Since the MDE app includes the ages of everyone connected with an account, does that mean that a restaurant server can check if someone is 21+ with the Magic Bands, or do we still need to carry a Drivers' License if we want to order alcohol in a restaurant?

It’s still advised to bring your drivers license. I don’t drink but Dh does. He’s never been carded but still brings his ID. You could easily give your magic band to someone else so that’s why they might card you

They can absolutely ask to see a valid ID. And international visitors please keep in mind that per Florida law they require either your passport or your driver's licence PLUS a picture or copy of your passport. A US issued ID such as a Nexus card works too.

You definitely need ID. As another poster said, there's absolutely nothing stopping people from swapping bands, so that's not a valid way of checking someone's age. There's also nothing stopping people from lying about their age in MDE.

I would say that is on Disney for not introducing fingerprint scanners at check outs or at the very minimum pictures on your DME profile that Disney takes at the start of each stay if you opt in.

A few years ago, my then-teenage daughter, attempted to buy a box of liquer-filled chocolate candy in Mexico in Epcot and was not permitted because she wasn't 21. I was nearby and able to buy the candy for her. It never occurred to us that she'd be carded buying candy.:)

I'm looking to carry as little as possible into the parks, so I guess we have to decide whether it's more important to travel light or forgo alcohol 🍹

Thanks everyone.

I can definitely appreciate wanting to travel light. There are phone cases and/or "pockets" that you can add to your phone to slip an ID or credit cards into … that might be an answer. Or they sell the lanyards with a pocket/envelope you could use to carry an ID. Just echoing that it's a good idea to bring an ID no matter your age. I am very clearly well over 21 and am very rarely carded in WDW or anywhere … but I had a CM who was in training and she was by the book carding everyone. Beyond alcohol, an ID can be useful in case of a ticket and/or magic band issue or - god forbid- a medical emergency. Hope that you have a great trip!!!

Kinda seems like you answered your own question given your exact prior experience on someone in your traveling party being declined due to not of age. You know it can happen.

We like to carry as little as possible too but I'm not without my ID, one or two of my cards (debit or credit) and a little bit of cash. That small bit is not going to be a real issue (it's like the size of my palm here). I like my ID on me regardless of purchasing alcohol in a theme park but that's just me.

Bring the ID. I had an AP and magic band attached and still got carded 75% of the time. I look like I’m a lot younger than I am so if that’s the case for you too they will card more times than not.

I have personally seen an international visitor denied service because she didn't have ID. She tried to explain that all her information was on her MB (MDE account) but the staff said that was not a valid form of ID.

All of my adult children get carded every single time in WDW. One is 30! DH and I don't get carded but we are 50's. I would probably kiss a server if they asked me for ID, lol! Anyway.... I bought a slim phone case with a wallet pocket on the back that holds my ID, credit card and a very small amount of cash. I can go bagless and carry very little in the parks because I just put my phone in my pocket.

Just adding....
This is similar to the case I have:
phone case wallet

Our local arena went bagless last year so I use it when we go to hockey games also, and baseball games in the summer. It's convenient and you still can carry your basics.

That still doesn’t work because you self enter your birthday into MDE. They’d have to do an ID check when they take your picture. To me that seems like more hassle than just carrying ID.

In defense of Disney - this could very well be one of those cases where the TECHNOLOGY to do something exists, but State and/or Federal LAW won't recognize it as valid :(.

This happened to my son and daughter in law as well with the candy in Epcot. They were 23 but didn't have ID on them, did have their magic bands on. We were in a different park so they left without the purchase.

If anyone remotely looks young. I’d bring an ID. I’m 48 lol. And places by law. Still card. Not sure if that’s Florida law. In Ohio. If one looks under 40. Waiters are supposed to card. But it’s not written law.

Not at WDW but I laughed the other day when I was with my adult children and got carded buying alcohol. No complaining from me, I don't mind.
