Backstory...bear with me...it is pertinent...

DD13 started her orthodontia treatment last year. DH and I both carry dental insurance on her with mine being primary and DH's being secondary. We had a payment plan set up which resulted in us still owing $1200 ($100/month) for 2017. Knowing this, I set up a FSA from my employer during open enrollment last year which would receive the $1200. We haven't used an FSA in the past because our annual physicals and well-child exams, along with all of our prophylactic dental expenses are covered.

DD13 was born with 2 congenitally absent teeth meaning that she will need dental implants by the time she is about 18. The orthodontic work began last year, but since we knew it was going to be pricey, I opted to change our plan for 2017. We went from a "silver" to a "gold" plan which essentially doubled our orthodontic coverage and will pay 50% for her implants when she eventually needs them.

So...when we went in for her appointment at the beginning of May, I mentioned that I'd received a bill from them showing that I owed around $800. I wanted to make sure that we were still on their payment plan of $100/month. When the receptionist pulled up our account, she said that our TOTAL outstanding balance was $186.02! It should have been $800 since I'd only paid $400 of the $1200 we still owed. She said that they re-submitted the claim to my insurance when I changed the coverage level and that was the amount remaining after they paid.

I was stunned...but I happily handed her my FSA debit card and paid off our entire balance. Now, I have a bit of a predicament...we still have $673.98 left in our FSA. I am now on a prescription that costs $10/month. Other than that, we have no OOP expenses, barring any unscheduled office visit ($20) or ER visit ($100). So what can I get with my $600 that's left in my FSA??? Obviously, I won't be using it until December, just in case we have an emergency of some sort, but I would like to plan ahead.

Glasses, prescription sunglasses, contacts, first aid kits, blood pressure monitors, heating pads. You can google FSA eligible items. Also check with your benefits administrator, my FSA allows me to carry over $500 max. into the following year.

I got braces several years ago when I started working. I put $5k in my FSA that year, but ended up only needing $4500. I used the remaining $500 to buy prescription sunglasses, a better digital thermometer, a heating blanket, eyeglass cleaning wipes, and several other smaller items. The sunglasses were the bulk of the cost though.

Prescription Sunglasses is a huge hit most times, but echo the comments above about checking with your benefits admin to see if any can be carried over...

If you are planning a vacation, you can buy sunscreen with FSA dollars. I used drugstore.com in the past because that way I didn't have to submit anything.

None of us wear glasses so prescription sunglasses won't work. Birth control isn't needed (DH was "neutered":laughing:pug:), and I verified that it is a "use it or lose it" account, no rollover allowed.

I work in healthcare and the stethoscope idea is intriguing. No way would I have ever dropped $200+ on a stethoscope, but if December rolls around and I am sitting on money that will be lost if I don't use it, I think a nice Littman would be a great idea.

I looked at the items that they cover and it looks like a lot of the OTC stuff (ibuprofen, decongestants, etc) are included, but you have to submit a "prescription" from your doctor. I don't think we will be able to get our doctor to write a prescription for $500 worth of Motrin:rotfl2:. I see that acne treatments are included so maybe I can get the kids' pediatrician to write a prescription for some OTC products like ProActiv or that Neutrogena light therapy mask. DD11 is getting really bad acne so she could use it.

Wow, I didn't know blood pressure monitors are an approved item. We just bought one and now I can submit it. :thumbsup2
OP, that's great news but don't give up needing more of that FSA $ yet. There is still a lot of 2017 left.

One year both of our boys ended up with ER visits with copays of $150 each and then subsequent specialist visits. You never know with kids. All it takes is a broken arm and it's ortho, xray, maybe needing pins or screws, etc. Even on the easy side could be lost retainers. Ds17 got his braces off at 15 and lost 3 retainers in 4 weeks! At $180 each! Ugh!
If any of you grind your teeth and want a custom-made night guard those run about $300.
Maybe visit a dermatologist and get rx acne meds?

Give it time; you might use more than you think.

Oh, for sure!

