I'm trying to decide if we should book DLH or GCH this summer for a 3 night stay in July. We've stayed at the Grand a few times, as well as some Marriott/Sheraton offsite properties. We'll be at the Grand for 5 nights this May and possibly back again for an adults only 2 night stay in Sept.

I have a DD (5) and DS (2.5). I'd like to branch out and try the DLH as I've heard the pool is great, but will we be disappointed with the rooms? The internet reviews aren't very nice... We aren't overly picky, but the cleanliness of a room/bathroom is important...

Is DLH worth it just for the pool? Or will it be too crowded anyway in July...

Note: our points will allow us a Standard view at GCH or a Premium view at DLH...

I've stayed at the Disneyland Hotel twice and it was always very clean. I never had any complaints. However, to me the room just felt a little outdated (I prefer Paradise Pier) but it's a very nice hotel and has an amazing pool. If I were you, I would probably go to the Disneyland Hotel just to try something different. :)

I stayed and DH a few weeks ago and I will not go back to it. It was nothing special at all in any way. I have stayed at Paradise Pier and liked it fine and of course GC is great but very expensive.

I have stayed at the DLH 7 times in the past five years and have a reservation to stay there in October. So I clearly like it very much! I have also stayed at the GCH and the Paradise Pier as well as quite a few places at WDW. GCH is more of a wow factor with the lobby and the rooms have some very nice features the DLH rooms don't (turn down service, nicer linens and toiletries and a balcony). However, I didn't like the pool as much, our room was much smaller and darker and my kids even at 12 and 14 prefer the DLH. I love the grounds, the light, bright room that are spacious and the fact that with each room at the DLH you will either get a daybed or a rollaway. The GCH simply doesn't work for me, my 14 year old son is too tall for the bunk beds and its not acceptable to me that my extra bed might very well be a sleeping bag! Given the age of your kids, I would definitely give the DLH a try. I don't find the rooms as luxurious as the Grand's rooms but we have never had a dirty room (always spotless) in all our stays there. And I find the rooms to still be very nice (maybe on par with a Marriott or Hilton but with those Disney touches and theming). My brother and his wife also prefer the DLH, they have twin girls who are 8 and even though they always stay at very nice places (five star) they prefer the DLH for the room size, theming and atmosphere as well. Their girls miss the Neverland Pool when they stay at the GCH!

And a premium view at the DLH is very nice, you will either have a lovely view of the Neverland Pool or DTD and DL. If you get that one, you will have a wonderful view of the fireworks. The rooms don't have balconies, the only detriment to them in my opinon however they do have sliding doors to allow in fresh air. Again, the DLH isn't as deluxe as the GCH, it wasn't built by Disney so it doesn't have that immersed in theming sort of feel. However, I love the Disney touches throughout the hotel, it has great dining options and lovely grounds. It also has two pools, an arcade and these very cute little jungle cruise remote control boats and lovley koi ponds and waterfalls. So there are lots of things to do and explore around the resort that are very kid friendly.

I stay on points at DLR and find the premium view rooms at the DLH a good deal. I also don't find the walk to Disneyland that much longer from the DLH. Both times we have been at the GCH we have been down long, confusing hallways and the trek down them plus through the lobbies isn't that big of a sell to me. The hotel itself is closer, but your room may not be that much more so. A premium view room at the DLH will put you in one of the two closer towers to DTD and the parks. The walk from the DLH to the parks is around 10 minutes. And at night, following the fireworks, you can easily get on the monorail. From DL, I find the DLH much easier to get back to. From DCA, obviously the GCH is.

You can't make a bad choice but I say give the DLH a try.

