Garter for prom....

Yes, many prom goers may be wearing thongs so that they do not have pantylines etc. But I am hoping they are not decorated with lace and feathers and have PROM 2008 on them and are not given to the young man to wear on his arm or hang in his rear view mirror......;) Just kidding. As I op I just have never heard or seen this. If it is a tradition and it is like the corsage...saved as a keepsake it is cute. It just seemed like it was a symbol...wearing the garter sort of like..hey look what I have....didnt mean to stir up trouble.

My sister had garters as a favor at her prom (1986?)

I had a wine glass (1988)-- I'm not sure what is better a garter or wine glasses :confused3

The garters were just in cars and armbands no ceremony type thing.

I went to Prom in 85, 86 & 87....I had a garter all three years and no....I wasn't "social girl". It was just as common as having your flowers and his boutineer (sp?) Now, some girls wore it higher than others....:scared1: but my friends and I had ours just above our knee. The guys would take it off and put it on their arm....I guess it was cool in the pictures.

Oh my!!! I am laughing so hard at "Prom Thong" but I know DH would not be at all!!!!:rotfl: We were looking up prom flowers to try to get an idea for boutonnieres (Spelling??) they have the strangest flowers. Look here

leg flower tattoos???? I am OLD!!!!!!!I had a little nosegay and thought it was the most beautiful , romantic thing!!

I actually like most of those... it sure beats the grandma looking things that I had!

I graduated HS in 2000 and I have never heard about this. It does sound like an odd tradition, but to each his own.

Ok DD went and picked up her prom dress. While we are there they have many prom garters on sale...different colors etc. They were very pretty lace, with PROM 2008 on them. I asked the lady who was helping us about them :confused3 I mean I have seen garters at a wedding but Prom. She said that the girls were buying them to give to their boyfriends. The boys wear them on their arms like armbands. She said the boys put them in their cars etc.....Has anyone ever heard of this?? I thought it sort of sounded like a weird status symbol. I have never ever heard of this.....

Most of the guys from our high school hung them on their rear view mirrors. It was supposed to make them look cool like they scored, but 99% of them the girl just handed it to them.

That was back in 97'

Geez-never heard of the prom garter. Graduated in '85. But then again, I think the garter is even trashy at a wedding. :rolleyes1 Didn't do it at mine.
But hey, to each their own. Just glad I don't have daughters!!:scared1:

Ok. I haven't been living under a rock, but, I graduated in 1984 & have NEVER heard of prom favors OR prom garters. :confused3

Really? I graduated in 85 and we didn't do the garters but when we left the prom we got a wine glass as a favor with the date and the prom theme etched on it. I went to 4 different proms and they gave out glasses at all of them. Guess it depends on where you live.

Graduated in 97'

Girls wore prom garters on their upper thighs and the dates took them off during a PLANNED ceremony at the prom where all the chaperones watched and all the parents who attended watched also.:rolleyes1

I did go to an extremely rural high school and lived in the sticks, so maybe it's something only white trash does(honestly, I'm wondering:confused3 )

The parents on the DIS seem to be smarter than some of the parents I was around growing up.

More power to you guys for paying attention to your kids, so many didn't when I was in school.

By the way, my date and I were friends, and I sat out the ceremony.

I graduated in 1987 and it was used as a prom favor along with the wine glass and the guys usually hung the garters from their rear view mirror. Like someone else mentioned - we used to hang the tassels from our graduation cap on the mirror as well - but haven't seen either in a long time.

On another note, some women at work were talking about how in their time (early 1960's) - guys used to hang baby shoes in their rear view mirror if they were serious about a girl. Never heard of that.

84 also we wore garters & got favors-Beer Mugs & Wine Glasses. The Favor were considered a gift from the Jr class to the seniors.

Must be a regional thing - I graduated from high school in 1979 (:scared1: ....can't believe I just spilled that), and we had prom garters way back then. They were just a favor - no stripping involved. :worship: Thank goodness - I have SEEN my prom pictures.....what was I thinking!:lmao:

I attended proms in Boulder in '90 and '91. Garters were not an official favour but just about every girl had one in colros to match her dress and yeah we all gave them to our dates. Most of us wore them right above our knees and just about everyone had the guy (yep, even just a friend) take it off at the prom. Didn't seem to phase the chaperones at all. We never thought much of it--it was just what everyoen did. Like someone else said--the girls dried and saved their corsages and the guys saevd the garters:rotfl:

My dd went to Prom and did not have a garter. I never heard of having a "Prom Garter" either. I graduated HS in 1983.

My prom did the garter. I've never heard of the gift thing.

It would have been extremely difficult to do a gift. We have a senior prom (no underclassmen unless asked by a senior). And it's for the 4 high schools in my city, meaning my prom had over 600 people at it.

My date had one in 1987. I know a long time ago.

But everyone who is saying "it's sending the wrong message" - what about wine glasses with the prom date on them? Isn't that really 'sending the wrong message' also?

what message do you think it sends out, leads to sex? here is a clue, no one I know has needed a garter to think about or to have sex.
