Hi I travel back and forth from Fla to Georgia very often.

I just want to mention a few things, to help you keep your hard earned Disney money, also you might want to adust your time schedule when going through GA. I have some other tips that might help your drive thru our lovely state.

1) There is a 52 mile stretch of construction between Tiffton and Macon on I-75 that is on both side of the road. The speed limit is 60 and they mean 60 not 61. I counted 20 or more law enforcment office patroling and ticketing in this area.

2) In Georgia, they have a move over law, and they are serious about it, if there is a officer stopped on the side of the road you better move over.

3) Georgia is a no nonsense state when it comes to speeding so slow down, 80 to 85 will get you a super ticket.

4) I-285 that goes around Atlanta is posted different speeds so be aware. This is also has high volume of traffic, during rush hours, so do your self a favor and try to come through during non-peak hours. This is not for the faint of heart. If you do hold on...:scared1:

5) Exit 115 off of I-85 is where the Mall of Georgia is, lots of nice places to get something to eat and stretch your legs. All major chains are at this exit, one of my favorites is O Charley's it is tucked behind, chili's and macaroni grill, nice relaxed atmosphere, and good food and a fair price, and good portions and selections. NOrmally very easy to get a table without a long wait. If you like diner food, try the Sugar Hill diner a few miles past the mall, great breakfast huge portions and at the right price. They have dessert to die for, take one along for the ride.

6) Exit 99 off of I-85 - The Varsity (this is a famous Atlanta landmark this one is not the orginal one it is still in downtown, very hard to get in and out of). This one is small but has the same great food, and fun, very reasonable priced.

7) Exit 63 off of I-75 - Check out Adcock Pecans, great place to pick up some snacks for the resort, they have different, jams, jellies, dressing, salsa, candy and of course Pecans, and Peaches in season. Nice place to stop and they have very clean restrooms.

We drive through GA on our way to Disney from Chattanooga to Valdosta.

We ALWAYS comment on how many people we see pulled over by the State Troopers and local police. It's a BUNCH!!!

I concur with the advice to slow it down!

1) Glad the cops are always in view when driving thru the construction. Keeps everyone safe.

2)Michigan also has the move over law so no problem.

3)Yep that one's also true but seems no one has informed the Georgia residents,lol....

4) I avoid the Atlanta bypass and just drive thru Atlanta in the HOV lane much faster...

5) very good info

6) Dsis and I on one of our drives to Florida from Michigan stopped at the Varisty just for fun. Great coneys...

7) Someone in our car always has to stop here.

8) I would also like to add to fill up the gas tank before leaving Georgia. Usually much cheaper than Florida

9) If you are driving thru several states to Florida pick up the book by Dave Hunter "Along I75" Lots of great info like the OP shared above along with exit info

Most jurisdictions in other places won't ticket for 5 over due to the possibility of the speedometer not being calibrated correctly. Most jurisdictions will not uphold a ticket for 5 or less over for the same reason.

I am the daughter of a police officer, the niece of a police officer, and grew up in the department. Most officers I know will try and educate and warn people before ticketing them. They will give the driver the benefit of the doubt unless the driver is being dangerous. Yes, the law is the law and it is the same for everyone... but that doesn't mean that everyone is breaking it on purpose. A warning can work just as well if not better then a ticket at times.

When I wrote this it was to give out some info, to help with the drive. Just to make everyone aware, and to make sure everyone got to were they were going safely and to remind everyone about our traffic and maybe a few helpful stops along the way.

I never intended for this to get out of hand....

The PP was talking about the police force... who do have a reputation of targeting out of state plates. They do this because how many people from out of state are going to make the trip to defend themselves when their court date comes up? Even I know about the reputation.

My brother is a retired Deputy so I understand what it is like to have someone you love wear the Badge. So I just want to say Thanks to your Dad and Uncle or Aunt for what they do everyday, by putting there life on the line. It so hard for people that don't have a loved in law enforcement or the miltary understand what there job entails, they take it willingly to keep us safe for so many things. God Bless you and yours.

I appreciate it. We were lucky. My uncle was never injured on the job. My dad separated his shoulder after being thrown against his squad while trying to break up a fight outside of a bad and broke his ankle chasing a suspect on foot during the winter. However, we did thank our lucky stars every day he came home. I never really understood as a younger child just what it meant... until my mom got the phone call that he had been injured. That was the first time I really KNEW what could happen and what the job entailed.

My friend wasn't so lucky though. Her uncle was killed during a traffic stop after he was struck by a truck who passed too close on the highway. This was before the move over laws really came to be (or at least, became a big deal). I remember how much it scared me to see my dad go to work after that happened to my friend's family. It hit very close to home.

They always said that the basic traffic stop was THE most dangerous thing an officer will do during their career.

Don't sweat it. Sometimes that happens on here. You gave out some good info. I don't have anything against you or anyone else in Georgia........except my sister in law;). Do you travel on 95 at all? Coming thru in a week and a half, any construction going on?

No we really don't go over that way, I do have some friends that travel on 95. They just came back form a trip, I will see what they have to say.

Okay...now that this has been 'cleaned up' a bit...please, can we try to stay on topic?? There will be no arguing or name calling. Those types of posts will be deleted.
I'm sorry if I've offended anyone by 'modifying' their post, but I wanted to delete any inflammatory posts. Hopefully, you will all understand.

It seems most questions are asked about the drive thru Georgia and I felt you provided great info. Susan

I'm overnighting now in Pooler, Georgia off I-95 tonight. The speed limit is mostly 70 and locked my speed at 71 according to my GPS (74 according to the speedometer) and I'm one of the slower vehicles out there. Also have not seen one patrol car on the interstate yet here.

It depends on the day. Sometimes there will be a patrol every few miles it seems from Brunswick up to Savannah. I live close by and am also "one of the slower vehicles".

How, if there is someone else in the left lane who won't let you over?

In most move over states, if you cannot move over safely, you must slow considerably down. Is Georgia such a state?

(Just a reminder for those who ride the left lane. If you see an office stopped on the side of the road, please let those in the right lane over.)

Up in NY if you can not move over you are supposed to slow down to at least 40.

Continuing my march north on I-95: I saw no law enforcement vehicles in Georgia, South Carolina & North Carolina. I did see several troopers in both Florida & Virginia. Tomorrow the march north continues.

This Sept we'll be driving down from Nebr, and we'll only be able to make it to the western suburbs of St Louis the 1st night. We're planning on driving about 12 hrs the next day, if not longer, and are concerned about that long stretch of construction slowing us down. But we'll be watching the speed. Thanks!

Do you suggest the bypass for Atlanta, or staying on I-75?

Thanks again for all the great info.

I just had to read this because it triggered a childhood memory of driving to Disney with my family

When I was 5 years old driving to Disney my Daddy(a Marine) would be very careful in Georgia and if he could would try not to travel through it much to get to Disney:lmao: now I am going to be 47 and seems to still be true:lmao: Wow! it seems those Georgia officers need some pixie dust:wizard:

I actually just got a "warning" from an officer and was driving with my boss...

my boss said to me after my conversation with the officer...that is not how I expected you to talk to the officer...and she had a bemused look on her face like she was thinking (only you could get away with that or would even think like that)

I gave the officer a good what for(respectfully of course) because I was in his town for charity work and I felt I was NOT in the wrong. :lmao: I have never had a ticket in my entire life, I was totally offended! :rotfl:

Guess that would not work in Georgia, unless I knew the officers mother.:rolleyes1
