Getting sick during vacation.

Just wondering if this is more common than I think. Anyone ever get sick during their trip, enough for it to ruin their vacation? If so, did you do anything different on your next visit to try and prevent it? (taking Airborne, etc.)

We flew down last Wednesday, I got in 3 good days (Wed, Thurs, Fri) before I started feeling really sick, sore throat, coughing, fever, chills. I was sick enough to be down and out for the rest of our vacation, mostly couchbound. It really bums me out that I never even made it to MK.   We even extended our flight 1 day because I felt too sick to fly back home. When we went in April, DH got really sick too with the same type thing.

I know it probably can't be prevented, you get exposed to germs on closed airplanes, at the parks, the hotels, etc. Just wondering if anyone has had this happen enough that they now have things they do to "prep" for their trip?

Ive been taking airborne for the last couple of days to prepare for our trip on Monday...I will be taking it the day we leave/arrive but not during out stay. When we check in to the hotel I quickly wipe down the room with disinfecting wipes in hope to kill all germs the mouse keepers didn't.

I got sick on our first trip to WDW a year ago. Luckily it was towards the end of our 11 day vacation, but it was kind of awful. All the things we planned to do in the last 2 days were shot, and since it was our first trip ever to WDW I felt really bad for my husband since I didn't feel good enough to leave the room. Since then there's a few things I live by when taking a trip:
1. I make sure I am eating probiotic yogurt at least 1 week before I fly and I order some to have while at WDW. It helps keep your immune system up.
2. When waiting in lines for rides I make sure not to touch any surfaces such as handrails (unless I absolutely have to); lots of germies on those things!
3. I don't touch my nose, mouth, or eyes unless I wash my hands or scrub down with one of those antibacterial wipes.
4. We don't eat anything with our hands until after we wash our hands or scrub down with antibac wipes.
5. I also bring Clorox wipes to wipe down the remote control, telephone, and door handles in our room.

I find that this has worked well since we have not gotten ill on our subsequent trips.

A few years back I spent a 10 days of a 12 day WDW vacation flat on my back sick as a dog at the CSR. Since then, we bring bleach wipes to wipe the doorknobs, remotes, phone, faucets and flusher in the room. We bring small bottles of hand sanitizer and don't eat with our hands until after we've used it. We take airborne the week before travel and one each morning during our stay. I try to get my flu shot before going and we bring Zicam with us and use it as soon as we feel the slightest sniffle. We drink lots of bottled water. My Nurse Practitioner recommended that I put Neosporene around my nostrils when I fly as an extra , I haven't tried it yet. There's nothing worse than being sick on vacation. We try to be overly cautious because WDW vacations are too expensive to be sick during. Some people may think overkill but I think not. :hippie:

Exactly what I was going to say! Airborne is amazing (now they have the generic brands in just about every store), combined with rest, and frequently washing your hands is as good as you can do. Lots of water, a balanced diet and rest is what our bodies naturally need to fight sickness. Combined with Airborne and extra precautions to stay clean, you'll do great!

Have fun!

I've been face down in the lobby of BCV wearing a hooded sweatshirt and shivering while my children were "catching their last rays" before heading to the airport for our return trip home. I wondered where the magic was at that point... I also wondered if I would evoke pity from the concierge if I managed to drag my pale, clammy, nauseaus body to the concierge. (still managed to check out of DVC on time though...uhh...wrong post).
Lesson learned that trip - don't plant your face in airplane pillows/blankets, no matter how tired you are, on your way to vacation.

New sites found this last trip to Orlando...specifically, the nearby Centre Medical as well as Celebration Hospital. Souveigners from the trip included CT Scan Reports and Lab Work. Additionally, Disney has a cracker jack network for emergency dental care. (Apparantly, a cracked tooth and menigitis have similiar presentations). Lesson learned that trip - schedule routine dental care prior to your vacation.

I hate to think what else I'm going to learn on these vacations...

dumb question here, but what is Airbourne? I am from Canada and have never heard of this? Also, what is the generic brand name? Where can you buy these from, as i am planning a shopping trip to USA and would like to get something as a backup. My DD3 at the time was sick the entire last trip and missed out on so much. I really want to have everyone try and take something to help fight off any little bit helps.

