Did you open a "wallet" that required you to give a credit card? If not, I would love to know how to do that.
The android implementation requires Gpay, which is google's wallet. The only thing in my wallet is the
DVC membership card. I showed her the "details" of the DVC membership card in the Gpay wallet, which showed "DVC Y". She gave me the discount, and I paid with a magic band.
I think it's incredibly stupid to not implement the discount by swiping the magic band, and instead having to use a third party app, linked to from
MDE, to show that you are discount eligible. But, this is Disney IT. The meeting where the decision was made probably went like this:
Disney exec: People are getting DVC discounts that aren't eligible.
DVC exec: We issue them cards. It's your CMs who are doing it.
Disney exec: Your cards are good for 5 years, so people who are not longer DVC members are getting the discount. Can't you come up with some way to verify the card?
DVC exec: How about you change your point of sale terminals to recognize DVC discounts when a magic band is used for payment?
Disney IT: That would cost a billion dollars and wouldn't be done in our lifetimes.
DVC exec: We can issue everyone a new plastic card with an NFC chip in it. You can scan it for the discount, do a back end lookup, and know if they are eligible.
Disney IT: That would require adding a new option to the scanners, a new webservice, and some middleware. We might be able to do that for half a billion dollars, but it still wouldn't be done in our lifetimes.
DVC exec: What would you suggest?
Disney IT: I can have my app guy connect to wallet services and produce a QR or bar code. The POS can scan that just like a regular product and give the discount.
DVC exec: That sounds good, but what about the people without smart phones?
Disney IT: Do you know anyone without a smart phone? I don't.
DVC exec: We have some members without smart phones, for sure.
Disney exec: They can use the MDE website and show their card on their smart phone. Oh... They can print the card from the website and just show that.
DVC exec: Ok, how long until this happens?
Disney IT: We need to reprogram the point of sale, so a year?
DVC exec: Our cards expire in 6 months.
Disney IT: We can put the eligibility for discounts into the wallet, and people can show the details to the CM to get the discount.
Disney exec: Perfect
DVC exec: But isn't this a mess for our members?
Disney IT: I'm not sure we can be done in 6 months.
Disney exec: It's a perfect solution. Let's move on. You'll figure it out together.
