CRCT Test Scores are In
The Criterion Reference Competency Test is a state exam designed to test the strengths and weaknesses of all Georgia students.
Here are some of the results. We'll start off with Muscogee County's 4th graders. Students in 30 out of 33 schools showed improvements in reading, 23 in language arts, and 26 in math. In 6th grade reading, 9 out of 11 showed improvement. 8 in language arts, and 6 in math. And in 8th grade -- 4 out of 11 schools showed improvement in reading, 9 in language arts and 8 in math.
One school that showed a jump in improvement is Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary where teachers, students and administrators are celebrating their CRCT scores. The school's principal said the Georgia Choice program is getting a lot of credit for helping students bring up their test scores. In all three categories the students' scores have increased 20% or more. That's compared to last year's scores.
Georgia Choice is the state version of a national program that helps failing schools. Georgia Choice is going on its second year. "We come into the school and give it a focus," said Georgia Choice Instructor Betty Brass. "First it was literacy and now we're implementing math this year. We saw an improvement even before we got the scores back, but it's great to see it on the tests too." "It gives the boys and girls a since of pride to know they made progress," said Principal Terry Baker.
Georgia choice teachers said they normally see a 10% increase on the CRCT. They are excited to see more than twice that -- a 20 percent plus increase.
Starting in 2004, kids who are now second graders will have to pass the CRCT in order to move on to the next grade. From that point the phasing in begins. Gradually, kids in other grades will face the same requirement.
