy on my last cruise and it wiped me out. Looking for alternatives.

Yes, you can get ginger ale on board but you have to pay for it unless you have the soda package. I was using it during this past cruise (4/17 Eastern) because for 2 days we had 20 ft waves and gale force winds. I also didn't want to take the Bonine so I used sea bands and ginger ale. Alas, it didn't work. I definitely needed the Bonine. I did feel better everytime I drank a ginger ale though.

If you are near a Trader Joe's (and they are now across the country), they have a number of ginger items, including a triple ginger cookie with lots of real ginger in it...wow, are they good! Also real ginger ale. I would imagine most "natural foods" grocery stores and health food stores would carry ginger capsules and foods with real ginger.

Interesting about it not being recommended for m/s; I know quite a few people who have sworn by it, including some who live on Catalina Island and have had to cross regularly while suffering m/s. I guess like any other substance it has the potential not to be benign, and users (especially pg ones) should do their research before making a decision.

Ginger is also supposed to help with morning sickness, too..in case anybody is having issues there as well :)

I did the seabands on a 7-day--it seems I always get sick on the 3rd evening of a cruise--no problems on 3-days, but always on 4 or 7. Don't know what that is all about.

I used the seabands--and we called it an early night that night. Was fine the next day.

Be sure to check the ingredients. With some commercially available Ginger Snaps, it's hard to find any ginger on the ingredients list!

Try getting the ginger snaps at a health food store such as Whole foods or Wild Oats--

Alot of times, processed foods at the regular stores are articificially flavored--hence the lack of ginger on the ingrediants list.

You can get ginger capsules at walmart- in the vitamin section. My OB prescribed it for my horrific morning sickness. Sorry to tell you it did me no good at all.
Trader Joe's has Ginger beer and you can get the capsules there also.

Thanks to all for the interesting information.

I was going to research this summer the best precaution to take for my two children, my niece, nephew and myself.

I think the ginger capsules sounds like a great way to go.

PLEASE read this and talk to your doctor if you are thinking about taking ginger for morning sickness, or if you have gallstones, or if you're anticipating surgery.

Not recommended for morning sickness, especially if you have a history of bleeding disorders or miscarriage. May cause bleeding or impair fetal development. However, more conclusive data is needed. Small amounts of ginger used to flavor food are generally recognized as safe for pregnant women.
If you have gallstones, talk to your doctor before using. Ginger increases the production of digestive juices and bile.
If you're anticipating surgery, stop taking ginger 2 to 3 weeks before surgery. Ginger may increase your risk of bleeding if you take it regularly.
