Lurker here - long time ghost fan![]()
I spent the night at Waverly Hills Sanatorium in April. It wasn't my first time there but it was my first overnight. I had been about 5 years ago on a "paranormal tour" - this was before a lot of the renovation had taken place and before a lot of interest had been generated (outside of the Louisville area, anyway) in the place.
Turns out that the tour was a bit more "interesting" than the overnight. Maybe because the overnight included about FIFTY PEOPLEI didn't see a ghost but I saw lots and lots of peeps (and yeah - some of them were scary!)
We saw a "shadow person" on the tour and I swear a brick slid across the floor. I walked by, saw the brick - heard a noise, took a few steps back and the brick was moved. And yes -the noise sounded just like a brick sliding across the floor.
But on the overnight the most frightening thing that happened was that I fell asleep in an empty and pitch-black hallway and woke up a wee bit disoriented. It was actually quite funny in retrospect - leave it to me to catch some zzz's in one of the most haunted places in America! My DH was a bit frantic looking for me and I honestly meant to just have a sit for a bit. I guess the spirits were kind and let me take my nap in peace.![]()
When I was younger I was lucky enough to live in an amazing house that happened to be haunted. I have some fun stories that I'll share sometime![]()
OKay so now that you told us you have stories......you HAVE to tell them we are starved for good real life paranormal. Can you enlighten us on the Shadow Person. We were discussing that a few days ago.
Ok - ya'll pulled it out of me
About the "shadow people" - Waverly Hills is notorious for having them. If you saw any of the GH episodes at Waverly, the "shadow people" are very often discussed.
What we saw the night of the tour was odd. I was 99% sure it was an optical illusion .. up until the very last moment.
The structure itself is long and narrow - long hallways with rooms on either sides. One side of the building also has many windows on most floors; it's said that the patients were wheeled out onto the open areas as a part of their treatment for TB (even with snow sometimes falling on their feet).
Anyway - if you stand at the end of one of these hallways, you can very often see a dark form "breaking the light," as if something is crossing the hallway in front of you. You have to look closely and your eyes have to adjust to the darkness in order to see this. There was a group of about 20 of us all standing in this hallway and, after a few moments, you started to hear people saying, "OH! Did you see that??" and other exclamations of surprise.
So, I'm standing there and I start to see what they're talking about. But I'm thinking to myself that if you stare at something long enough, your eyes start to play wonky tricks on you. So I was pretty dismissive.
We watched "it" for a long time and then it seemed to become a bit more clear. It really looked like a human form walking from one doorway at the end of the hallway to another. We were all pretty engaged and the group became extremely quiet.
So we watch it walk across the hallway and then we don't see it again for a bit. So the crowd started whispering a bit and we thought it was gone.
Except -
The shadow "peeked" around the corner. We all saw it - it was extremely clear. It had been moving back and forth and was still a bit "questionable" as to if it was a trick of the light. But to see a head peek around the corner and look at you - WOW. It freaked the entire crowd out! Some people started screaming and everyone ran the other direction. Lucky me, I was at the back and took the brunt of the impact.![]()
So that's my experience with shadow people. I've not seen one before (not that I remember) and I've never seen once since. I really thought that I would see it again on the overnight I spent there but no chance. We saw and experienced absolutely nothing.
But I bet on a quiet night, without a lot of people around, you can see them there. On the "tour" I took (the night I saw "him"), I actually felt scared to be there. I don't scare easily and I never have been afraid of "ghosts." But there was something in the air - something frightening. I stayed close to the group.
The night I stayed there it felt just like any other place in the world. No scarier than my kitchen. I often wandered off by myself and didn't get the "heebie jeebies" at all.
I guess even spirits have "off" nights![]()
I'll come back and share my personal ghost experiences from when I was young. It'll be nice to share them with people who actually find them interesting![]()
Hello Everyone!![]()
I was hoping to get some words of advice from people who have done some ghost hunting. DH and I are purchasing a voice recorder and are heading out with our digital camera to a local cemetary to do some first time ghost hunting.
