gas prices could reach $4 here...

Rog - please tell me you still have the Cushman covered up in the back of your garage.

I really wish I did!!!....It was such a well built piece of machinery...and an american classic!!! I sold it to my brother for the price I paid....he sanded some of the rust off of the engine, upholstered the seat, and kryloned it...got twice what he gave me for it!:headache:

I found a picture of Rog in drag on his Cushman

If I didn't need a truck that could pull a 10,000 lb 5er, I'd be driving a Mini Cooper and getting 30 mpg. They have been advertising the SUV hybrids here for a few months. My old Explorer had a higher tow rating.

When I was younger (much younger) we had a 1982 Nissan Sentra, 4 cylinder with 2 barrel carb, very low tech. Without all the emissions controls that thing got 50 mpg. Why can't they make them like that now? Course, you would have a hard time towing the travel trailer with one, but it was great, reliable transportation at the time.

Once diesel settled in higher than gasoline about 2 years ago I broke down and bought car to commute in. I picked up a used Saturn that gets me 30 mpg on my daily 40 mile RT commute. I figure it will also let me keep the truck a number of years longer since I am no longer putting those miles on it. Even with the extra cost for insurance for the extra car I'm still saving over $1000/year because of the difference in mileage and fuel costs.

wow...I just browsed through ebay to see what year the little cushman I had might have been....still not sure exactly, but it was apparently already an antique when i had it in the early 90s(looks like they stopped making them in the mid 60s)...I bought and sold that thing for $200, I think my brother got about $500 for it....their aint one on ebay for less than 1500.......and most "arent currently running"..........jeez, I could kick myself!!!

One of my staff just did this last week. Parked her husbands F250 and bought a used Saturn...
I'm seriously considering it. Even if I bought an old beater and had maintenance issues, it would be better than $100 a week in diesel. I have a 60 mile round trip commute to the hospital everyday. I can get about a week out a tank of fuel and I filled up yesterday for $98... A year ago it was around $65.

I know what you mean. My last truck was a 02 F250 with the 7.3 diesel. I had it mod'ed up to 50% more power than stock (810 lb/ft of torque) and it still gave me 16-17 mpg solo and 10-11 towing at 75-80. My new 08 F250 is completely stock but with all the new diesel emissions. It makes 650 lb/ft of torque, is noticably weaker than the 02 and gets 13 mpg solo and 8-9 towing at 70-75. I'll be glad when they work out the emissions a little better and give me my mileage back.

Back in the mid to late 80's I used to drive a little Isuzu pickup with a small Diesel for work. The body was crap but that little thing got over 50 mpg. We used to joke that it went from 0 to 60 in just over 3 days flat. Odd thing is though, when it was towing a heavy load, like a large construction type air compressor it still accelerated about the same. It was a great little workhorse.
