Garage Sale woes....

I had a great idea...

Make up a large sign and display it out front

"No Haggle pricing, the price you see is the price you pay"
"Today only, we pay the sales tax"
"All items are priced, questions are $5"

I don't haggle, I price items for the prices I feel they are worth, if they don't sell then I will donate them but I don't haggle. I also don't haggle if I'm the buyer, I think it's rude to do so, I know others feel differently but that is how I personally feel.

spirit, I like your sign "all items are prices, questions are $5" LOL :)

Ha! I wish I had room to display everything. But I unfortunatly cant. I do however sell the majority of my stuff to make a profit. I am also a he, not a she. I know its odd for a guy to love yardsales but I DO! :goodvibes This is actually my 'job'. One mans garbage is another mans bills, car payments and food!

I was a preschool teacher for 5 years and I figured I liked dealing with Disney stuff more then dirty diapers and screaming :rotfl2:

Yup, I've been selling kids stuff & baby gear on an online local group... I've posted items like a $150 pack and play used 2 times, for $25. And people would ask to lower the price to $10 and ask if I could deliver it since their car is in the shop... Grrr!!! Next please!

Where do people get all of this stuff to sell anyway?QUOTE]

No offense intended. I got a chuckle from your screen name and your question.

After my mother died we discovered dozens of unopened bags of clothing, inexpensive jewelry, housewares, and other items, all from QVC. We didn't have a garage sale, but some family members took a few few things and the rest was donated.

You won't catch me selling used boxer shorts. I wear mine until they're literally falling apart.

I don't know why, but for some reason it bugs me when people are looking for stuff at yardsales to resale. :confused3

Also gets me that people are willing to pay Goodwill prices, but not that same price at a yard sale. And people snatch stuff up at the local mom club sales, but the same item at a yard sale just sits. Weird?

I also get tired of a certain group allowing their young boys to pee in the yard.

And the lady who wanted to pay 50 cent for two brand new button up shirts because it would cost her right much to mail them. Not my problem, lady.

Is there a yard sale therapy group???

Talk about mentally ill.

Your post reminded me of a lady who complained about our sign. We had one with an arrow that indicated "straight ahead." She said the arrow meant she was supposed to go up in the air.

I work there. I'm sorry about your mom, I hear that a lot. Many older folks watch it religiously and buy a good amount because they become attached to the hosts. It's a nice company, but I do feel for you.

Why would you care what they are doing with it after the sale?

I'm willing to pay more shopping Goodwill b/c it is a lot less work than yard sales, because it's all in the same place from a lot of different households. It is also a charitable organization- the profits go to helping train developmentally disabled people get a job.

Beats me. :upsidedow

Even the yard sales that are for churches or the marching band still have people who want to pay next to nothing. I guess it is a mindset type of situation.

At yard sales (not only do I have them, but I also go to them), the same people always try to pay less than the sticker price.

There is one lady who always wants to buy my books for a quarter - she has a book scanner that tells her what they are worth and never wants to pay anything for them! She told me one time a year ago that $3 for a $25 travel book was way too much (it was a 2011 guide to Las Vegas).

Our sale is tomorrow, and we somewhat set up. In the morning, I will wake up DS(15) and have him help me put stuff on tables (it is all in a pile in the front yard, covered by a tarp) and help out with the sale. My kindle is charging, so he can play Angry Birds when his help is not needed.

Weather is supposed to be GORGEOUS tomorrow! Mid 70's and SUN!
:beach:

I have a cooler with cold beverages (put them in there already with half the ice to get them nice and cold for tomorrow) and made cookies, chocolate cupcakes and muffins to sell also. Any money from the foodstuffs goes towards our "fun" (aka : arcade and gift shop) spending money for GWL in a couple of weeks.

I have a feeling it is going to be a money making day! Fingers crossed!

Thanks. My mom did like to watch QVC a lot. In addition to the unopened items, she DID wear/use many of her purchases. I know she had a few favorite hosts.

