Okay another question - again for my aunt - She is currently on Coumadin for a blood clot she had developed during her hospital stays this spring. The doctor has already told her she will probably be on the Coumadin for at least 6 months. The thing we are concerned about is that she has been getting her blood checked weekly, and will probably have to get it checked while we are on vacation in Disney this summer.

Is there a lab anywhere near Disney for getting blood checked? My aunt said she was going to ask her doctor on the next visit, but was just wondering if anybody on here knew??

(it would be awesome if there was someplace onsite for this but I highly doubt it!)

Thanks again for any and all help!

Hi there. Afteer you have been on coumadin for a while you usually don't have to get your blood checked weekly. After you've been on it a while on a stable dose you can often back off the blood checks. So, hopefully, your aunt will be able to go the week without labs. I'd ask her to speak with her provider.

Thank you so much for the reply! Oh wow that would be awesome if she could back off the blood checks! I just told her about your reply and she said she will definately be asking next doctor's visit!! Thank you so much!!!

If you are staying on property the closest location would probably be Celebration Hospital. Your doctor will have to provide a written request (usually on a prescription form) to get any blood work done. Also there should be some coordination between the doctor and the hospital as what to do if there is an unusual result of the test. Also, the doctor should have some way to contact you if something needs to be done before your return and her next appointment.

We went there last year when my son had to have his blood checked (he is also on Coumadin, in his case for life). yes, you need a prescription for it, but they were really nice and caring about getting it done. They did NOT take our insurance which was a pain, but oh well... our 10 WDW stay and 4 night wonder cruise was worth it!

And yes, once things stablize a bit, you don't need to go as often. We go monthly now, unless something happens that tells me his #'s are off. It took some doing though to get everything tweaked. The big thing is though to watch the eating habits. Changing how much of the dark green veggies are eaten can alter the levels, as cranberry juice, and other foods.

Have a wonderful trip!

Thank you all so much for that awesome info!!

And, cdhheidi, my aunt's insurance isn't even covering her blood getting checked in our hometown, she has to pay each and every time for getting it checked, so having to pay out will be something she is used to anyhow.

If she goes to a lab such as Quest Diagonistics, they do have labs down in Orlando if I'm not mistaken. Maybe she could make an appointment there if need be.

Have a great trip! :)

Okay, bumping it back up here for a few more questions - we found out this morning that my aunt will indeed have to have her blood checked down there - her levels are way out of whack for some reason...

Where in Celebration is the hospital? I will be mapquesting it, but I'd like to know a general gist of where it is.

Where do we go in? Emergency? or Outpatient?

Can you go early in the morning? How early?

We tried calling this afternoon but nobody in outpatient was answering the phone so we will call again tomorrow, but was hoping to get a few questions answered before calling again!

Thanks in advance!!

The address is 400 Celebration Place. Their main phone number is 407-303-4000

Make sure you also have the # of a local pharmacy (just in case the Dr really has to change around her dose while in WDW) with you. Give the Dr you cel phone # to call with any Coumadin dosing changes and keep the local pharmacy # with you just in case. Chances are he knows what dose your aunt is on and will know what mg to tell her to take and how many pills (or half of pills) but if need be you will have the pharmacy #.

As for the bloodwork, the earlier in the day you go, the earlier in the day the dr might get the results. You would want to go outpatient Labs.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!! You have helped us so much!!!

And Cheshire Figment, thank you thank you thank you!!!

I love you all sooooo much!

I have been on Coumadin for 3+ years and have used Quest Diagnostics which is about 15 minutes from WDW. At times I still need my INR levels checked weekly.....Just make sure you don't arrive between 12-1 they are closed for lunch.

2000 N Alafaya Trl Suite 100 Orlando
1603 S Hiawassee Rd Suite 120 Orlando
9350 Turkey Lake Road Suite 200 Orlando

*All 3 sites take appointments as well.

Another thing to think about is asking your doctor or the clinic where you currently go if they have any suggestions of where to go. As NEVERENOUGHWDW mentioned, there are other places besides the hospital, where you can go.

However, if you go to Quest I would suggest only the Turkey Lake Road site. That is near the Dr Phillips Hospital (Formerly Sand Lake Hospital) and the shortest distance.

Alafaya Trail is way over on the East side of Orlando and a good 40 plus miles from WDW.

And the address on Hiawassee is almost 20 miles away.

Thank you all again so much for your help! We just got back, my aunt had to get her INR checked twice while down there - used Celebration Hospital and they really were great! You seriously would not know its a hospital at all it doesn't even have that hospital smell ;)

But everything went well, their staff is awesome, and we'd recommend to anyone!

Thanks everyone on here for all the super help!! I love you all!!!

thanks for letting us know how it went.
and glad to hear things went so well.

Hi there! I am a Canadian going to Disney Monday and need my INR checked 2 or 3 times.......we have phoned celebration hospital and they say they have no idea, I would have to go through the emergency room and that if my Canadian doc requisitioned it, that they couldn't accept it because it is "foreign"

I am desparate for advice! I don't want to have to stay home because of this technicality!

Tory Jones

how did you set up the INR tests at Celebration? We are from Canada and are going Monday, and when we phoned them they had no idea how we would do it short of going as an emergency room patient??

Needing help,

Tory Jones

When we were going, my aunt had called Celebration Hospital and asked for the INR testing area, and they put us through directly to the department. They told her to bring her orders from her doctor, and they said they couldn't promise that her insurance would cover it, just to come to the hospital on the day the doctor prescribed to go. (she ended up only having to pay $15 for each time her blood was checked) I don't know why they are telling you to go through the ER, when we went, my aunt was taken at the front desk and they started to do her paperwork.

My guess would be to try and call again, and ask for the department in charge of INR - they would be able to answer your questions better. Also, since you are Canadian, you may have to pay up front, and they would be able to help you with that as well.

Hope that helps!! :flower3:
