gay day at disney

When my daughter was 4 months old we went to P-Town, Cape Cod in October. There was Drag Queen/Transexual Convention going on.
She was fussy at a resturant and the Queens took a shine to her. I let them hold her and she was so happy. The rest of the weekend I would let Drag Queens coo and hold my daughter and she was so happy.
I can't imagine the damage I did to my poor child. Maybe she'll grow up to be a Drag Queen.

have you ever seen those Dateline specials on..."How Clean is Your Hotel Room?"
We saw one of those too. Supposedly the comforters on the beds are the most 'unclean' since they aren't always changed. Does anyone know if Disney changes them between guests? The water glasses and the phone were other things deemed 'unclean'.

We happened to be at WDW during Gay Days in 1997 with our then 5-year-old daughter. Sure, she asked a few questions, but we explained to her that there are all kinds of families, not just ones like ours. We didn't see anything more going on between the gay couples than we did with the straight couples. Sure, there's partying that goes on outside the parks, and sometimes there are a few incidents inside the parks, but for the most part everyone was there having a good time at WDW.

and was also slightly disturbed thinking of what might have been going on in our room/bed the week (or night) before if we stayed immediately following gaydays. :-)

I hate to tell you, but that behavior is not limited to homosexuals. A lot of straight people do it too. That is where all those brain-draining kids com from! ;) Sex is sex, no matter who is putting their tab A into someone else's slot B.

Phillybeth...my thoughts exactly!

I really don't give a thought to the phone or waterclasses when I travel...but maybe you can bring Lysol and your own drinking glasses with you. (I'm not trying to mean...I know alot of people who travel with Lysol..they clean the toilets and any surface that might have not been cleaned that thouroughly)

We always drive so we bring our own pillows...I can't sleep on hotel pillows.

Even if you fly, 1 package of plastic cups don't take up that much room.

::yes:: ::yes:: We spent our Honeymoon in WDW last year....I do hope the people below our room were sound sleepers :teeth:

Our honeymoon week also corresponded with Gay Days....believe me..I was a little timid when I first realized it....but that soon subsided. I promise you that the most unusual or questionable thing I saw that Saturday morning was a line of gentlemen wearing red shirts that said "Tinkerbell".... we chose to visit Seaworld that day to avoid the crowd....rest of the week we didn't even think about it...parks were fine. Overall for that week I think I would have rather seen two men that were in love and happy than some of the hetero teenagers that were tongue swapping. I was a newlywed and didn't even do that! ick

So bottom line: GO HAVE FUN ENJOY YOUR VACATION!

I am also wondering what you mean by "aftermath", doug65?

Im wondering what you mean by your flag decal wont get you into heaven anymore? Thats just silly. I dont think anyone ever thought that. They were just trying to show support!

Surprisingly, one of our best memories is from Gay Days, 1998. Our then 1 year old youngest DD was playing in Mickey's Toontown. She was dancing to the music. Two very nice gentlemen were sitting on the bench watching her. They got up and danced with her and were very, very sweet to her. It was obvious they were with Gay Days, by the t-shirts they were wearing- but in the twighlight, as the older 3 kids rode Goofy's Barnstormer, it was a wonderful sight watching my daughter, (about 18 months old) and these two silly gentlemen dancing to the music and laughing that true belly laugh.

At that point I realized that it is ridiculous to judge others. I might have avoided Gay days, if I knew "ahead of time" that these were the dates. I saw NO unscrumpulous behavior (but we didn't venture to Pleasure Island or other areas where that might be a problem on any night). We did, however, enjoy a quiet moment with an otherwise bored child. She may not remember her moment of belly laughs- but I wish I had remembered to get those gentlemen's names. It is a cherished memory I shall never forget....3 silly people and 1 mom dancing in a hot summer night. Didn't matter what their race, sexual orientation, or political agenda was. All that mattered was that Disney music brought joy. Isn't that what Disney is all about!

....and this from someone who is normally pretty conservative!