I love DLH!! It's my favorite. We stayed at GCH in October for the first time, and my whole family wanted to go back to DLH. I love the rooms, the decor, and the setting of DLH. I thought the GCH was overpriced and more for people who like the idea of The Best, though I did like the location really well. Our room location negated any benefit from that, however. I stayed at DLH in November and had an awesome suite facing DTD. I could watch the fireworks from the room and listen to the music when the slider was open. The room was clean and spacious and the hotel easy to navigate. I would rather pay for a top room at DLH, where I'd spend less than a standard room at GCH. I also think DLH has a much better pool and more things for kids. I like the easy access to the monorail, RFC, and Compass Bookstore for coffee. I did like being near Haagen Daz and La Brea at GCH, I must admit, but our room was such that it took as long to reach those places as it would have from the Dreams Tower at DLH.

If you choose GCH, ask for a room near the lobby and be careful about the balcony with your little ones. From the chairs/table on the deck they can easily climb over the railing.

If you've already done the grand several times, do something different and give the DLH a try! We really liked it when we stayed there, definitely very "disneyish" and the ground are awesome with all the waterfalls and koi ponds :)

It wasn't dirty at all when we were there, I definitely think the rooms are clean! I have heard that it depend on which tower you are in. Maybe worth looking into and seeing which towers are the ones that people are giving negative reviews and requesting a different one?

The OP states that this additional trip will be an adults only trip. :) With an adults only trip I would definitely stay at the GCH. If I had the points (or money) I would do GCH every single time.....seriously. BUT I've never stayed at the DLH so I can't compare the two. I want to, funds just have not yet allowed me to.

Okay I see this now! If it were me, I would switch the May reservation and do the DLH with the kids for that one and then do the GCH for the adults only trip in September. I would really let your kids (the OP's) experience the classic DLH at least once!

I agree with Amy and Dan - change your points to DLH for the one with the kids. Do the GCH for just the 2 of you.

We do points, as well, and we feel we get more of our "money's worth" for them at DLH. It's a better point value - but, we like to occasionally splurge on a lower point season at GCH. Just don't waste the peak seaon points there. (I had to for the holidays this year, but I also booked that 1 week in advanced, too....)

I think my OP was confusing, we have 3 trips planned:
May - family - GCH
July - family -? I'm now leaning towards DLH
Sept - adults - GCH

If we stay at DLH with a premium view, which tower should we request?

Thanks!!

Dreams Tower, DTD view! The pool view is also nice, but I like that one better with kids. DTD gives you a view of the action, some of the theme park things in the background, and can be a good spot for watching the fireworks. If you're on the 7th floor or below, palm trees can sometimes block your fireworks view, though--depends on the room. The concierge lounge is on the 11th floor of the Dreams Tower.

And I am pretty sure a premium view at the DLH on points is always the Dreams Tower. You can request DTD or pool view. Pool view is nice but if you want to watch fireworks from your room, DTD is the way to go. Its also fun to see DTD and DL during the daytime as well.

If I am wrong and a premium view also includes the tower where the lobby is, the Magic Tower then tell them you want Dreams. But I was told by DVC when I made my last reservation that all premium view rooms are in the Dreams. However, it takes more than one cm telling me something to make me thing that is 100% true. HOwever, in three stays at the DLH on points, with a premium view, its been Dreams every time.

I hope you give the DLH a try and that you like it as much as we do!

We stayed in the Magic Tower on DVC points premium view room in August. Our room faced the pool. It didn't have a rollaway or a daybed which was not a problem since there were only three of us. Be sure to leave the drapes open during the day for the pixie dust at night. The pool has lots and lots and lots and lots of chlorine.

If it were me, I would pick DLH so you could try it for yourself. My family loves GC and will not stay at DLH again willingly. That is just us. That is part of the fun of DVC trying new resorts.

Enjoy your trip no matter where you stay!

You have to request a rollaway. They will bring one to you shortly and its a no charge sort of thing. I have only managed to get a daybed room about three of our seven times. But that's fine, my dd prefers the rollaway anyhow! I'll add that rollaways are better for older kids are adults, they are full sized twin beds, whereas the daybeds are better for smaller kids. Even when I got a daybed, I requested a rollaway, my son is too tall for the daybed now anyway. And our rooms have always been large enough that we could fit a rollaway in even if it had daybed.
