I feel like I'm seeing this term everywhere this year! I even went to a "Galentine's" gift sales party / happy hour today. Is this really a big thing? I never got my ex anything, I certainly never got my friends anything.

I never heard of it, what does it mean

I don't buy my friends anything but I think it's just a gimmick to get people in the stores. Galentine's Day is about friendships, not presents.

As the name would suggest, Galentine's Day is a celebration of female friendship. The term was popularised following the release of a 2010 episode of US sitcom Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, explains its meaning while throwing an annual Galentine's Day bash for her friends.

Put right there with Festivus :rotfl2:

A lot of single 20 & 30-somethings celebrate it. For women who delay serious relationships and marriage while they concentrate on furthering their careers and/or attend grad school or just haven't found their significant other, this is actually a popular way to enjoy Valentine's Day. Long before Galentine's Day was named, I remember one Valentine's Day that I was between boyfriends when I celebrated with my girlfriends. I don't recall exchanging gifts, but there was plenty of chocolate and pink champagne to go around.

I LOVE Galentine's Day, because it's a day to celebrate friendship and the people who support & love you, which is especially important this year, IMO.

I'm in the process of putting together packages to mail to the people who have supported me over the last year of quarantine and will mail them on Monday. :) Not all of them are women.

And FWIW, I'm a married woman in my 40s. I will celebrate Valentines Day with DH and then family on the 14th.

I can't stand the phrase- I cringe every time I see it. I have no problem with the concept of celebrating female friendship, I think that's great. I realize this is an alternative to Valentine's Day, which I find ridiculous anyway :confused3 Yes I'm married and my husband and I don't participate. You can keep the roses and the jewelry, I'll just take the candy. Just not on Valentine's Day, lol.

Weird holiday, I tell DH Valentines is a day for guys who screw up all year to make it up to their SO with a big show and since he does the right thing all year he's off the hook.

DD is planning on doing Galentines with masks and all, two friends I think. Personally, I suspect the camaraderie prevents bad bottom of the barrel reach decisions so I'm all for it. It's empowering to think this new generation of women won't say yes to a crummy date with a icky human because it's February.

I'm not single.and I've celebrated Galentine's Day a couple of times. It's really just an excuse to get together. One year we did crafts and drank wine and snacked. Last year we went to a cooking class which was fabulous. No gift exchanging or cards involved.
