Getting Nervous About Philippe....

and they have identified another "tropical depression" quite near Phillipe...

please note I'm nervous for the Florida Residents, the Gulf Coast, as well as the east coasters, all who've been through ENOUGH of hurricanes!!

So I collective join in breathing the "GO AWAY" depressions/storms/hurricanes - stay out of the harms way!! Enough is enough, let us recover!!

Our trip is Oct 13-24. I booked this trip last January when hurricanes were not on my mind and AAA was offering $25 Disney Dollars. I doubt I will ever book during hurricane season again. I love the Food and Wine festival, but that big IF of a storm ruining our trip looms in the back of my mind. I don't need this anxiety.

Have you seen TD 18, most likely soon to be known as Tropical Storm Rita? Looks right now to be following pretty much the same track as Katrina did. Phillippe seems at the moment to be aiming for us here in the mid-atlantic states.

We booked for October 23-28 - aren't the hurricanes pretty much done by then ???

The official hurrican season runs from June 1 through November 30...with the peak being around September 15-20 (give or take a day).

So, while the peak will be long past by the time you are down there, it is not impossible that there could be a hurricane in late October.

BUT! I wouldn't worry about that at this time...just keep your eye on the tropical updates (we watch the weather channel) and knowing is half the battle! :)

That being said, we are leaving tomorrow for WDW, and I am keeping an eye on the tropics (and Phillipe and TD18). But I am not letting this ruin my Disney experience...I live in an area that has seen it's share of hurricanes. I'm not worried at all!!!

Everyone was worried Ophelia would ruin their vacations.

And she didn't. At least not at Disney World. It's my understanding tourists were evacuated from the Outer Banks.

Either way, there's NOTHING you can do - so why are you stressing? At the very worst, Disney would work with you to cancel or reschedule, as would airlines.

well, you know...as a Floridian who went through 3 of the 4 hurricanes last year...all I can say is...don't start worrying about it now. Seriously. Keep happy thoughts (hurricanes HATE happy thoughts) and keep on planning your trip. Don't upset the kiddies. Keep a positive attitude. Maybe this one (and the ones that follow) will just go on out to see like several already have this season.

On an interesting (and somewhat related note). Immediately after Frances last year, we (wife and i) found outselves without power (including a/c with temperatures reaching into the upper 90's), water, and ALMOST trapped in our neighborhood (actually had to go out and chop up a tree just to get out of our house!!!) and we decided that the only sane thing to do was to evacuate TO WDW!!!! So like I said, keep happy thoughts and keep on planning and dreaming of your trip and those mean old hurricanes will go the other way. :flower:

We were there this week last year when Jean did her whirl thru Orlando. Having gone thru the park closures, etc., I'm not worrying. The worst case scenario~you lose a day in the parks. Lucky for us, the hurricane arrived the day we were due to fly home.So we never lost time in the parks. We had to stay indoors for an entire day, but luckily we never lost power and the kids had TV and we could cook (we were in a 2BR villa at the Sheraton Vistana). It was a little freaky when the bed shook at 7am as the hurricane was hitting. That Monday, everything resumed as normal, except for the clean-up of palm trees and branches. I heard that Disney properties did an excellent job accomodating their guests~they're used to hurricanes after last year's season.
AS FOR RITA~They are saying she will probably skim South Florida and the keys, then onto the Gulf~say your prayers for our poor friends over there!!
AS FOR PHILIPE~he is heading NW towards the mid-atlantic region. Right now Florida doesn't have to worry.

The plus side of a storm approaching~it wasn't as hot with all the clouds that accompany it....hang tight Safety mom and relax....your vacation dreams will come true!!

:umbrella:

I'm not really worried about it, it would be disappointing to loose a day in the parks but it happens I guess!! All we can do is sit and hope that they go around Florida or if they do come over it won't be a cat 4 or 5 hurricane......yeah that would be bad!!!! Hoping that everyone has a great vacation in light of the weather :goodvibes

Just the price to pay for living in paradise. TS Phillipe shouldn't be a big deal. TD18 IF it tracks a bit north could give us all some rain this week in WDW. I'm from Houston and we are taking our computer so we can keep an eye out on TD18-they have it turning to the north at the end of the week and I'm a bit concerned about the kids and animals. YOu know you can track the hurricanes through the noaa site. Hurricaine season wouldn't stop me from planning a trip though :flower:

We're not heading to DW until November, BUT we live in the Bahamas, so we are watching the disturbances/tropical depressions very closely. We went through Hurricane Jean and Hurricane Francis last year, and both were in September, so I'm a little nervous. I'm actually counting down the days until the end of September. I know hurricane season is far from over, but the likelyhood a hurricane will hit after September diminished greatly. Got away Philippe, PLEASE go away....(that goes to all the other tropical disturbances out there too!!!) ;)

I leave for WDW on Friday :cool1: ...also watching the Atlantic tropics closely. Phillipe isn't forecast to pose much threat to land at this point, except maybe Bermuda. It's TD 18, soon to be Rita, that we should worry about for the folks in the Gulf states and Keys. Everything I've read has this storm going right into the Gulf, either west over Mexico or Texas, or if it turns north up into the Gulf states. We can only hope the latter does not happen...

Doesn't look like Rita will be any threat to Orlando, though, but who knows...I'm certainly no weather expert! Just recapping what I've read on different weather websites.

I'm not worried about my vacation, there's no point in stressing about something I have absolutely no control over. The best I can do is stay informed so I know what to expect. If we get a little rain, oh well, I'll still be in Disney World!!

Just curious, if we're up to the R's now and the season runs up to Nov. 30, what would happen if they went through to the z's? I know that this is highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

Edit to clarify: I'm wondering if they go to the list for the next year or if they come up with a new list of names. I know there is a rotating 6-year list.

Don't mind me. Just wondering. :)

If there are more than 21 named storms in the Atlantic in one season, additional storms are named according to the Greek alphabet (eg., Alpha, Beta, etc.)

They don't have "Z" names. They also don't have Q, U, X or Y. The names remaining for this season are Rita, Stan, Tammy, Vince and Wilma.

In 1995 there was a Hurricane Tanya. I haven't seen any names beyond that alphabetically.

The National Hurricane Center's website says "In the event that more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on."