Not a dumb question at all! Airborne is a supplement invented by a school teacher who was tired of getting so sick every year from her students. I am no expert on it, but I believe there is no actual medication in it; It is just vitamins. You stick a tablet in water or whatever you're drinking and it dissolves. You take it before traveling, or immediatly upon feeling sick. I worked in classroom for three years and I was only sick once!

Target and Sav-On make generic brands for sure. I'm sure other drug stores do as well. Just ask a clerk.

Wow, thanks, Does it alter the taste of drinks? How often do you need to take them, daily etc? Also how much would do they cost.

Yes it alters the taste. That's why we just use water. They come in Lemon/Lime flavor and I think a berry flavor now. I think they taste pretty sick, but it's worth it. You take it every couple of hours, but I think the Airborne is expensive, so buy the generic if you can find it :)

You can buy it online here for 30% off the normal price and save yourself a trip to the store:

I just purchased some yesterday. A little late for my current illness, which is still hanging on by the way, but at least I'll have it for the upcoming cold season. It was shelf marked $7.99, but was on sale at Rite-Aid for $5.99. They do have a website you can go to for more information.

DH got sick on our last trip, towards the end, and subsequently, I got sick when we got home...no fun and we missed Illuminations because he wasn't feeling up to it.

Next time, we will take Airborne a week before and the week we are there. I'm also going to be dilligent about using the antibacterial hand gel, and I'll bring antibacterial wipes for the remote, phone, and door knobs in our room.

I have been making sure I am taking my vitamins and drinking my danactive for the last few weeks in order to be ready for my trip next week. I also have a small bottle of purell to put in my fanny pack, and one for my quart bag carryon to use on the airplane. Those trays and that bathroom are covered in nasty stuff! I am also trying to cut back on the pop and drink more water.

I worried about this before our last months trip but I used extra
caution in washing my hands often, not touching my face.
I mostly worried about eating at buffets and picking up something
because everyone touchs the serving utensils.
I also encouraged my DS to also use caution and our whole
family were healthy the whole trip.
Have a Healthy and Fun Trip! :thumbsup2

I always take a can of Lysol for the room. Instead of wiping things down, I usually just spray them --- including shower, toliet, handles....

I'm one of those people who almost always gets sick on vacation. Last April everyone except DH got a stomach bug. DS got it 2 days before we were coming home but was better the next day. I got it the day we were leaving to come home. Luckily it subsided by the time we were leaving for the airport but all I wanted to do was sleep.

Then this past July we went to California. We spent 2 days in DL (I was fine). Then we took the train to MIL's house and I started getting a sore throat. The rest of the trip my nose was stuffed and I was coughing. When I got home I went to the MD and they said I had sinusitis.

This coming April I am planning on taking airborne and I got some stuff from Magellan's Travel which is supposed to prevent strep and sinus problems and some moisturizing nasal spray for the plane. Hopefully I can get through this trip intact.

Great post! DH loves airbourne. We actually have the little packets for bottles of water... i'll have to make sure to pack that! Also, love the idea of the wipes! Not to mention the post of not using the airline blankets and pillows...

ok so I need to remember: bring along medicine.... all kinds of medicine

Yup, Im a sicko too! I am in Canada, so we don't have the Airborn I hear so much about. I am thinking about ordering it online because I am so desparate to NOT get sick this vacation! I have tried the Cold FX here in Canada, but it doesnt help me at all. Where could I order Airborn online that delivers to Canada?

Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking about keeping everyone healthy for our upcoming trip in December. My kids are in pre-school - they go Tuesday and Thursday. I am keeping them out of school the Thursday before we leave. We leave on Monday morning. Just in case they catch something - they'll have a couple of days to get rid of it.

Thanks for the reminder on Airborne. I have to pick up some at Sam's Club next time I'm there. It is cheaper there.

Pretty sure I have seen airborne in walmart pharmacy section in ontario. Where are you from??:confused3
I am also going to start taking some airborne next week as well as packing clorox wipes & purrell. I got the respiratory flu with DS and we were in bed with a fever, chills, etc for 3 days!!! YUCK!! It was depressing and then I was tired the rest of the trip. I never thought I would have time to read a book while on vacation in disney. Lucky I brought it for the plane.

Definitely going to try to stay germ and virus free this trip!!! 16 days to go!! WOOHOO!!!!!!
