Gift Ideas for a 10 year old boy?

I have a birthday party to attend this weekend and am at a loss as to what to get as a gift. The party is for a 10 year old boy. He loves sports and is generally very active. Are there any hot items out on the market that this age would like?

Gift card to Toy's R Us always works or, depending on budget, a game for his game-boy advance or gameboy SP if he has one. The newer games run from 20-40 bucks.

Do you know what sport he plays? New equipment (soccer balls, baseball bats etc.) might be nice. Or a gift card to a sporting goods store.

Kids that age love to pick out their own stuff. (at least my BF's neices and nephews do)

Agree with Esmerldax on the cash or gift card idea. That's the preference of my nephews. Video games are huge for boys of that age.

A friend gave our ds a subscription to "Dig" magazine ... he really likes it.

Another friend made up a gift bag - movie gc's, micro popcorn, movie candy.

My SS loves clothes-but you will have to know his size.

You could get him a new watch.

My son loves to draw, so books on how to draw certain cartoon characters are big on his list. He's also a GameBoy, PS2 nut, so games he doesn't already have would be great, as well as the "cheat" books for that game. Any DVDs coming out soon that he might be interested in?

If you don't know what the boy does/doesn't have, a gift card to places that sell those items would probably be best.

One gift we used to give is gc to movie rental store along with popcorn. My son always appreciated gift cards the most.

At that age, kids like to do what the "grown-ups" do...I agree with the gift cards...perhaps even a pre-loaded MC or AMEX type thing where he can spend it wherever he wants...don't know if they have a min. to put on there, however. But I would think any 10 year old would think that's cool!

A preloaded card does sound good, but set it to a level where he can start to learn about spending limits and budgeting.

My DD just had his 10th birthday. What he wanted were gift cards or cash. He asked for GC for Target, Blockbuster (video or game rentals), movies, bowling, and Toys r Us.

We've also done the movie gift package with popcorn, candy, soda and a Blockbuster gift card. Also GC's to Dick's Sporting Goods or Sports Authority since most of his friends also want to pick out their own bats, balls, etc.

Some of his friends like the collectible action figures if they're into baseball, basketball, NASCAR etc. Or baseball, football, Yu Gi Oh cards.

My DS (who just turned 10), and his friends absolutely love playing with their huge squirt guns.

They are also usually really cheap this time of year.

I have to tell you that at DS's last birthday (11th) -- he had 13 boys here and everyone brought giftcards or cash. After eating and swimming, DS goes can I open my gifts?? I kind of whispered - Honey you got all envelopes and gift cards. He very loudly - no c'mon Mom can I open my presents now? He was gracious about it, but he was a bit disappointed to get all giftcards, especially to places like Blockbuster and the movies where I would pay anyway. It was a pain for me too because I had to take him around shopping to 6 different stores and half the time I had to give him more money to get what he really wanted at each one. Just my thoughts on the money issue.

My son loves SuperSoakers at this time of year, any kind of sports thing - frisbee, football, basketball - the kind that light up are fun. Legos. DVD's. CD's.

If the boy loves Disney, you can get him a pair of walkie-talkies and/or a Guide to Hidden Mickeys in WDW (I'm not sure of the exact title on that, but it is in with the tour guides to WDW at Barnes and Noble), I got the guidebook for my 10 yr old nephew who's family is in DVC, and they go twice a year. My DSIL said he loved it, and can't wait to got looking for all the hidden Mickeys..And, of course, it got him reading.. I gave the walkie talkies to my 12 yr old nephew.. Disney Dollars are an option, too.

My DS 11 loves jerseys. The NFL or NBA ones will cost big, but Walmart has some decent ones for $10-20. If he still wears kids sizes, probably less.

YuGiOh has been the big hit at the last 2 birthday parties we went to for this age group. Same with my son and he just turned 10. He also says Star Wars items and video games. Sports has also been big.

Hi Chager! I'm in Columbus too and I was just going to post
that DS and his friends are finally over all the Yu-Gi Oh,
Pokemon type things. They have moved on to gift cards,
squirt guns, science and magic, cool books, balls of any kind(always getting leaks or cracks so never enough). CD's or
DVD's are good if you can get specific titles. Gameboy, Gamecube,
PSII always have some title on sale for anywhere from $8 to
$20. Ask the Mom or Dad.

Somehow I don't see YuGiOh going away for us for awhile. Nick and his friends all go to tournies at ToysRUs on Saturdays and Wednesdays. I just found out that Media Play may have them going on now too. Some of the kids were talking about going there for the afternoon games last Saturday Nick has to buy his with money he earns or gets for gifts. He currently carries his cards in a locked briefcase I always feel like I should have a handcuff chaining me to it at the games You are sooo lucky to be done with it.