DD11 and DD13 both play basketball and run track, plus DD11 already had one knee surgery (at age 8) which was not due to an injury. It was a fluke that we found it because it is an issue that is typically due to overuse and found in older teens and young adults (osteochondritis dessicans)...not 8-year-olds. She was also born with septo-optic dysplasia (another rarity...she has an underdeveloped pituitary gland and she is missing part of her corpus collossum...but she has no symptoms) which was also found by accident. Her head was HUGE so they did a CT and subsequent MRI when she was 6 months old to rule out hydrocephaly and lo and behold she has something completely different.

So basically, I am going to hang on to every penny of that money until the last week of December. I don't want to have to think twice about making an ED visit or a trip to the doctor's office because I'm worried about the cost.

Whew, you certainly have enough on your plate. Hopefully you never need that money.

I have a FSA I use mine for....

-chiropractor
-first aid kits
-band-aids
-ice/heat packs
-accupunture

I have a my Dr. write it on a RX pads and tell them its not an RX prescription its just over the counter meds for FSA medical reinbursment money I have my job take out of my check. Some Dr. are confused but once I complain they understand. Some Dr. know what I'm talking about it and have no issues. Another way is my Dr. writes a letter saying I need example.....must say what item or service and what the medical reason is for
examples
-Allegra for allergies

-massage for back back pain(my right side get really tight and causes lower back pain and shoulder pain)
-advil cold and sinus medicine for sinuses
-saline nasal spray for sinuses
-Culturcelle proabotic for diabetis (one of my diabetis pill causes issues in a certain area so proabotic helps so I told have that issue)
-icy hot for back pain or shoulder pain

and of course any medical services or medications

-RX medications
-Dr. co-payments
-ortho
-mileage
-glasses
-contacts
-inhalers
-breathing treatment machines

We've had patients use theirs for teeth whitening, I guess some are more lax than others. We can use ours for Gym memberships.

If you're on your feet all day, compression stockings (knee hi) feel wonderful. My legs are terribly achy without them but I do have a lot of spider veins and 1 bad varicose vein. Well worth it.

I've been wanting to look into this. Now that my DD will start college until in the fall, I'll have time to go after work. Did you not need to get a latter from the doctor with medical reason? Do you have to submit your monthly gym bill? I think the gym I plan on going to offers a discount if you do automatic deposit from bank

We just need the receipt for ours. Call your HR dept and ask to be sure. Didn't need anything from the Dr. at all.

Other than rolling over $500 as pp have mentioned - go to fsastore.com and shop on the "prescription not needed" side. I bought a LOT of fancy sunscreens, a "happi neck" pillow, scented eye masks, stocked up on band aids, bought a deluxe first aid kit for camping, fancy thermometers, back support garments and more. I had $340 in my FSA and was leaving my job, so I just went to town. It was great!

ETA: just read that you can't rollover, whoops.
and, you will have to be careful if your plan rules have anything against "stockpiling" (usually buying 3 or more of a particular item). just depends on your plan administrator and how lenient they are.

We have an HSA now, but a few years ago we were in your same situation. I was able to buy non-prescription designer sunglasses from the optometrist. It probably wasn't 100% kosher but I had the itemized receipt from them so I felt comfortable with it.

I make a point to use ours for any co-pays or co-insurance costs throughout the year and winnow it down, though I can count on glasses and contacts using a large chunk every year thanks to being blind as a bat. The rest is often spent on a renegade ER visit.

You can use them for therapeutic massage and chiropractic care. Most people have epically bad ergonomics at their work desks, or poor posture, so chiropractic/massage can be wonderful to restore energy you didn't even know you didn't have and deal with headaches. My LMP is amazing. Also, according to the FSAStore site, a letter of medical necessity will allow for upgrade of your desk chairs with it - a solid choice if I ever heard of one. You should be able to get a letter from the aforementioned chiro, or even your primary care if you explain the problem.

Sunglasses do not have to be prescription to be medically necessary. All should wear them to prevent cataracts/worsening of cataracts or so I'm told. I wish I had so much money left in my FSA for the year. Ours is limited in what you can use the money on but we have enough in doctor visits, prescriptions, etc., to go over the max contribution.
