Getting to and from Catholic church?

My mom needs to attend mass when we are there in September. How should she get there (Mary Queen of the Universe)? If she takes a cab, does anyone know how far it is and approximately how much it would cost? Thanks!

We have found the best way to get to the shrine is to hail a cab at DTD. The ride over to the church is short - about 5 minutes or so depending on traffic. The fare is between $7-$10 and you can ask the driver to pick you up after the Mass. Choose a time and he/she will meet you after the Mass. Bring your cellphone if possible just in case. Please note that the Mass has been known to last longer than a "normal" Sunday Mass, particularly the Mass on Saturday evening.

Thanks so much! Any idea how much it would cost/how long it would take from POP (she'd probably go Sunday morning, so straight from hotel)? Thanks!

Which Sunday in September does she need? We'll be going 9/6 and would be happy to take her with us.

PM me if you are interested.

Oh, thanks SOOO much for the offer, but it's the 13th that she'll need. You are so sweet to offer!

I estimated her fare on the Mears/Yellow Cab website to be $15.42; distance is 6.3 miles (this, of course, excludes tip and is just an estimate) one way. Traffic should be pretty light on a Sunday morning. She could easily hail a cab from the hotel - ask a cast member - or book ahead of time.

Please remember she will find a cellphone to come in handy. In our experiences, the shrine pay phones are often out of order and the clerks in the gift shop are, I guess, prohibited from letting guests use theirs.

I think it was about $25 from the Dolphin. Last year we went to DTD afterwards for dinner and it was cheaper. That's our plan this year too - Saturday evening mass at 6pm and dinner reservations at 8pm. ;)

If you are staying at Pop she may be better off going to the Catholic church in Celebration. It is held at Celebration High School (1809 Celebration Blvd) on Sunday mornings at 8 & 10.

Their web address is celebrationcatholic.org

Just a little update for you -
Last evening we went to Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine for Saturday 6pm mass....

Since we have my parents with us, we had to take a van instead of the usual taxi. I had the conceirge make the arrangements for us.
Mears Luxury Van picked us up at 5:15pm at the Dolphin - $21 to the shrine.
We had dinner reservations in Downtown Disney after mass, so they returned at 7:20 and since it is closer it was $13.

No meter running, Mears quoted these prices up front when we made the reservations. Both drivers were very nice - the first one gave us his number in case we ran into trouble finding the return van. The second one gave us his card for future trips. (I think we tip too high. :lmao:)

PS: If you are reserving a return ride, as opposed to just catching a taxi in the lineup, be aware that mass runs longer than at home...around 1 hour 15 min. ;)

We went to the Celebration Mass at the high school in May. They are building a new church in Celebration, not sure when the finish date was.

We really enjoyed our trip over to Celebration Sunday morning with breakfast at the Market Street Cafe after Mass.

Can't help out the OP, but I'll be going to mass on Saturday, Oct 3 at 6:00pm.
I'll need to go from POP or DTD by Taxi or whatever, so if anyone wants to share a ride, let me know and we can split the cost.:goodvibes

Thanks for this info :) i was looking for just this!!

Why is mass longer?? any particular reason (other than it's probably very crowded??)

Mass is longer because the priest gives a little introduction at the beginning of mass - explaining the history of the shrine, asking where people are from, and has everyone say hello to the person next to them. Communion takes a while because the place is SO big.

So, mass ends up being around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Add more time to your travel plans if you want to take time to explore the grounds or visit the gift shop. You really could spend an hour just looking around! Pretty place.

Thanks for the info!!! It should be fun going there. I know..I know..there really are a few of us who do enjoy going to mass on vacation. As I tell my kids - we've got 2 glorious weeks to visit mickey. Is it really such a bother to spend 2 hours thanking God for our abundance and blessings??

I agree! :thumbsup2

You'll love the shrine - so pretty! When I get home I will try to post some photos on this thread.

We really enjoy visiting different churches in different areas when we travel. We have met such nice people! We couldn't find a taxi to return to our hotel in Bermuda and a parishioner gave us a ride home!

We've been to huge catherdrals, tiny little country churches, small hometown parishes, busy city churches. All lovely experiences!! :cutie:

My wife and I have attended 9:30am mass at Mary, Queen of the Universe the last two trips we have gone. We take a cab, once from Coronado Springs, the other time from the Polynesian. Give yourself a hour to travel to the church. The cab ride was actually 30 minutes but we like to give ourselves some time to get settled in before the mass starts. It cost us approximately $25 each way.

We've taken cabs to the Shrine from several resorts and Pop is always the least expensive - about $15-18 each way. There are always cabs out in front already, so you won't have to wait. You can ask the same person to return for you, but on several occasions, have had to call for another cab.
