General question about weather in September

I have only been to Orlando/WDW in late April/early May of 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006, but DH just surprised me tonight with a short trip in September of this year. I have no idea what the weather is like at this time of year, other than my assumption that it is HOT. Does anyone have any experience with going at this time of year? Typically it is mid to high 80's when we go in April/May. It is unbearable in September? TIA :)

We're going for the first time in September this year too and I'm wondering the same thing! Are we going to be wilting? I'm a little worried about the heat :scared:

We went in September of 2003 and it was sweltering hot! The makeup just melts off your face after about 3 minutes. The crowds are low though. I said I would never go during that time again, I like early November better. Anyway free dining came out and we decided to go again in Sepember over Labor Day. My DS 2 doesn't do that well with heat some I'm worried. We plan to take breaks so the kids don't get overheated in the afternoon at the resort pool. Next trip will be christmas time for us. It is just so humid in September and August. :scared:

Native here.

September is probably one of the hottest months. Not only the actual temps (going from high 80s to high 90s), but don't forget to factor in the humidity. This is not a dry heat; it's moist, and will often add 10 degrees to whatever temp the weatherman says. We call this the heat index. So a temp of 96 will have the heat index (or feel) of 106.

The times from around 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or so are brutal. Try and be inside or wet as much as possible during these times (stores, rides, pool).

We tend to have afternoon thunderstorms generally rolling in around the 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. time. They usually don't last long, tho, maybe half an hour or so. However, respect these storms! These are not "Up North" storms. There is a ton of very serious lightning. Get indoors. We generally always plan on being back at our hotel in the late afternoons to freshen up, shower and change before heading back out to the parks or nightlife activities. Epcot is a good place to be during a storm since there's so many stores to duck into, too.

Plan to sweat...I'm talking dripping wet. Wear clothes appropriate for being wet either from sweat, rain or splashes gleefully welcomed from water rides.

Carry water with you at all times. I cannot stress enough to keep hydrated throughout the day. Drink when you are not thirsty. Even locals carry water during the day in their professional lives (come on down to the courthouse and see all the lawyers carrying their briefcases and water bottles on the street).

The only other weather-related item I can think of is to watch for hurricanes. We get notice of them, and hotels at WDW or USO are generally a good place to be. Obviously, September is a time to be flexible with arrival/departure dates due to the 'canes. We've had to extend or delay a couple trips in years past (we're two hours away, so it wasn't a big deal) due to 'canes directed at our hometown, Orlando or somewhere along the path we take to get to Orlando.

HTH & we'll be there sweating right with you!

Well, the last post gave you pretty much eveything you need to know about the weather in September. We went the first full week of September last year.

The plus is that we loved the crowd factor. During the week I don't think they ever unwrapped the Fast Pass machines. We never waited more than 5-10 minutes for everything. That was great because of the minus!!!

The minus is that it was really really hot!! Now we've been down before in July and August but for some reason, last year felt even hotter. At least we were not waiting in any huge lines in the heat. Walking from one area to the next was enough. :rotfl:

We're heading down very late October/early November this year and are certainly hoping for cooler weather. The best would be to have the same size crowds and cooler weather!! :cool1:

I tried to get my DS's to reschedule back into September when free dining came out but they both said "NO WAY".

At least the good news is that you're in WDW!!!!

When does this extreme heat tend to start to "break"? Does it stay like this well into October?

Generally not, Lovestoscrap. There will be days here and there in October which are brutally hot, but pretty much end of August through September are the worst. Yesterday was a killer, tho. I'm two hours north of the world, and it was 97 here with a heat index of nine, so it felt like 106. No rain, either, which rain can actually sometimes make it feel hotter -- think of a swamp! We ate dinner outside at our local Tex-Mex joint, and we were just dripping wet all through our meal. Used more napkins for sweat than we did our mouths.

Not complaining here! I'll take sweating over shivering any day :)

We always visit WDW in September. Love the low crowds. HOT in the afternoon, so you hit the parks in the early AM then again at night. Lounging, playing poolside in the afternoon. Also, afternoon is a great time to visit some of the restaurants that are usually reserved for supper meals. For instance, Alfredo's is much more enjoyable and leisurally at 2 pm than at 8 pm. You just have to alter your schedule a bit to accomodate the hot, hot days. And don't push yourself...when people you love have sweat pouring down their faces as you stand in line for a ride, it's time to change gears and hit a pool.

You guys are killin me with this heat talk. I'm goin last week of August for the free meal deal. Usually go in the cooler months. Just doin 1 park though the rest of the time will be by the pool and restaurants. Going to be a "laid back" Disney vacay. We're going again right after Thanksgiving so it should be cooler then. Love that time of the year. Slow and Christmas decor is up. Stop with the Heat Talk!!!!!!!

I concur. As someone who can speak from experience after being struck by lightning in Florida (well, the car I was in was struck by lightning), I advise everyone to take cover when these storms roll in. Downright absurd lightning.
