It seems once one pain in a leg goes away, another develops. I was running everyday with no problems. Started following a marathon training program which actually cut down on mileage and gave me day off, and I stated falling apart. Usually I can make it through. Now it is my knee and I can hardly even walk. I have a 10 mile race in 2 weeks. I'm so discouraged.

:grouphug: :grouphug: There are much wiser people than I here, who can advise you..but I'm a good hugger!! Just remember...this, too, shall pass...

How many miles are on your shoes? I did quite a number on my lower back in June and it was my training buddy Susan who brought up that my shoes had over 300 miles on them and 2 1/2 marathons. I thought they felt nicely comfy and figured I had at least another month in them. Oops LOL

A reminder to newer racers reading this thread do remember it's not a hard and solid 300 miles for each person. That changes depending on your body, your terrian and who knows what else. It's just a number to guide us. I think Dave lets like 200 on his before changing out.

Like Anne I'm sure someone else can point something else out that has more experience but wanted to toss that out there. My running injuries thankfully have been rather low.

I hope you find out what is going on ASAP so you can be comfortable again and injury free.

ETA: I confirm Anne is an amazing hugger! If not quite healing ability it sure does make you feel lighter and happier :)

All I can add (or ask)....

Does your knee pop? (get an MRI)

Is it swollen? (have it checked out and maybe get an MRI)

Is there limited ROM (Range of motion) (find out why...)

My knee popped for years and I just thought that was the way things were. I trained for one marathon just fine! Then suddenly in my second marathon (I can blame a foolish up hill run on my TM which had NOTHING to do with training) it popped again real good. Then my knee started to swell and was very sore while running. Turns out I most likely had a meniscus tear all that time and my foolish decision just made it worst. Sometimes you can function quite normally with it and sometimes not. I went from function normally to lot of times not and had to get it taken out.

Probably isn't what you have, but that is my experience with "everything was fine and suddenly it isn't" with my knee.

As far as your race--if you plan on doing it--the best thing you can do is do nothing...let your knee rest so that it can be at its best for race day. If you can barely walk on it--you will only make it worse.

Do not be afraid to get it checked out before the race if possible. I know it seems absolutely horrible to miss a race if by chance the prognosis in the immediate time frame is not good. But there are athletes who held out--and had a career (or distance) ending injury...that if they would have listened to the pain and just sat one out, they would be fine today. I do know one person who USED to do full marathons. But b/c she insisted on running with an ailment--can no longer do so. She can only go the half distance (no small feat by any means) and participates in marathons to get her endurance fix. But she switched due to injury--and not just out of personal whimsy.

I had a trainer look at it today. He feared the meniscus, but decided just a sore muscle thing, tendon or ligament can't remember which he said. So hopefully muscles will heal quickly. I'll go to the doctor if it isn't better pretty quickly. I have 2 prs of identical shoes, one with about 100 miles, one with maybe 20, so I'm okay there. My foot on the opposide side was really hurting following a long run, so I'm wondering Iif I over compensated and hurt the opposite knee. I'm learning the smallest thing can cause something else to break.

Thanks for the encouragement. It reallly helps. I was pretty down about it today. Things will better, I'm sure.

I hope you feel soon.

And yes--since our bodies are pretty much symmetrical--when stuff goes awry on one side....other stuff can happen on the other side as the body favors the better side to compensate.
