I know this has been answered, but I can't find it. What is the best way to get to Universal from Disney. I seem to remember some people mentioning a specific person/driver. I'm thinking of using a towncar service, but that is not set in stone.

Mears transportation is a popular choice, if you don't have a rental car. You can find them easily with a Google search. :)

We used Mears in September. You have to schedule your pick-up times in advance (24 or 48 hours notice, can't remember which) but it's easy and pretty cheap.

We are using Ed Korgan in February....I've only heard good things about him and his rates are very reasonable! :goodvibes

Mears is $19 round trip per person for the shuttle. At 3 passengers, it is cheaper to take a cab. The cabs are nice - like yellow town cars! :thumbsup2 If you go to the mears link above you can see the cost for the shuttle, do the cab estimator (very accurate in my experience) and also see the amounts for a town car. The down side of the shuttle is having to share the ride and deal with the scheduling. We were very happy with the mears cabs. (You can also take the Lynx bus for $3 but it is a major hassle and takes a long time.)

I just called Mears (because I needed to know too) and they said $19 per person (4 and up) to get from Disneyworld to Universal.

Good point! I just did the estimator and it quotes $35 from Epcot to Universal. A bit cheaper than the $19 per person (3 of us= $57). Even if we sat in traffic it would still be cheaper!

but isn't that only one way? when we went in 2009, it cost about $30 each way for a cab. the mears shuttle price is for a return.

Mears is $19 pp, r/t. If there are more than 3 of you going, it makes sense to hire a towncar service. That usually runs about $75-80.
I have done it both ways. I found Mears shuttle to be very effecient and easy to use.

We had 5 people in our group so Mears would have cost more than a taxi with less flexibility. We've used a town car before when we could split the cost with an another family. The taxi was the cheapest option. It worked very well. They use taxi vans for a party like ours, very nice, and we could come and go without scheduling it.

I have not used this company but the rates look good. You might want to check into it. I can't post the link but the company is Florida Sunshine Shuttle.

You can also rent a car onsite and it costs (for a smal 5 passenger) about 60 bucks for 24 hours

How can I do this?? This would be ideal for us (I want to go to the disney outlet while we are there).

I believe the company is Hertz. We stayed at POP and my dh just left at 730 am and they sent a shuttle for him to meet at the front desk. It is located just behind a gas station you pass on your way to MK ( I think,it could be on your way to one of the other parks.) It cost 59 includng tax. The next day Ron drove it back at about 830 and filled up the tank. Then the hertz employee adrove him back. He was back by 900 ish.

What I have found to be the best solution is to simply rent a car for the duration of your visit. The short answer is that time is money. Anything you do for just the day will take time away from your vacation. (like picking up a rental car the night before) Odds are you'll also arrive at Universal well after the park opens. Just WDW, getting to Universal early is very helpful.

The rates for renting on Disney property are higher than the airport rates, in my experience. Last I looked, I could get a one day rental for $120, or a week long rental for $200 using discounts. Kind of a no brainer, IMO.

The best discounts are to be found at the airport.
Picking up arental car at the airport takes less time than ME (30min or more), especially if you belong to one of the rental car clubs, like National's Emerald club. Some clubs give you an additional driver for no fee. Dropping off cars a MCO is also VERY easy if you pick one of the many on airport rental companies.

One more protential savings to be derived from a rental car is a trip to a grocery store or convenience store. I don't find it's worth buying a ton of groceries, but one case of water at the Hess stations on property will save $20 - over buying water in WDW at $3 per bottle.

Sometimes I like taking WDW free transportation, but plenty of times using a rental car to get around will save you quite a bit of time, often over an hour (resort to resort, DTD)! By my figures, I'm typically spending over $20 per waking hour to be at WDW. Anything that saves me an hour is like putting $20 in my pocket.

Priceline a rental car. Last September we got a mid-size car for $6 a day. So much easier than any bus.

All of the major car rental companies have sites somewhere on Disney property. Hertz is at Shades of Green, Alamo/National are at the Car Care Center, and most of the others are on Hotel Blvd. Most have shuttles that will pick you up.

Dreams Unlimited has a special ticket with transportation from Disney to Universal- $115 per adult for both Universal and IOA including transportation; I think we're going to use this when we go in Feb.

We did this through Mears when USO tix were $82 for a 2 park one day ticket. It cost $83. We were picked up early and picked our pickup time. When we arrived at the area to be picked up, they were sitting there waiting. Saved the gas plus parking, now $15. Best deal ever.
