Gift cards, Disney rewards and room charging

I had not idea what to title this or where to even post but I am hoping someone can give me some suggestions.

Last year when we went to Disney I used my Disney Visa rewards card to purchase all the small things in the parks instead of charging to the room. This made things really easy for us, since it gave a balance and allowed us not to carry cash.

Well, we are going again soon and have not racked up a ton of points on the Visa, so we are not cashing any of them out. We are also sharing our room with another couple so we are putting the "no charging" on the room keys to avoid any confusion.

So here is the question, is it at all possible to do something like the disney visa rewards card? You get the idea, something that allows me not to carry cash. Would a disney gift card do this? And if so, where do I purchase one? How long are they good for? Any fees or charges if it is inactive for a period of time?

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have. :goodvibes

I bought my disney gift card at the disneyland.com site. They had more choices for the picture on the front than the disneyworld.com site. I had to search for gift cards in the "search" box to find them though and they were good at every place in Disney World that accepted the KTTW cards or credit cards. As long as they had the card swipers they accepted the gift cards. And you could pay off your room balance with it as well if you had any left on the card, even just a couple of dollars could be put toward your room just to use it up. You can also recharge them at any shop. I bought several smaller denominations and kept a couple in the room safe just in case I lost one (didn't happen though). Even the kiosks take them. I really like this way of purchasing food and snacks since we were not on the DDP and if we ever get to go again, I will be buying gift cards. The receipt shows the balance of GC as well so you know where you stand.

You could also get prepaid visa/ american express cards too. I like to take them for traveling in smaller denominations like the pp too. But with visa cards you can use them anywhere - airport etc. as well as in the parks.

Not to hi-jack the thread or anything...but...can you use a Disney Gift card to buy food? Will they take them at CS and TS resturants or just a snack stand?

I used them at CS and a couple of TS places. I ate mostly CS and they all took the gift card and TS places did too. As long as they are Disney operated they will accept the Disney gift card. I'm not sure about the restaurants at the Swan/Dolfin as I have never stayed or ate there (are those Disney operated?).

Disney gift cards will work at most food locations in the parks - one exception I know of is the Joffey (sp?) coffee carts which do not take DDP either. Unfortunately it's one of the few places at WDW to get really GOOD coffee.

We used ours for food in December at various CS and TS locations in the parks. Not 100% sure about DTD. I know some will accept them, but some of the "independently" owned/operation places may not. If in doubt, just ask first.
