I didn't realize it was regional - I thought it more of an older term. My grandmother used to call them sneakers. She was from the Northeast though. Or Grandpa Simpson:
It's not so uncommon a phrase that you don't hear it. I never realize my family in New England favored the term sneakers - or, really "Sneak-ahs" I should say!
Grew up in NJ & DE, went to school in VA & live in MD - we've always called them and always heard them referred to as sneakers as well. My boys wore tennis shoes - for playing tennis! They weren't their regular sneakers though.
Wonder who comes up with some of this stuff sometimes!
The worst one for me of the above pics was climbing that stupid rope in PE. I was the only one in class who couldn't climb the darn thing. I was always the last one to do the rope because the teacher knew I'd take all day to get a foot off the ground, LOL.
