What is the best way to utilize points you can't use? Are you better off renting the points or making an actual reservation at a resort and transferring that to someone?

you don't technically "transfer" a reservation.

but if you have pts you don't need, you can either:

1) make a reservation and rent that reservation to either a dvc owner or a non-owner (probably easier to wait until the renter lets you know what dates to reserve - if that's what you mean by "renting points")

or 2) transfer the points themselves to another dvc owner.

it doesn't make much of a difference...although i suspect you can usually get more money by renting the reservation.

Thanks for your reply. Is your point that it is better to rent an actual reservation because you are saying that those are harder to get vs the points are too generic?

i'm probably confusing things.

here are 3 options:

1) offer to make a reservation for someone for a rental price

2) make a specific reservation and then offer to rent it

3) transfer the pts to another DVC owner.

in options 1 & 2, you are the landlord. if your renters leave credit card charges unpaid or trash the room, then disney comes looking for you as the responsible party.

of those 2 options, i think it's an easier sell to pick #1 - offer to make a reservation. the downside is a lot of people wait until a couple of months ahead of time and want difficult to book dates. but of those 2, i would say #1 is the better option...it is difficult to book a specific set of dates and hope someone else needs exactly those dates (but those are what you see for rent on ebay.)

i'd probably prefer option 3, though, since i wouldn't have any responsibility for the points that have been transferred any longer. not a big risk, but i'd rather not have to worry about it.

thanks so much

how do you do option #3 which I agree is the best?

I thought Disney won't transfer any points?

They have to be current year points, not banked or borrowed.

If you make a reservation and try to sell it, you won't be able to post it on the DIS until 30 days out. You might find other websites, but you won't be able to post on the Rent/Trade Board.

If you are still within your banking period, you could bank those points and use them next year.