The guy I work with is gay and I was surprised that he said that Disney should NOT have an event like gay days (he has been and seen it and there have been some wild looking characters there) so kids are not exposed to this. He is also opposed to gay marriage and gays adopting kids. He says it is not a "normal" lifestyle and kids should not be involved because it is confusing for them. Again, this is his view point.

Like I said before, I was surprised. And he has mentioned stuff like this on more than one occassion.

I went last yr on gay week, the only day that it was bad was the Saturday they had at MK. I know enough not to go but I went anyway just to say I went on Saturday, it was a zoo needless to say I stayed maybe 15 minutes and left, it was a bit much to me what I was seeing and the crowds were the worst I have ever witnessed. :D

Again, this is his view point.

And I imagine it is a fairly lonely view.

I once had a neighbor who truly believed it was perfectly alright to sleep with other women's husbands. She felt that if the wife did not know, no one was getting hurt. She personally did not want any emotional entanglements, so the odd fling with someone unavailable suited her perfectly.

My point being that one person's opinion can be completely off base and should hardly be used by anyone else in making a decision.

:earseek: Yikes! Now that's the neighbor I do not want to have when I get married! :p ;) Of course you know that I'm kidding! Please do not take offense.

Sorry, I have read this 3 times, and still don't get what you're trying to say here. I'm a little dense this morning...I apologize. Could you explain it to me a little bit better. Again, please don't take offense, I just don't get it.

No offense taken at all......heck, when I did get married, I moved far far away from her.

I'm a little dense this morning...

nope, I am probably not explaning it correctly. What I was trying to say, in a nice way, was that you can always find someone to defend any behavior, no matter how off base their argument might be.

That a gay person who says his lifestyle is not "normal" is not representative of the gay view, just as my neighbor was not representative of single women.

So I would not be basing my decision whether to go to Disney that week on a few gay persons saying Disney should not have it.

Wow,
who knew when I posted this thread that I would get such a response. Glad for all of the advice. I imagine we will be going our original 1st through 4th dates for lack of any other available time.

So how about this, regardless of WHO is there, how about the crowds. Our whole point of going at that time is to avoid the crowds when kids are out of school. They say that Gay Days brings in over 100,000 people. Is it terribly crowded the week before that big Saturday?

I've been told (obviously by someone who doesn't know) that gayday at DW was much like the french quarter during Mardi Gras: lots of drunkeness, drug abuse and public sex.

Good thing the straight guys don't know about this. If they caught wind of all the beer and casual sex that's reportedly at Gay Day, they'd start pitching for Straight Day ... ;)

Just another confirmation that Gay Days are no big deal. We always end up going the first week of June and I've never seen any offensive or inappropriate behavior. We always avoid the scheduled park of the day (like the MK on that Saturday) because of the crowd issue.

I've read on other boards too that people just don't want to have to explain to their kids about the same-sex couples, but if I had kids I honestly wouldn't have a problem with that issue. I see gay couples out in public all the time at home-- can't keep the kids inside forever!!! :D

I myself am gay and will be participating during Gay Days. We try everything to be as normal as everyone else. And the mature one's and respectable one's do understand that it is very difficult as well as sometimes unappropriate or even hard for people to explain the different atmosphere to a child. So the most of us do are best to be courtious to this subject.

The following is the actual Gay Day Schedule so you know exactly where the "Bigger Crowds" will be during this time:

Wednesday June 2nd - Pleasure Island - 7pm-2am
Thursday June 3rd - Animal Kingdom - 9am-6pm
Thursday June 3rd - Pleasure Island - 7pm-2am
Friday June 4th - MGM - 9am-9pm
Friday June 4th - Pleasure Island 7pm-2am
Saturday June 5th - "GAY DAY" - Magic Kingdom - 9am-11pm
Saturday June 5th - Pleasure Island 7pm-2am
Sunday June 6th - Epcot - 9am-9pm
Sunday June 6th - Pleasure Island - 7pm-2am

Hope that helps!
Sinny
