Get in Shape & Lose Weight for August 2014 Group

I have been sick since Thursday so I haven't been eating much because I couldn't keep it down. I lost 2 lbs though but I think I would have rather lost it another way! My goals for this week is to keep eating healthy and drink lots of water.

I'm joining in! I'm going to Disney World in August and I have a 2 week family vacation (parents, brother & his GF plus my family) in July, too.

I lost 35 pounds on Jenny Craig two years ago and in the last year I've crept back up 10 (work-related stress led to emotional eating and slacking off on exercise). I was laid off last month, but I got a decent severance package, so I'm focusing on me, my kids and my house for the next two months while I figure out what I want to be when I grow up. ;)

Joined WOW last Tuesday and was surprised to learn that I should focus on building muscles first, not cardio exercise. I told the trainer I want to lose 30 pounds by mid-July and we worked out a plan. I have no excuse not to work out 5 times a week now, and I'm motivated to do just that!

Looking forward to reading through all the previous posts!

I like the pirate code! Lol. Too much junk food last night and today! Still I lost .5 pounds. Better down than up, right? This week I will add to my goal of walking 2 miles on days I am not taking a Zumba class. I will add target of 25 grams of fiber and drinking a 16 oz glass of water first thing in the morning. I just read that these are two goals that can help you stay full through the day.

Down is betters. Yay! :)

My goals for this week are to go to the gym after my kids are off to school (all 5 days), drink 8 glasses of water a day and to use MyFitnessPal app.

Logged in my breakfast and water for this morning and I'm headed to the gym now for 50 mins of cardio (bike/treadmill) and the muscle-building exercises I've learned so far (front squats with stability ball on my back/wall, planks, lunges and modified pushups).

Have a great week everyone!:goodvibes

Got to the gym this morning. I love the silent alarm on my fit bit. Wish I could climb back in bed the rest of the day!! Or be heading out to a WDW park this morning :)

Welcome! The information about building muscle is interesting. Now I really need to make sure I don't skip my bowflex workouts this week...

This weekend was a mixed bag for me. I had bowling on Friday, the same day I woke up at 4 am and couldn't get back to sleep. After waking up at around 2 the night before. I didn't have time to "nap" before going and stayed up until about 1 am. I was totally exhausted. I had my worst score this season on my last game. I couldn't seem to stabilize my knee and each ball was off just a little bit. :( On a good note, I only had a beer and no snacks. Saturday I was still tired and didn't do much. Sunday was a Behind the Scenes event at our zoo. We took the kids and saw some interesting things like where they keep our lions off exhibit and the winter quarters for our zebras, elands, ostriches and such. We did some walking, but kind of like you do at Disney with walking then standing in lines. But man was it cold. It was supposed to be warmer than it has been, but the wind was really blowing and it was icy! I was worried for DD because she's coming off a sinus infection. Then when we got home we did a bunch of stuff with our fish tanks. We moved a ~40 gal half moon up to our room. I'm hoping the filter noise will help me sleep (my ears ring all the time and sometimes it's enough to keep me up.) Then we moved our fish and tank stuff (rocks, etc) between our two other tanks. One is larger than the other and we have cichlids in one that are starting to out grow the other tank. I'm going to kind of count that as a strength workout. :)

OK, sorry about the "generic-ness" of this, but I have been reading everyone's comments and are glad for our successes and wishing support for our challenges. Having you all along for this journey has really been inspirational for me. Let's keep it up!

ETA: I added our code to the second post. I added one about getting enough sleep :rolleyes1

Mind if I join in? Our trip isn't until October but my goal is to hit my goal in August so I have some time to fine tune and get used to maintaining before I go and get off track ;)

Doing WW and I've lost 40 over the last year - took a couple months off during that time. Looking to lose 26 definitely before we go and hopefully by August.

Thanks for the welcome!

Today my trainer explained to me WHY working the muscles is important for weight loss, so I thought I'd share it with the group.

The first reason is because you continue to burn calories for much longer after a strength-training workout than after a cardio workout. (Note: the trainer told me you continue to burn for more than 24 hours after, but I checked online and most sources say this only continues for about 4 hours after your workout  - but, it's still MORE.) The other reasons include improving bone density, balance and sleep. Today I was also told that I should be matching my cardio workout time with my strength-training workout time; so if I'm working on my muscles for 30 minutes, I should also do at least 30 minutes of cardio that day.

Also, I splurged and bought a Fitbit flex yesterday. I haven't purchased a gadget for myself in - - I can't remember when I bought myself a gadget! :cool1:

Boo to being sick  and good luck with you goals this week!

I was sick a few weeks ago (fever, chills, etc. for 24 hours) and it's taken me until this past weekend to feel "good" again. I can't remember being sick like that, but I'm sure it was made worse by stress (I was laid off last month).

Now that I have some free time on my hands, I'm focusing on me, so finding this thread was perfect timing. Thanks digiMom! :cheer2:

Sure! I think the main thing is we want to keep our eye on the target, and for us that's August. So if you have the same target, why not. Just be cautioned that we will be getting really excited as our trips get closer. We may drive you crazy! ;)

My oldest son is sick so no Zumba class tonight, my hubby has a meeting at the same time. But my youngest son and I went for an hour long hike! The weather is beautiful , so nice to be outside.

Did you hear about the nasty stuff that is coming Wednesday? I want summer!

I was so frustrated with this morning. I meant to do my workout and just ran out of time. Either time was going fast or I was going slow. So I took stairs instead of elevators at work. And this evening DH and I took a nice walk with the dog. We are in the Milwaukee area and it was pretty nice; it got up to 54. It goes back down to about 35 tomorrow and is supposed to snow..again..

I can't stand it - another dumping of the dreaded white stuff. You're supposed to get more up north than us in southern MA. (Of course, my kids asked, "Do you think we won't have school Thursday?" They "forget" about the fact that they'll be in school in July at this rate!)

Maybe this is it. Wishful thinking, I know, but a girl's gotta dream!

We've missed 5 days of school so far this year and had a few early releases. The early releases counted as a full day and because we switched from block scheduling to an longer day with 7periods we have the extra time to cover those missed 5 days. Not sure if another missed day would be covered or not. Our last day is still June 13th.

Wow that is great! We had seven snow days an are in school until the latest possible date June 20. Any more snow days will be taken off of April vacation week. We actually go to school I think 3 more days than we have to- its too bad that those three days have to be made up, but I guess it's all about contracts and money. My siblings work in other states where they have a snow day bank- set aside days that don't have to be made up.

My DDs high school is adding 10 minutes to the start if every day. So now her bus comes at 6:40 in the morning. DSs in middle school and they haven't had to do anything. .. Yet.

Let's do a question:

Is there anything you're looking forward to once you reach your goal weight?

For me, there's many things I'm looking forward to. But one thing that stands out is I'd really like to enjoy clothes shopping again. It's such a durge now. I have to try on so many things just to find something I can stand. I go by myself; I can't remember the last time I went with a friend. And I'd really like to find a pretty dress or two. My "girls" are big and I just don't like how dresses fit and look on me. That's something that motivates me.
