GAD - Haiti Care Kits

Shipping was around $15/box.

Thanks. Good to know in advance what the potential cost could be. For anyone still looking for toothpaste, I ordered from minimus.biz and got all of them for around $21 and that included free shipping. That was for the Crest without the box. They had a cheaper brand but if you ordered less than $20 the shipping was like $18!:scared1:

My kits didn't fit in any of the flat rate boxes (10 / box), so I put them all (20) in 1 regular carboard box I had laying around the house and sent it the "cheapest way" (what I told the gal at the post office) which ended up costing about $12. I just marked clearly on the box "20 KITS."

Thanks for sharing the shipping information. I was worried about not being about to use the flat rate boxes, but glad to hear that it won't be a problem.

This did end up to be more expensive than I originally thought, though I had some of the items already (toothbrushes, soap, etc.) on hand from stocking up on rebates or freebies, so that helped. This also allowed my youngest - who isn't quite 6 yet - to participate. That way our entire family got to work on the project and no one was left out. Only my oldest really understands what went on in Haiti, but all of them got the idea that we were helping someone who didn't have these things that we always have in our home. In the end it was worth it for us.

Does anyone have the address to send the Haiti care kits. I'm signed up but can't find the address. I have the products just need to send them.

I travel around 200 nights a year on business and have Diamond Status at Hilton and Platinum Status at Sheraton.

When we were doing the kits, I was staying at a Hilton that I stay quit frequently (twice a month for the past 5 years). I mentioned to the manger who I know well what we were working on.

He had the housekeeping director help me out with a few items. I got all most of the combs I needed and about 30 toothpaste and all the tooth brushes.

Later that I day I was driving to a see a client in the backwoods of South Carolina and passed a remnants shop that offered discounted sheets and linens. I went in and found wash clothes at 6 for a $1 and hand towels 2 for a $1. The next night I was in a Sheraton in Charleston and asked the manager for a few items. No sweat he replied and he gave me 100 bottles of shampoos and 144 bars of soap. We wound up putting 2 soaps and shampoos in each kit.

Shipping was insane as 60 kits / 6 boxes ran $102.50 to ship. We spent another $128 on the items we needed (toothpaste for a $1.29 for 30 more boxes was the highest) for a total of $230.50 for 60 kits or 3.80 cents apiece. It would have been easily $7 without the kind donations.

When we made the boxes with the notes we also sent notes of thanks to the hotels and the corporate headquarters of Sheraton and Hilton.

Like many I would have rather gotten my hands dirty and had the kids do real manual labor. But we tried for 2 months to volunteer locally and could not find a place that would respond and / or take a 7 and 9 year old.

Still a great cause and hopefully the kits will help people.