We would like any advice you have for first timers doing this type of thing.
Thanks!
Ooops! I forgot to add that I give WDWBarb's story 7 ghosts!

LOL - ya'll make me laugh!! I would love to go to Waverly with this group. What a fun trip that would be!
Ok, I'll start at the beginning! I'll type as much as I can before my fingers give out.![]()
When I was growing up, my parents and my grandparents always thought me a bit... I can't really think of a good word for it.... "creepy?" That's the best I can describe it. I always told them I saw things and I had dreams that, with some eerie detail, came true. Mom always said I was more like a grown-up than a kid and I would always prefer to spend time with animals than people (and I swore that I could understand them). I also remember being homesick for most of my childhood. Like, really, really homesick. I missed something badly and I would cry and say that I wanted to go home and that I missed my mom. It hurt so bad that I actually still remember the pain of this heartache.
Problem was, I was telling this to my mom... at home.
That's all kind of a side note - more of a "setting the stage."![]()
Anyway, when I was a preschooler, my parents were in real estate and purchased a home that was an absolute STEAL. They couldn't believe their luck and the incredible price. The home was built in the late 1800's and it was gigantic. It was also immaculate and in beautiful shape. It sat on about 15 gorgeous acres. How could they not buy it? They asked the owners why they wanted to sell and they said that they wanted to move closer to the city (it was a small town about 20 miles outside of the "city") and ("oh, by the way") - it's haunted.
My parents just laughed. If someone was silly enough to believe that, they'd just snap it up and take advantage of that situation. Regardless of the fact that no one else had dared buy the house (it had been on the market for a long, long time), they were thrilled.
Mom didn't say anything about that to me and my brother. I just remember driving up the long driveway, under the canopy of trees, seeing my new home for the first time. I was thrilled beyond belief. I was a princess and I had a real castle.
The previous owners told my parents a few stories about their experiences there. I'll start with my favorite -
They had 8 children, one of which suffered from extreme asthma. This was back in the early 70's and there wasn't much they could do for their son. But the house was suited to this large family - it was just huge.
The house had a very basic kitchen, designed for the cooking to be done by a maid. The kitchen had a "maid's staircase" from the kitchen/utility area up to the maid's quarters. There was room for a table but a very formal dining area where the meals were meant to be served.
Hanging on the kitchen wall was a box that was covered with buttons. Looking at it, you couldn't really tell what it was. The buttons were numbered 1-21. It was obviously pretty old. It just hung there. Pushing on the buttons did nothing.
But in each room of the house, there was also just a button. Button didn't do anything either. Apparently this was a very primative "paging" device to call the maid to you. Of couse, it wasn't as old as the house, but it certainly was ancient in it's own right.
Back to the story -
The whole family was sitting around the kitchen table one summer evening, laughing and joking. The son with asthma wasn't feeling well and had retired to bed early.
And then the buttons on wall in the kitchen all lit up and made a loud buzzing noise.
Scared the heck out of everyone. They were so startled and sat there puzzling over it when one of them suddenly thought about the son upstairs.
The parents ran upstairs and found their son in the middle of a severe asthma attack. He had crawled from the bed to the floor and was struggling the breathe.
At the hospital, when he was recovering, they recounted how smart it was for him to push the button on the wall, and how incredibly strange it was that the thing just suddenly started working.
Of course, you may see this coming... but he said, "what button?"
The family wasn't fearful of their "ghost" but had to admit that they felt unsettled there. They had a few other, less interesting experiences but did tell us that they'd miss "her."
I got to know her over time. And I still miss her.

Great stories.....may we have some more please? (said in my best "oliver" impression)
Hey, where the heck has ward been lately - she talks about a ghost town - and she's the biggest ghost (yes ward, I'm talkin' 'bout ya!)