I myself like watching the makeup artist Laura Geller for some odd reason. My wife buys some clothing and this very laptop I'm using was purchased from QVC right before Christmas.

I must say, I have been to more than my share of yard sales and estate sales. In CA, I would often find many items that were fun, unusual and a variety of prices.

In CO, there didn't seem to be as many sales, where I was anyway. When I had a sale, everything sold out in about 1 hour. It was surprising to say the least.

Now I am in TX. I have never had a yard sale here, but have gone to some. All I can say, is that I am shocked at the HIGH prices for junk here. I went to a sale a couple of weeks ago and there wer old rubbermaid and tupperware containers. They were not in good shape, had no lids and were priced at $3 each. No thanks.

When I go to look for clothes for my grandsons, the t shirts are often marked at $5-9 and jeans are 7-10. Goodwill here is also really expensive!! I do like their 1.2 price day though!

I don't understand this either. Yard sales are like wholesale for resellers :) As for Goodwill..I hate ours and won't pay their prices..many times they outprice the retail price, plus the people working there are awful. I like the local charity driven thrift stores.

Our city has an online FB gargae sale. People post photos and then people buy and pick up. People line up if they want the item. Our town has 12 groups! Kids, baby, adult clothes, household, outdoor, computer, and who knows what else. I am just in household. Maybe do a search. Our group is very active.

it takes me working 40 hours to make $500. If I could do that in one day AND clean out my house in the process, I'd be glad.

Oooo, I'm jealous of the guy that went to the biggest sale... that sounds like FUN! If I get a Thursday or Friday off, I will make a list of sales (usually 12-15 total) and pack up the kids with drinks, snacks & games and off we go. I use my GPS to pinpoint me right to wear I need to go and I usually find some great deals!

Our Goodwill is way too overpriced. We have another thrift shop that I frequent but it's usually pretty picked over. I do donate a lot as well which helps with taxes but it's always nice to get cash for some of the nicer things. Our city has a facebook page for selling/buying... I've been using that for the last few months and probably made a few hundred dollars from it. I've also spent a few hundred most likely...

When my mom passed away we had to get rid of everything she had. Since I love having sales, I was in charge of it all. She had Christmas presents bought for the next 3 years for EVERYONE! My daughter was only 1 and she had 3T clothes for her put away. She was notorious for the big toaster Christmas of '06. Toasters were on sale for $5 so everyone got one. lol... we had family go through it all and pick out what they wanted then we had a massive sale with the rest. Everything leftover was donated. Since I did most of the work my dad bought me my DSLR with the money we made. Those are my mom's eyes now

I agree w/ not pricing everything. You can have a .25 cent table or $5 table or whatever, but since people want to haggle you're not going to get what you ask for anyway. The whole point is to get rid of stuff you don't want so if they pay .10 instead of .25...whatever. I'd be hauling it to the dump if they didn't buy it. People spend way too much time sitting around at their garage sales...the people who are going to buy are there early. I start at 7 am and close up by noon. No way would I drag it out over two days. As for being invested in what something originally cost...who cares? It is my mistake if I spent a lot on something I didn't use, not the garage sale shopper's issue.

I agree with what everyone is saying about sales. I enjoy going to them.

last sale I had was a moving sale. 98% of the items I was selling was furniture. We were moving from a 5 bedroom house to a 3 bedroom house. I had a brand-new set of bunkbeds without mattresses. Never used selling for $75 (new $200). A man said I was charging too much,he said he would be generous and buy them from me for $50 if I went and got the mattresses for them. I said no. Waited about an hour, a lady came in and bought them paying the full price. She didn't even ask about the price.

Not always. Not everyone is just trying to get rid of stuff; you just never know what's on the other end. It could be someone trying to "sell their toys" as Dave Ramsey calls it to buy groceries, pay for a school field trip, pay medical bills, etc.
