Getting sick during vacation.

I agree about the can of lysol 100%. Interestingly enough, clorox or lysol wipes do not kill the type of germs that are most likely gonna make you sick while on vacation. The wipes are great for food borne stuff, but will miss the flu, rota virus etc. All 3 of our kids were sick on our last trip a month ago. Really high fevers, etc. We ended up flying home 2 days early to end our misery of being stuck in a hotel room because the baby felt better at when the 2 older kids were sick, and he reallydidn't think he had any business being in the room all day. Needless to say, our trip was not our dream trip we had hoped for:guilty:

I sanitize the room (door handles, knobs, restroom, phone, remote) the best that we can, we always bring our own pillows, and never use the comforter. Other than that, we just hope for the best!

I haven't seen Airborne in Ontarip(but i never bothered to look as i thought it was only available in USA ;) But i did hear they have Airbourne for kids. does anyone know if it works the same as for adults. My DD's have a hard time with anything like this, so i wonder what the kids stuff taste like. anyone have kids that can comment?

Yup, Im a sicko too! I am in Canada, so we don't have the Airborn I hear so much about. I am thinking about ordering it online because I am so desparate to NOT get sick this vacation! I have tried the Cold FX here in Canada, but it doesnt help me at all. Where could I order Airborn online that delivers to Canada?

I just ordered some from a guy on e-bay. He is shipping some rush to me. Everyone around us is sick, and we leave in 11 days. I want to keep my kids healthy.

I've gotten sick twice after Disney vacations-I caught chicken pox on my first trip, and a nasty tummy bug on my trip to DLR in 2005. I took Airborne on my trip in 06 and did not get sick.

I got sick for a few days on my first trip to wdw in '06. I wasn't sick enough to ruin the trip but since I was the one who planned the whole thing and was in control of everything the fact that I didn't feel good and was cranky was not fun for my family.
Before that trip I did take some airbore but only for tghe flight itself. The next trip I took airborne for a month or so before the trip.

How is everyone using airborne for Preventative? Do you take it during your vacation time or a couple of weeks before? Does it only come in powder to add to water or can you get it in tablets? My DD4 was sick during our last trip and missed everything except 1 day, so i really don't want to see her go through that again...

Do you all have your kids take the airborne too? my kids will not drink it.
i am going to get some sambucol elderberry liquid to start boosting our immune systems. that is hard enough to get into them but its a small amount like a tsp so i can manage......... i think i will get the danactiv drinks, they will drink those, i got some chewable probiotics for them but they refuse them. uggh.
so much to think about.

I really need to try and boost the kids immune systems this time. what have you tried for kids with success? What flavor Ariborne for kids did your kids try and not like?

I don't know how I am going to bring wipes and spays, we are only doing carry on bags on this trip.
the wipes may not be a problem but i suspect i will have trouble finding 3oz size of clorox spray.

We take airborne but DD hates the taste, it is like pulling teeth. She had a tiny sniffle before we left in spite of the airborne. (Some kids were outa school sick so I like to think the airborne helped alittle) By the end of the trip she was not feeling too hot, I spent $6.53 for childrens Motrian at Everything Pop. I made her take that and in an hour she was better than new, she was bouncing off the walls! (We now call it kiddy crack, I dont know whats in it but wow!) She drank her airborne that night and was good as new the next day.

WE also do some serious handwashing and following up with Purell at WDW, DD touches so much stuff and I can only imagine the germs.

My 2 cents - My DS got REALLY sick at the MK (fever, wheezing, passing out). We went to first aid at MK and they took care of calling the ambulance, my insurance etc. We went directly to the hospital and were seem immediately (special Disney connections perhaps??). Disney arranged for our cab back to the resort, the deliver of our meds and the fridge to put them in. We ended up hardley missing a beat of our vacation.

Someone ALWAYS gets sick on our vacations to Disney. Usually it is just an ear infection, or a cold, but the last time we went... oh what a treat! My DD starting throwing up 2 hours before the limo was coming to take us to the airport. I gave my DH that "we are soooo not going" look and he gathered up a bucket and a bunch of towels and basically dragged us into the limo. Mercifully, we did not have to use the towels or bucket. My DD slept on top of my husband, basically the whole way to Florida and was fine by that night (in fact, we have pictures of her eating ice cream and dancing in the streets at MGM to prove it - she is a pretty tough kid). The rest of us were not so lucky. It went through a good number of my family members. I got hit pretty hard (and at 7 months pregnant I expected some, SOME sympathy from my OB but I got nothing. They just asked my husband... "is she having contractions, no?, okay then tell her to drink water and have a nice day". Anyway, having been sick at Disney so many times I will say that it isn't such a bad place to be sick. Granted, I would rather not be sick on vacation, and we wound up missing a few ADRs, but there were some benefits to being sick in Disney vs. at my own home:

1) Urgent care comes to pick you up and takes you back to your resort.

