Fun poll: If something falls on the floor..WWYD?

Would you eat it anyway?

  • Yes, but only if I immediately picked it up

  • Yes, but only if it was a dry food (not a porous, wet food like shrimp)

  • Always, I wouldn't want to waste money

  • Nope, never, how gross!

  • Depends on how recently I (or my SO) washed the floors

  • Other- I plead the fifth!

It depends... is it MY floor? If so, yes. It could have been sitting there for hours and I would probably still eat it. (I'm really crazy when it comes to keeping my floors clean...)

Any other floor, oh, heck no!

My floor or my mom's, yes. Somewhere else, no.

Funny story....a couple Christmases ago I made Tirimasu in a springform pan to take to mom's. I go to put it in her fridge, and you guessed it! I hit the lever and the pan opens up and Tirimasu falls on the floor! I put what was left on the pan in the fridge and scooped up the rest from the floor to throw away. Everyone comes in and says it looks good anyway and procede to scarf it down. Hey, I guess they figure Grandma's floor is ok too, and I will never make Tirimasu for a party again! (at least in that pan!)

I am a firm believer in the 5 second rule, but it kind of depends upon where I am, how recently I have cleaned the floor, and what the food is. And you know what? I'm one of those people who rarely gets sick, so it probably has a role in building my immune system since I am not constantly shying away from a little dirt / germs.

Yep I would eat anything that fell on the floor, unless the dog gets to it first. People are way to germ phobic anymore.
And believe me my floors are far from being spotless.

There are probably far more germs in your mouth than that pacifier picked up in a few moments on the floor. I would never put it in my mouth and then give it to them. I would just pick it up and unless it looked dirty they got it back.
My kids chewed on toys that had been on the airplane floor and it never did them a bit of harm.

What amazes me is the amount of people that give their infants their keys to play with. It you won't eat something that has hit the floor, why in the world would you let you infant teethe on your dirty keys.

Or the pacifier (or bottle) drops on the floor; they wipe it on their shirt and give it back.

When I was pregnant with my son, I got DH a father to be type of book, one of my favorite quotes from the book is:

"When our first baby would drop his paci on the floor, we would wash and santize it before we would give it back, with the second baby we would wipe it on our shirt, with the third baby, we just kick it back."

My poor son is my "third baby", just this morning he ate his ceral off the floor. I did pick the grapes back up and rinse them off again before I let him eat those. That said, when we had dogs, no way would I let him or anybody else eat anything off the floor. But now we are dog free and we don't wear shoes in the house, we also have all hardwood floors in the living area that get swept pretty much on a daily basis.

Its not dirty unless it hits the floor a second time or a dog grabs it first.

I follow the who gets there first has the prize rule, but just shout sit if the dog is going for it though.

:rotfl2:

Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant goes by the 5-second rule;) Trust me, if you eat out at all, anything you eat off a relatively clean kitchen floor will rival what you often get while dining out.

I saw a man and his son at WDW walking around MK and the little boy had a bag of cookies. He dropped one and the dad bent over and said "5 second rule!!" and ate it.... right off the ground at WDW!! EEEWWWW!!!! I know they clean every night, but man the ground is still very nasty!! I just stood there with my mouth hanging open.

Depends on the status of the floor.. but most likely, I'll eat it if it's dry food. :)

Depends on how good that cookie was! As long as it didn't fall in something wet, I would brush it off and eat it.

Mythbusters did tests on the 5 second rule...they found it didn't matter if it was 5 seconds or less, it still had just as many germs and bacteria than if they waited longer to pick it up.

At my house, I wouldn't think twice about picking something up off the floor and eating it. If I was out in public, it would go right in the trash.

You bet I would. Especially with as expensive as things are at Disney it would be getting eaten.

Actually have been there done that. My DS dropped his sandwich and no way was I paying for another one and no way was I standing in another line.

Oh well....I'll still risk it!

We fully enforce the 5 second rule here. You do get a stare down from the dog, but as long as it's not something that dirt/hair can adhere to, brush it off and keep it moving!
