My dad smokes. He has this recliner that he is getting rid of and offered it to my husband. Problem is has a very potent smoke smell.

Is that possible to get out? Will it just disappear w/ time?

Thanks

What type of fabric is it? If it's leather, it could be tough. If it's something else, you may be able to spray it with Febreeze, which will help, but probably won't remove all odor for a very long time. I would think you'd need to spary it regularly.

As for "time", that's not likely to work on its own as the smoke is pretty much buried in every pore.

It will lessen and you can help that with some cleaning methods, but a sensitive nose will probably always be able to smell something.

Is the recliner upholstered or leather?

My grandparents gave us a leather sofa they didn't use anymore...we couldnt' use it because nothing we did could get the smell of smoke out of it.

I am very sensitive to smoke smell, and every cover-up spray in the world wouldn't take away the smell. It would only cover it up, then after the spray evaporates, the smoke smell is still there.

I would take it outside or in the garage and let it air out outside for a few days.

My mom is a very heavy smoker, and gave us her cloth sofa when we first got married.

I am fortunate in that I have a deck behind my house, and I was able to keep the sofa on the deck for a few days to let the fresh air tackle it. The air, along with daily doses of Febreeze & Lysol, did get the odor out eventually.

Another tip I can give you (after having a skunk issue in my house) is to use Downy fabric softener sheets between the cushions. And I mean LOTS of them. They will help too!

it is upholstery. That's a bummer if I can't get it out. I grew up w/ my father smoking so I don't think it will be a problem for me. But I don't know about DH

My parents both smoke (although hopefully after Mom's hospital stay last week, that is over) and every time I go to their house, I leave smelling like an ashtray. It makes me sick. My clothes, hair, everything. I refuse to wear my suede coat when I visit them because I don't want that to smell and I'm afraid nothing I try to do will help.

But, I do Febreeze anything else I wear as soon as I get home and it really does get rid of the odor. On some items (jackets/coats), I need to spray it a few times, but it does get the smell out. Hopefully this will work on the chair. As I said (and I think others reiterated), it will probably take many, many treatments to get the smell out to the point that it is not bothersome.

I have used a rug steam cleaner to clean upholstered furniture that had been peed on and it got the smell out. Try something like that, with a good strong cleaner and maybe even adding some kind of odor eliminator, let it dry well, works even better if you can get it outside on nice sunny days.

I'm not sure if this works. But I heard once that if you draped an item that has a smoke smell with newspapers the odor will be sort of sucked out through the newspaper.

I have an old upholstered couch in my bonus room that smelled dusty and needed help. I soaked it with Febreze and let it dry out. Then I took my little steam cleaning (Shark) machine to it thoroughly and it helped a LOT.

Good luck.....:thumbsup2