2) The pharmacy delivers

3) A pharmacy drop off guarantees a refrigerator in your room if you don't already have one

4) Need a sheet change at 2:00 in the morning? Didn't quite make it to the bathroom? Not to worry. Just sit back, relax, and dial housekeeping (just tip well!)

At least in my home, none of the above take place when you are sick. I actually got to just be sick for once, instead of having to take care of everyone and "suck it up".

Now I realize there are going to be those of you who are all upset that we took my sick daughter on the plane (anybody get the flu at Disney in December 2005? You have us to thank!) but the deed is done and there is nothing I can do about it now, so feel free to let fly your arrows, I will not engage.

ick.
I can't stand the taste of Airborne.
I took it alot during swim season so i wouldn't get sick, but it would take me about 30 minutes to down a glass.
I don't blame your kids.

but it definitely is a good idea to start taking it before your vacations.

Last trip, 2 of my 3 children ran high fevers for 3 days each and broke out into a rash (which was just a symptom of the viral infection they had). We went to two different pediatric services, thank goodness we drove! Anyway we will be leaving for a cruise at the end of the week and I've been making sure that my kids have been sleeping and taking their vitamins, but my one DD is now starting with a raspy cough! :sad2: And I actually did buy Airborne yesterday (even though I always swore I wouldn't - because its just vitamins and minerals and a good diet should take care of that) - But now I'm eating those words :scared: - I figure it can't hurt!

OMG- Last year, there were 11 of us going to WDW, for our annual trip, and all of us ended up with a stomach bug at some point.
It was HORRIBLE. For 3 days me, my 6yr old dd , and my MIL were ALL sick as dogs in our hotel room (thank God for a waterview YC room!) - I felt bad, my dh and my sis in laws kids had to fly home, sick. The three of us were booked 3 extra days (for MVMCP) so we at least could stay sick -- i couldn't have even thought about having to fly home like that! It was HORRIBLE.. (didn't i say that? ;) ) All three of us in the room with a stomach bug, and one bathroom...none of us were even well enough to make it down the hall to the concierge bathroom! LOL
So, b/w everyone being sick last year, we really lost 5-6 days of our trip. :(
This year, i am DETERMINED not to get sick!!! Aside from bringing face masks for the plane (which is truly where i feel we picked it up last year!) i am bringing hand sanitizer, wipes .. etc. Oh, and i am definately starting Airborne before we go -- and keeping up with lots of water and vit.C. Hopefully dd can deal with the taste of AB enough to chug down some for a week before we go.. Which is coming up!!

BTW, i was reading an article in a mag. recently, and airplane bathrooms rated as one of the highest dirty germ ridden places!

At one point, someone in our family was getting sick on every vacation (regardless of where it was). During a Dr. visit to treat one of these illnesses, the Dr. gave me a reasonable explanation why so many people get sick on vacation.

1) Usually before a vacation, everyone gets pretty stressed tryign to get organized, pack, complete extra projects at the office, etc. This has the effect of reducing our natural immune system.

2) Our immune system does a good job of keeping us free from sickness in our normal environment. However, when we go to a new location (ie WDW) the virus' are slightly different than the virus' in our home city (virus' always mutuate). So, our body is not immune to the virus' in the new location. Thus, we get sick.

Pretty logical.

How can you avoid getting sick? Take precautions BEFORE you leave, to ensure your immune system is running on all cylinders.

We would have someone get sick on every family vacation until we started taking airborne before all flights and have not had a sick person since. Five trips in three years and no sick family member. That was the only thing we changed.:thumbsup2

How long before did you take it? And do you take it 1x a day?

I've been sick every trip. Sore throat/cold twice. One time I had just had surgery a month before. And, one year I had upset stomach the entire week. That was the only one where I actually missed a lot of time in the park. DH and I watched the World Cup.

This time, my MIL says I cannot get sick. I'm going to take lots of Vitamin C, and try to get my immune system up before we go.
