A relative died suddenly yesterday and we've been told that the funeral is going to be on Sunday.

I've never heard of a funeral or a wedding being held on a Sunday.
Is that unusual or have I just not gone to enough of those events to have attended one on that day of the week?

Oh Gosh how terrible of me!! I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your relative!! Please do forgive me!

Not terrible of you at all and no forgiveness needed! I hadn't shared about it on the DIS until now....LOL

Scary part is, it was meningitis. He went so suddenly and with all the stress in his life we all figured it would have been a heart attack, the poor guy.

But the Sunday service thing is different, isn't it?

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I have been to wakes on Sunday but never the actual Funeral Service.

My parents have mentioned to me that Sunday funerals used to be very common. They are still not unusual in rural areas of the south, but I'm sure a lot less common they used to be.

Sorry for your loss....

So sorry to hear of your loss.
I've never heard of a Sunday funeral either.

Sundays in the Christian faith: no Funerals but other religions do as Sunday is not their Holy day

I was at a Sunday church wedding just last week

I think the reason is the cost, most places charge extra for a Sunday service. As for a wedding, I have been to several church weddings on Sunday, I think its because people want to party at the recieption and really don't want to get up early the next day. If you are having a church wedding with just cake and punch, people don't need to worry about getting up the next morning so they sometimes have them on a Sunday.

i'm sorry for your loss. :(

i have never been to a funeral on a sunday, but i have been to many weddings on sundays. we went to a wedding just recently on the sunday before labor day.

Okay maybe this makes me strange but I have been to lots of funerals on Sundays but no weddings. I do live in the South although not the rural south and it isn't uncommon to have a 2:00 funeral on Sunday. especially for older people where there might not be a lot of family.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I have never been to or even heard of a Sunday funeral. I have however been to Sunday weddings.

I live in a rural area of Georgia. Sundays are the most popular day of the week for funerals in this area. More people will attend as they are already in their 'Sunday' clothes- most people attend church in my community. However, I have never heard of a Sunday wedding in this area.

Sorry for your loss...my Mom had Meningitis last December but she recovered from that (altho we came close to losing her then)...of course the cancer took her life this summer but Meningitis is very scary. Since Mom lived with us, my kids had to be tested for Meningitis & it was the county that called us to inform us!

Anyway, no I have never heard of a Sunday funeral here in Michigan but I'm sure they happen.

So sorry for the loss of your relative. :(

I've never heard of/been to a funeral on a Sunday, but I've been to several weddings on Sunday. 99% of my DH's relatives are Mennonite and they always have weddings on Sunday morning.

I have never been to a Sunday wedding, but at least the last two funerals I can remember took place on a Sunday. One was in Indy and one in Orlando so I can not comment on it being just a southern tradition, also both were of seperate denominations of the Christian faith.

I have been to a Friday funeral and a Sunday wedding. It is all a matter of money. I know to have the funeral on Sat, the price would have gone up $2500. My freinds wedding was on a Sun. since Sat would have been considerably more expensive.

So sorry to hear about your loss.

Ive never heard of a Sunday funeral but have heard of Sunday wakes and weddings. In fact the last wedding we went to was on a Sunday with a full dinner and reception that went until well after 10:00pm. DH took the following day off, and we needed it. ;)

My dad (a semi-retired United Methodist Minister) is officiating at a funeral this Sunday. He and my mom were supposed to drive up to our home for a visit, but dad was called into service at the last minute.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I have never been to a Sunday funeral or a Sunday wedding. As far as I know, there are no Sunday funerals around here. They have to pay an overtime fee for everything on Saturday. I don't know what they would have to pay to have the funeral home, and the cemetery open for them on Sunday. We do have lots of wakes though on Sunday, with funerals on Monday.
