Garage Sale woes....

I don't have a problem with haggling. I can always counter or say no.

Also don't care what they do with it after they buy it. Why would I care if they want to take the time and risk to try to resell it? I got what I wanted for it.

I've also given things away to friends and they've asked if I mind if they sell it. I honestly don't mind! Once it's left me it's no longer mine. I could have sold it myself, but chose not to. If someone else chooses to, that's their business, not mine.

My inlaws supplement their income off of buying at garage sales and reselling on ebay. My FIL has two semi trucks full of "junk" that he has stock piled, thats for when he retires. He is a haggler and very good at knowing what will sell and what wont. They do have jobs, but its a contract and not stable, so they have this as their back up. I laugh at the junk they have compiled, but then Im the one laughing when they sold money for a trip and raised $1500 in a week I have to say going to sales with them is enlightening. One upside, if Im in the market for anything, I let them know and usually by the next time I see it, its been found for me.

My mom's neighborhood had a sale last month and we took some stuff over for that, sold a decent amount. We had one lady and her granddaughter stop by and the little girl bought a pair of shoes for $1, then returned a few minutes later and asked to return them because her grandma didn't like them. We did not allow the return as the grandmother had been with her when she was looking at them and given the little girl the money so the little girl ran down the sidewalk and gave the bag to her grandmother who then yelled at her and shook her fist, then dumped the shoes out of the bag in the neighbor's yard, kept the bag and went on her way. Everyone at our sale was wondering if they had really seen that, it was very strange. Anyway, my niece ran down to the neighbor's and picked up the shoes, which then sold again a short time later. You just never know what you will see.

If it had been me, I would've just given her the $1.00 back. Just saying'.....

I am a hardcore Thrift Store & Garage Sale shopper. We've also had a ton of sales over the years. That is pretty much the only reason my kids have tons of toys, will never want for books......EVER!!!! lol.......and namebrand clothing. I am a single mom, with 6 kids, who are outgrowing things everytime I turn around. Heck, over half of our Disney Souveniers(sp?) that we are taking on our trip, have come from the local goodwills. Light Spinners for 99cents, or spend $20 one one at the parks? And yes, I have bought used undies for my kids at garage sales. Wash them in hot water before they wear them of course. I've worked in several retail stores in the past- you don't think people try on swimsuits, underwear, or bras there, and not buy them?

I think many people bring light up toys and such and even stuffed animals and Tshirts from home that they find for much better prices when they are on a tight budget. Kids see the other kids at the parade with light up toys and want something so parents have learned thru this board to come prepared because those items are costly. And many bring stuffed animals, shirts, and other items from home and have 'Tinkerbell' leave them in their hotel room for their kids to find upon return from the park instead of having to buy 'costly' items within the parks. Maybe this is what the other poster is referring to...not sure, but maybe?

I have NEVER brought a child home with more than the clothes on their backs. One time the shelter wouldn't allow the shoes to leave the shelter and I brought a child home without any shoes. I always try to buy them a suitcase, because they live out of brown paper bags, or Wal Mart plastic bags,so for any of you who would like to make a tax deduction, contact your local DHS to find a non profit that provides for foster children.
I also buy for other in need children and families. If I have the money, I love to buy for others who may not have things that I can get at garage sales, and they are very proud to get them!!

Most of our kids stuff went directly to the Family Services temporary shelter that serves kids between getting taken from the home and getting placed with a foster family. Kids often arrive at the shelter wearing only their jammies.

OT ..our women's group collects go bags for foster kids to be sent with them when they go to a home..a suitcase, toiletries, undies, pajamas, books a toy or two, other new clothes, a blanket they can call their own, etc. Good project I think.

This! One woman put 5 of my Dooney and Bourke hand bags on her arm and stated I'll give you $10.00! I told HER ARE U KIDDING ME! NO! They are $15.00 a piece, she then threw them down. UGH~~~ Yes people are rude. If you want to sell something for a $1.00 they ask you if you would take .50 cents.! RUDE! I did have a few asian women buy my coach purse's for $30.00 each.

Why in the world would you even TRY to sell D&B hand bags at a yard sale? Yard sales usually mean "cheap" prices and that's what people are looking for - just like the OP's $50 shoes. These are the types of things you either sell on ebay or craigslist. I have yard sales every few years, and don't usually have any issues. People in general in this area are well behaved, but I make sure my dh is very visible, for obvious reasons. I never put out really expensive items, and end up selling almost everything.
I always make money and it gives me incentives to clean closets,etc.
The $$'s I make are "mad" money too, and goes toward my Disney vacation fix

We had a successful sale in June. We wound up making just short of $700. We had excellent prices and haggled with people, but honestly the 3 or 4 rude people put a damper on the entire experience. I guess they are the ones you remember.

But I have to say by being involved in sorting/pricing/organizing for the sale our DS might have learned a lot! We gave the cash to DS to hold for our vacation to the WI Dells and used it as our fun fund. It bought all sorts of FUN activities and very few souveneirs. I am hoping he is learning that experiences trump things.

And as for brining souveneirs to WDW, I did that! Bought new pajamas, light up toys, new t-shirts and new Disney themed swimsuits all hidden in DS's suitcase. Each day of our vacation he had something new all of which I had bought on clearance and squirreled away. It made dragging a 6 yo through all the souveneir store ride exits a breeze!

I don't know what your local rules are but here we are not allowed to sell "homemade" baked items for profit unless you have a liscensed kitchen (charities are an exception to this rule).

I mean no disrespect just trying to give people a heads up to check their local rules and regs before selling these items.

Everyone does it in the area we live in - no one has ever said anything about it. It's just a customary thing to do. Think from what I see from that pp we may be from the same area.

My last yard sale was last summer when DH was deployed. Our community has a huge sale every memorial day weekend so I thought I would participate and make some extra money. I spent probably 10 hours getting everything ready with prices and setting up. I put up a HUGE sign that said "NO HAGGLING-PRICE AS IS OR WALK AWAY!" I hate haggling with people. My mindset is that if you don't want it for the price I am selling, then I will keep it or give it to charity. Even with the sign I had at least 10 people offer me significantly lower prices than I had marked. I smiled and pointed to my sign and they usually walked away.

I made about $500 and still had some items left over, but to me, the setting up and tearing down and annoying people is sooo not worth it.
