I've read that in CA they may be rationing gas soon.
Anyone live through the 70's and long gas lines? Not fun, let me tell you.

They convert to winter blend on November 1st and the state is considering waivers to get through until then. California has a unique situation every spring and fall for a couple months because they switch to summer blend first and winter blend later than most. And of course this year they've had a refinery fire and now a refinery power outage to throw a monkey wrench into their fuel prices.

I personally don't find high gas prices or an economy in free fall funny. But I can deal with the former much more readily than the latter. Your "mileage" may vary.

But the price of gas is often affected by the economy. It was nice to see plummeting gas prices 4 years ago. That is, unless you were one of the 800k people a month losing their jobs or one of the countless more thinking they might be next. I'd much rather be dealing with today's gas prices with over 5 million more new jobs and unemployment down below 8%.

I am pretty sure it is the economy that is being affected by the price of gas.

gas is $3.43 here (NE alabama). i'm surprised gas prices didn't go up this week, since we're about an hour from talladega, and the NASCAR race is this weekend. usually, when NASCAR comes to the area, prices go up at least 10 cents per gallon.

$3.35 yesterday at Sams. It was $3.38 last week.

Usually, I catch the gas as soon as the ticker goes up. So I was glad to see it down from last week.

Well if you don't want to go with the 800k, how bout going with the revised BLS numbers then? The fact is, 4 years ago we were already in a mild recession and were on the slide into a major one that at its worst showed us losing over 600k jobs a month according to the revised BLS figures. However, if you'd like to go with the BLS numbers, you'll also have to accept 114k jobs gained last month, 142k jobs gained the month before and 182 jobs gained before that and 30 straight months of private sector job growth.

As for whether I trust those numbers, well they're the best statistical estimate we have. Revised numbers are better than preliminary of course because more data has come in. As for the BLS cheating the numbers, They're not going to cheat the numbers for anyone because that someone is going to be gone before they are. And if they were to cheat the numbers, well they don't seem to be doing a good job of cheating em for one person or another.

Well our gas was around 3.54/3.56 all week and on my way home from work tonight I saw it is up to 3.79 NE OH

Spoke too soon - that was on the way in this morning. Everything was 20 cents higher when I got off work.

4:15 as on this week. Went to work it was 4.09 and came home to 4.15. Holding steady for the past 3 days.

Since you overseas folks love to join in and tell us your costs, how many times per week do you fill with that $7.62 per gallon gas? How many miles do you drive?

Friday I filled 2 cars up with about $50 each. I'll fill my wife's up with another $50 before the week is up. By the time I get paid again in 2 weeks after filling up this past Friday, I'll fill 4 more tanks of gas. Combined, we put 50,000 miles a year on vehicles. THAT would by why a lot of folks over here complain about $4+ gas. From my median income paycheck, I spend 50% on housing and 30% on gas. That leaves me 20% to pay for everything else including the required 10% they say you should save for retirement. So, with 10% left after not wanting to work when I'm 104 years old, I have to pay electric, phone, heat, insurance, home repair, car repairs, car replacement, clothing, kid's school supplies, everything. Groceries are the only thing that doesn't have to come out of that 10% because my wife solely and only pays for groceries.

That 10% left is about $200/month for the median income folks to pay a general average of $100/month electric bill, $100/month insurance bill, $100/month averaged over a year for heat. So, yeah, gas increasing from $3/gallon last year to $4/gallon this year is quite destructive to the finances of median income folks who don't live in the big city.

Every $1 per gallon difference is about 7% of my paycheck.

That implies it's somehow normal for one couple to drive 50,000 miles a year, which it's certainly not.

For most people, who put say 15,000 miles on a car that gets say 25 miles to the gallon, a dollar more a gallon is $600 a year. It's not nothing but nor is it even remotely close to 7% of anyone's paycheck.

Even if someone drove 50,000 miles a year, at 25mph, that'd be $2000 more a year for $1 increase. If that's 7% of your combined income, you make $35,000 a year, combined. Possible, but seems quite low for two people.
