Just had to vent. We just returned from a week stay at AKV. We booked a value as the view is not important to us. Checked in at 7am, finally got the room around 3:30pm, not an issue as I know the check in times are 4pm. Went up to the room and the smell of smoke nearly knocked us down. I went down and notified the front desk that we could not stay in that room, DW is very sensitive to cigarette / cigar smoke. They finally found us another room and we were fine with that one. But I have two gripes about this, first is obvious - the rooms are "No Smoking" so people need to follow this and Disney needs to enforce it. Second, how could this room have just been cleaned and not noticed.:confused3

Sorry, just had to get that out and also warn others.

That is horrible!! I would've been upset too. They should charge those who just checked out an extra cleaning fee or something of the sort.

I also can't believe housekeeping didn't notice and let the front desk rent it out. It obviously needed to be aired out and thoroughly cleaned to get the smell of smoke out.

Being a non-smoker, I can understand completely....I never go anywhere without packing Lysol.:)

As far as the cleaning person, if that person is a smoker, they would never have noticed....they are just so used to the smell, they can't smell it anymore.

i've never had any sort of smoke experience like this with any of my DVC stays! Sorry you went through that and I'm glad they got you another room.

Exactly. Disney has made it clear that if you smoke in the room, you will be fined. I would have assumed that the housekeeping came in and noticed and immediately informed the front desk to get in touch with the previous guest and charge them for the deep cleaning of the room.

The resort should not offer this room to anyone until it is completely cleaned.

That is very annoying. We are sensitive to smoke as well so I can emphathize.

DH has breathing problems (COPD) and cannot tolerate smoke. The new policy says that smoking is NOT allowed on balconies. During one of our recent stays people were smoking on the balcony below so we were not able to use our balcony. Because DH cannot really walk around parks, he likes to spend lots of time on the balcony. Multiple calls to management did not fix the situation. I am unconvinced that Disney is prepared to really enforce the no-smoking policy. Hopefully I am wrong.

I have always feared this because of my son's asthma. I am sorry this happened to you. I agree..........people that smoke need to NOT smoke in the villas. Of course I wonder how much smoke you smell from the smokers just sitting on the furniture and all?????? Even if they smoke outside....if several smokers stay in a villa and they follow the rules of smoking outside....maybe the villas still smell strongly from the smoke on their clothes and such too????? :confused3

I also sympathize with you too. Last March we decided to add 2 days at CSR (pre DVCer's). As soon as we walked in the door we could smell the smoke. It was not overwhelming but with DS and I being allergic to smoke, really eyes swell shut when exposed for too long, and DD, 2, having asthma I notice it under the overwhelming smell of bleach, which I assume was mousekeepings attempt to remove the odor. I immediatley asked to change rooms and it was accommadated but I could still smell it on my clothes for awhile after we left. I did not ask if the people before us had been charged the $500 fee it says they will charge you when you check in but I would hope they would.

People were smoking on the balconies surrounding our SSR balcony in May. While I am a smoker, DH isn't . . . and I observe the rules of the resorts to the letter! I really can't stand people like that - and I will be calling in to front desks in the future to report them - and I hope they get fined!

A friendly reminder that smoking threads are not allowed on the DVC forums.
